I have been wanting a two story ferret nation for a while becouse i wanted to put dante my hedgehog on the bottem and have the rats on top or vise versa depending on which will work best. The thing is that can you close of the top cage and not have to worrie about my rat boys getting into the other cage. I really dont have to worrie about dante attacking the boys tails or anything becouse i dont think hes going to be able to reach them since he will only have one leave no shelf to climb on (he falls alot). Plus since dante dosnt really have a tail like a rats i dont think i have to worrie about them bitting his tail if he sticks it out of the cage. Im just worried about that big hole that connects the two cages?

By the way i though about a CN but from what price rang might be i dont think i will have the money to go out and by it.

Oh if you dont think that will work out. I was thinking about getting a martin cage instead if it dosnt work out. Cheap for the size of the cage thing i guess and i have heard alot of good reviews about the cages. What type of cage do you think would be best. I just liked the fact that i could have both of the cages on top of each other to save room and the big doors where a plus when it comes to cleaning. As for right now i have a tommy 120 i belive for my hedgehog and its a pain and i cant stack anything on top of it or it on top of things becouse of how long it is. Not to mention cleaning is a pain. Have to take the whole top off. When i do that i dont have any room to move in my room. Please help.

I don't have an FN, but the ladder does lock [there's a little dohickey to keep it locked and everything] up to block off the cage. As for the opening in the pan, which is what I think you're asking about? Most people who separate the cages put something on the bars in that space. A piece of stick down lino, some corplast, etc.. If you're that worried about it, you can order another base pan for the top section. Ferret.com I believe has replacement pans for $25-$27.

Just always make sure that everything is intact, that no one's chewed holes anywhere, and that the ladder is and stays firmly locked.

So long as you cover the space where the ramp closes off the level, it's safe. Your best option, in my opinion, would be to get a replacement pan for the top shelf (or ask the company if they could supply you with two full pans instead of the one with a cut out).

A warning about blocking off that space- I had to separate an aggressive male rat from the others before he was neutered. He was on the bottom, the other rats were on the top. The section of ramp that blocks the upper level is only a few inches by a few inches, a very small spot, however I was woken up by squeaking in the middle of the night. I found my PEW boy sitting on that tiny area, while the aggressive male sat underneath him. Now, perhaps it was Rodney's stupidity, but he sat there for several minutes, allowing the aggressive boy to chomp on his toes and tail. It was horrible. He lost the tips of many of his toes, and others were mutilated. The tip of his tail is also missing. He healed up fine, and the aggressive boy was neutered and lives happily with the others again, but because of this experience I cannot stress enough the NEED to block that ramp. Even though it offers such a tiny space and a very awkward position for a fight to take place, it's still a danger to leave it uncovered. Whatever you use to cover it has to be sturdy.

The cage itself is great, and the locking ramp is VERY secure, just make sure to properly cover the wire mesh opening between the levels.

The ramps do swing up and lock and if you got a 142 with a 143 add on, you would have three stories and give your pets more room.  By the way, the two story critter nation also has the same ramps as the ferret nation.  The price is more because it uses more steel due to the 1/2 inch wire spacing.  For Happy Dogs, is selling the cages for under $200: http://www.forhappydogs.com/c-42-small-animal.aspx
