Title: Cage Photo Gallery - Post Yours! (no conversations please)
Post by: kmw on January 28, 2005, 08:59:07 AM
Here's a thread where you can post pictures of your rat cages, show off your cages, and get ideas from others.

I'd ideally like to keep this thread to photos and a short description of what cage, how many rats, and what you have in the cage.  If you like what you see in somebody else's cage - Private Message them, rather than hijack the thread!

So, who wants to be first?

Ooooh ooooh me!

Mine is a RUUD from martinscages.com, and home to my 15 girlies. :D You can PM me if you are wondering about any of my accessories. I have lots of bird toys, a senior Wodent Wheel, a tire swing, igloos, Ferretrail tubes, PVC pipes, a weeble wobble, a litterbox...yeah...

Here is a more recent picture (1/31/05) - Sorry it's a bit dark.

Here's a pic of my Martin's 695 when the Barenaked Boyz held court...

Top balcony - hammock/tent
Top right - white corner shelf from Petsmart, manzanita bird branch below it
Middle floor - PVC "Y" tube connector, vinyl carpet runner floor covering, Flat Bac water bottle
Just below - Ferret litter box (cable tied w/ dowel support), another manzanita branch
Bottom - stainless steel bird dish (screwed to cage), another Flat Bac bottle, purple resin "log", Kleenex Family Size tissue box)

I'll have to take a pic of the 680 when my new boys move in this weekend. ;D

Here's mine, but it's from about a year ago.  I've since moved my computer desk (seen to the far left in this pic) to another wall of the room and spread the cages out a bit more on the same wall.
I use heavy duty cardboard shipping tubes, jean leg hammocks, plastic corner Hi-Bac litter trays, and plastic shoeboxes for furnishings.

This is my homemade cage. It's 4' wide, 3' tall, and 2' deep.  It's big enough to house 12-14 rats, but currently only holds my crew of eight (for now ;)).

This is .. or WAS my RUUD--it is now two separated cages--bad boys hehe.  four boys live in the bottom and three on top now.  They seem to like sleeping (and peeing) on the fleece, the pvc tubes are perfect for eating a treat in peace.  They do "jog" in the wheel, although not as much now as when they were little LOL..

here is my cage/tank combo.  It consists of an 80 gallon tank for the base with one martins 695 and one 690 on the top (I plan getting another 695 one of these days).  The rats can move between the cages by going into the tank part via bird ladders.  Currently 17 girls live in it.

Ayrn is posing with her toy (no its not a rat) for a size comparison.  She is a 65 pound golder retriever.

This is my Ruud, which I actually currently have split (the Ruud is actually the R680 and R695 together I believe).  The bigger section houses my 6 boys and the smaller section houses 2 girlies.  I decided to leave this picture up anyway because it shows the Ruud nicely.

Here are all the accessories in the cage:
Two large igloos (one on top and one on bottom level)
Two hammocks (one on top, one in the middle level)
One bird rope (top level)
One bird fleece hide house (top level)
Two bamboo baskets (top and middle level)
One large pvc pipe (top level)
One wooden rat hideaway (middle level)
One plastic clothes pin basket (bottom level)
One ferret teeball with "T" tunnel (bottom level)
One large box with hole to accomodate the boys (middle level)
Two wooden hanging bird toys (top and bottom level)
One brick - for trimming their nails (top level)
One egg carton that will need replacing soon hehe (middle level)
And their new linoleum floors on the top and middle levels, to make for easier cleaning :)

Here is the R-695 seperated

Holly cow! er- Holly rat! Those things are huge! And to think, I thought my cage was big. But then again, I only have one rat, and pretty much everyone else on this site has at least five...

Well, as we all know, rats get sweeter as the numbers get bigger!  :rattysmiley:

All the same, my cage is small compared to everyone elses--- or it just looks small. But my girls are small too, so that's okay.

Here's my cage, complete with new playarea! Now I've just gotta make something that can get the girls to and from without cutting wires... I'll probably just end up buying a bird-ladder at the petstore.  ;D

ok, here is mine. It's completely changed now though. As the boys didn't like it before ;) lol.

Now the wheel is moved a bit, there is a fleece baby blanket on the floor, the grey litter box is on the floor. they have fleece material to lay on/snuggle in on the first balcony, along with a shredded paper dig box. On the middle floor there is another litter box under the balcony, a hidey/sleep box opposite the basket *on the floor*, there is only one basket now, the food and water bottles have been moved up to the upper balcony to make a "food area" which is where they will get all their extra treats, snacks, and meals :D

As promised, here's Stalag 13, home of Hogan, Schultz, Klink and Newkirk.

The little green blob near the door is a bit of chenille stem (pipe cleaner), because the door bows out just teeny bit, and they're so small that a little tenacity and a good push could lead to an escape. Once they grow a bit more, I can lose the pipe cleaner. LOL!

