Title: Super Rat Hideout! (Or, what happens when I have too much time and fleece!)
Post by: red.lotus on May 09, 2008, 09:29:19 PM
I've been feeling like the bottom half of my girls' R-695 is a little bare, so tonight when I was feeling bored I decided to make a rat cube from polar fleece.  Well, of course I ended up going totally overboard.  :yelcutelaugh:  My sewing maching is on the fritz, so I did a basic no-sew cube but made it three times larger than normal, so that it covers the whole shelf in the bottom level of the cage.  I attatched the corners with paper clips to make it stand, which also makes a sort of hammock on the top (two of the girls already tried it out in that fashion!).  They've been running around in it since I put it up!

It's not very pretty, but it was quick, cheap, and is likely to be chewed, so who cares.

Check it out!

Ratman55, if you can operate a pair of scissors, count, and tie a double knot, you could make this!  Being a teenage boy is no excuse!  :yelcutelaugh:  But hey, if you have a grandma, I suppose you're all set!  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

I love it!  I can sew, but I actually really like the ties that you made.  Very creative and very attractive, too.

Its good to see you have learned how practical and wonderful women are ;D Now get to tying double knots and learning some useful stuff for the future (come on, making rattie accessories will be a useful life skill!!!) :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

Yeah, just imagine if you meet a girl who has rats, and you can actually give her a hammock for them that you made with your own hands.  Now THAT would make me swoon.   :cheeky:

red.lotus, I love your hideout!  I have a few hammocks I made like that, but so far haven't done a cube.  That might be something for today!  :thumbsup2:

Cool idea, my rats would love something like that! As it is they love having empty cardboard boxes to hide in, but they get so stinky I have to replace them every week. I would love to replace them with something washable like that.

This was so cute I had to have a go with making one, hope you don't mind. I made a one "room" tree house cube hammock. I will post pictures and/or link to video I took of them actually using it (didn't think they'd use it) but only with your permission. (your thread ;))

Oh, absolutely, Fala!  I'd love to see what you did!  I'm so glad I was able to "inspire" you to make a cube!  As soon as I have time I'll post the basic instructions in case others want to try (I'm at work right now, "catching up on paperwork."  ;D )

Hey, I made one of those too (the blue/green/pink frog thing):

I thought it would be so cool to make a cube that covered the entire width of the cage (two feet), but it was soooooo time consuming to make! It took me days to sew it together; I only sew by hand. I lined the entire thing in foam and had support foam "beams" inside....and then my girls chewed half of the thing up! I think you have a much better plan. I could have made a dozen of those in the time I took making my one. And the girls would never have known the difference. They're so ungrateful.  ;)

So here's the basic idea behind the construction (although I think most of you could have figured this out! :) )

You make 4 of diagram A, and two of diagram B.  The measurements are the ones I used for my cube, but you can make it any measurements you want.  Just be sure to add about 6" to the width and 6" to the hight (for the tie-tabs).  For instance, if you wanted your final cube to measure ten inches wide by five inches high, you'd cut squares that were sixteen inches wide, and eleven inches high.

Cut a three-inch square out of each corner for every peice.  Then cut an even number of tabs, three inches long, out of the sides (as shown on the diagram).  Be sure that you do the same number of tabs for each long side and each short side.  Then you just start tying!  Tie one long side to another until you have a boxy tunnel.  Then tie the "B" peices onto the ends.  Finish by cutting any entrances or windows you want.  I wove some fleece strips into the top seams, then tied the cube to the cage bars.  I also used some bent paper clips to anchor corners.

Wow, I managed to make a really simple project sound like one of those assembly pamphlets you get with cheap pre-fab furniture.  You know, the ones written by someone in Indonesia for a product made in Sweden being sold in the US?  :yelcutelaugh:  Sorry if that sounds very confusing...  Good luck!  Be sure to post any successes (or failures - that's as entertaining!)

if i had rats atm i would make one but since i probably won't get them for a month or so after i get the yes from my mom i will make one out of some puple (i am presuming the fabric is fleece) and see if it works

Hmm,I should make a cube for my little furry critters..I've made about a dozen hammocks, that they tore down,so maybe a cube would be nice for their cage..   :confused2:

Finally getting to post pics! I'm going to make another thread so I don't take this one over because I have a lot of cute pictures. Here's one that shows it in the cage.
