I am seriously considering getting this cage. My mother has offered to buy it for me (well actually for Worm) because she's so in love with the new girls, and they are so active and curious that we feel they need more stimultion. I was wondering if anyone else has used this cage or uses it now. What do you think of it? I know I could get a Martins, and I am consiering it, but it looks like so much fun in those tubes.

Has anyone else had experience with this cage for rats? The rat cage calculator says it can hold up to 10 rats, so I know it's big enough for my four. Is that too big? Can a cage be too big? We were thinking of getting them a Wobust Wodent Wheel to go inside. None of my rats have ever liked wheels, but Worm has so much energy we figured she might like it. Is it bad to get the largest size wheel for her since she is still very small. Will she have trouble with it? Would the next size smaler be too small for my boys? I don't want them to get stuck or anything.

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm realizing that there are a lot of things I don't know, and I'd rather ask now and make an educated choice than wait until later and be sorry I bought something.

I'm going to look at it today and get a feel for how big the bar spacing is. It looks to me like it's an inch, but not a grid, just horizontal bars. I bet Worm could wiggle out of that for now, but not for long. I think Ruby would allready be too big to squeeze out.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, espeically if you have experience with those tubes and how easy they are to clean. It looks like they come appart in sections. Are they dishwasher safe? Do they hang onto pee smell?

Thank you to all who have any advice for me. My ratties and I appreciate it.

It's a fun LOOKING cage, but a 'bear' to clean.  The tubes end up being awful, very difficult to clean properly.  The wire spacing is pretty big, so it's not for small girls or young rats.  Honestly, there's a lot of wasted space in the cage too, as it could do better with more full floors and levels.  To me, it's a 'trophy' that would sit, and not be really used after the newness wore off.   I still stand by loving my Martins 695!!

I would put more than 6 rats in that cages 10 is way to much for a cage like that.
It's easy to clean except for the tubes.

If you are going to use the wodent wheel for boys the I would definitely get the largest one.  We have the middle sized one and good ol' Thunderbutt can just barely fit in the wheel now... she is the size of a med to large sized boy as she is over 600 grams.  I would take the Martin's cage offer the on you have pictured as it is way easier to clean.  We have a 695 and have 4 girls in there and there is lots of room for hammies hiding boxes the wheel etc.  and the great part is you can convert is to a Rudd if you end up with lots more ratties.

I have to also go with the Martin's cage...  DP is absolutely correct.

I have a Martin cage, and wouldn't trade it for anything!  Smiley

Thank you all for your advice and input. I was a little worried that those tubes would be hard to clean and the wire would be spaced too big. I was also concerned that the novelty might wear off for the ratties, but those tubes just look like so much fun! If I were a rat I'd love it. Now I just have to sell my mom on a cage that doesn't "look" like as much fun. Maybe I can get her interested in accesorizing it . . .

Again thanks, and any more advice or comments (especially from people who have used the cage) would be greatly appreciated.

it really is more fun accessorizing a cage.  Plus I love being able to change things around when I clean.  And its so fun watching the rattie girls discover all the new stuff in the cage.  Keeps them stimulated too Smiley

if your mom is really into the tunnels and stuff there are alot of options out there.  PVC pipe, Dryer hose etc.  have her take a look at the pictures posted in the cage decorating thread (at top of this section) to get some ideas of how much fun accessoring can be.

With all of the levels and such on Martin cages (and you can request extras for a rather small price!), it definately makes them worthwhile.  The spacing is perfect, they're rather easy to clean (HUGE PLUS), and well...  they look nice, in my opinion.  Very well built!

Also, the doors on them are large, and you can easily fit things in them, like wodent wheels - and it makes it easier to grab a reluctant ratty if for some reason they aren't already clinging to the cage trying to get your attention.  Wink

And last - Martin cages has very nice prices, and you get more than your money's worth, I believe.  Smiley

Have you shown your mom all the decorated cages in the top threads?  Lots of great ideas in there!  And as others have said, it's more fun to change the decorations around, in my opinion.  Smiley

I will show her that thread, it might get her excited about accessorizing. Besides, with all the options we would want on the 695 (powder coated, flip top) the Martin's would still be over $50 less than the other cage. She might see that $50 as accessory money.  Cheeky I'm such an evil daughter. It is a little smaller than the other cage, but I'm not sure if that size differencce is just due to the tubes or what. Also, I'm limited to four rats right now (by my fiance) so getting a cage that's too big will just make me want more anyway.

Has anyone ever tried using some of those Ferretrail tubes to make a play area that goes both inside and outsie the cage? I mean, does anyone have experience modifying a Martin's cage to have play tubes running from the inside arroud the outside and back in?

Also, I confused that the cage calculator would say that cage can hold 10 rats.  I have the Superpet cage that is twice the height of that one and my cage is designed to hold 10.44 rats according to the cage calculator.

I was using the dimensions I got online. (47"x20"x38") That may have included the tubes though, that may have been throwing it off.

Definately go with the Wobust Wodent Wheel. I started out with a Senior size and found it to be too small for the girls once they got the wheel going. I've never had a problem with little ones using the Wobust size. I think Worm will love it.

evertime i see those funnel cages i'm reminded of my old hamster's habitrail. i HATED that cage. the tubes had to be pried open lengthwise to clean them. the ridges on the inside designed for the hammie/ferret/rattie to grip while climbing are hard to clean, and the whole tube becomes a collection office for droppings. also, my hammie DIED while in the very middle of one tube (she died from a stroke or HA). i had to remove it from the cage then pull it apart. i'd be too scare if a rattie got sick or hurt and crawled into the middle of those tubes. my suggestion would be to get the ferret "playground" at the petstore. they come with clear, multixolored tubes, including stretchy ones, balls, and can be set up like a maze. or you could just go to home depot or loews and get the plumbing tubes that run about 33-99 cents apiece. they aren't clear though (or are they? anyone know where the clear ones are?). other concerns with the cage: that first ramp looks steep, too steep for an old rat; superpet ledges get dirty FAST (i have the deluxe critter home), and the ridges around the ledge requires daily, if not twice daily, cleanings; i have heard of the funnels breaking/faling off the main cage, even if properly installed. persistent chewers could chew away the flimsy clips that hold the tubes together and to the cage. i don't have a martin yet, but they seem to be of a higher quality. plus, cages designed for rats are so much better in the long run (long run as in if you decide to get babies in the future)

Well my mom and I just ordered a brand new Martins R695 with powder coating and flip top lid! She also popped for a Wobust Wodent Wheel and a litter pan! Thawnks mom! I love you! The girls are going to love it I know!

Also, thanks Twisted, I'm sorry to hear what you had to go through with your hammy, but your story really helped my mother see the light of the Martins.

Thanks to all who helped! Now I just have to wait for it to get here!

Once again, I HIGHLY recommend that you put the cage together using zip ties, instead of the c-clamps that come with the cage.  It's easier to take the cage apart if you need to later, or if you put it together 'wrong'.  Smiley

Thanks Pie! I was planning to do it with Zip Ties. In fact I'm making a trip over to Home Depot tomorrow after work to get some. Anyone know where they sell them in all those pretty colors I see on people's cages?

They probably have the multi colored ties at Home Depot or Lowe's ... most of the places 'should' carry them!

I have a cage very similar to that one (I think it's the next model down from that) and my rats were able to squeeze through the bars very easily.  I ended up wrapping it in chicken wire.  If I had to give you advice, I would say to not get that one.  The tubes are indeed a "bear" to clean and something I do not look forward to every cleaning.

I have to disagree with just using zip ties. Place a few c-rings around. Those young girls are bound to chew on them and you'll find yourself putting the cage back together a lot. I have a lot of Martins and I always use the c-rings, that's just me though, I know a lot of people just use zip ties, and if you didn't get the professional c-ring closer, your doomed any ways!!!

I have and use one of the cages you were considering. I don't find it hard to clean and the tubes aren't even that bad, they just snap apart, the thing I don't like is the that shelves have grooves in them and the pee pools up in there...yuck!!!