This summer when the Ruud is back together I'll post pictures of how I normally set that up...

This is my cage! It's a Marchioro- not sure which model, but it's their largest size (two doors). This is my big boy Sam's cage- he gets it all to himself! Inside are a litter box, hammock, ferret tube, tissue box, Wobust Wodent Wheel, a sock, a cat ball, a TP tube, an igloo, food dish, and water bottle. One big towel covers the bottom.

(BTW, Sam doesn't use the hammock, ferret tube, or Wodent Wheel. :yelcutelaugh:)

Here is the Martins R-680, home to Anastasia and Imogene. Lily and June are in the 30-gallon tank. There are a bunch of spare cages and random stuff under the table.

On the other side of the room, here's Beatrice in her R-690. The mice, Claudia-Jean and Donatella, are upstairs in the blue and white cage.

Well, first off I have to say WOW! There are some very impressive setups posted here.. nice job!

Here is our Martin's 670, home to Peanut and Twilight

They currently have a Dearpie hammock, tissue box, paper towel tube, newspaper shreds (packing from the box the cage came in, they LOVE them!), ferret ball, cat toy, Leapin' Ledge, PVC tube, small igloo, plastic basket (I tried attaching it to the side of the cage, but the girls chewed the cable ties the first day), homemade fleece rattie rope, 2 wooden bird toys, 2 food crocks (one for lab blocks, one for Suebee mix), Lixit Wide Mouth water bottle and on one shelf I am trying out the plastic needle point canvas. So far so good, the girls started to chew it, but have mostly left it alone. That is their favorite shelf to store lab blocks covered up with newspaper shreds.

Mine is an 'All Living Things' Cage from Petsmart. I like it, it's pretty easy to clean. and I like the wire spacing.

I have 2 Dearpie hammocks and a DP tube as well (Thanks Pie!!!) ;D

The rats love them and I love the quality & cost. These things go through the washer all the time!

Here's the two cages I have right now.  One is a Martin's R-685, the other is a homemade cabinet cage that I just finished (although the doors still need to be done - the ones on there are only temp.)

This is an old picture, but it gives you an idea as to how it's normally set up.  This cage houses Toddles and Lina.

This is the new cabinet cage.  It is 5' wide, 2' deep, and 3' tall, and can hold 15+ rats, though I don't think I'll ever have that many!  I haven't screwed in eyes yet to hang hammocks from, so it looks pretty sparse at the moment.  This cage has Milos, Pompeii, Tuscany, Benji, and Turin.

And for a size comparison, here's the cabinet cage with the 685 on top.  (Ignore the messy room)

And past cages...

The previous cabinet cage - 3' wide, 18" deep, 5' tall (including the storage at the bottom)

Martin's R-695  (Only pic I can find, it usually had a couple more things in there - cardboard boxes, t.p. tubes, PVC pipe, etc)

And the homemade "Ruud"

I have four females living in it right now

This is Solace and Lennox's cage. My boyfriend got this cage for Bella as a Christmas gift. She really enjoyed it while she was alive.
Now my boys jump around and play on the bottom lv.
In the cage I have cat toys, bird toys, 2 hammocks, 3 food bowls, the water bottle (this is an old pic. they have a new water bottle now) They have that tube they used to hide in. Now Solace just runs in there after I give him some "people" food.  ;D

I haven't taken pictures of the other two cages because Phoenix's is currently under construction (I'm putting some new toys in and a hammock) and my foster girl isn't staying so there's no point in making it all fancy when my boss wants her back.  :(
So, when I get Phoenix's cage all done then I'll post pix.

bottom part is a 680

and all of it together--a bit smaller than a RUUD and bigger than a 695-- I have five males who seem to have plenty of room in it
My other cage is a modified 695, I had a bigger door put on and another door added to the bottom left side of the cage to get the wobust wodent wheel in/out without having to take it apart.

If you look close, you can see the bottom level, or "basement"; this is the litter box. The very top floor is the bedroom, with two hammocks, a ferret tunnel, an igloo and a blanket, as well as a toy or two. All of the other floors have chew toys, wooden toys, rope, a PVC hideway, etc. The cage is big enough to house about a dozen rats, but I'm limiting myself to five - three girls and two neutered boys. This gives everyone lots of room to play!

My Monkey Motel

Its a "one of a kind" modified cat condo. Cost me an arm and a leg but after over a year of use and daily cleaning I still adore it.

Its got the usual stuff in it. Branches, ropes, hammocks, carpets, 3 litter pans, a pigloo, a woodent wheel, a superpet wheel (more popular than the woodent for some reason), lots of shredded paper, a few cheap facecloths to nest with, a Fisher Price barn, a terracota pot, a few rocks, a ferret tube, an empty cereal box, some jingly toys, a wooden parrot toy, 2 baskets with food and 3 water bottles.

I'd love to upgrade, but for now I'm stuck with this...

Its changed a bit, but not much. I have a little tent, changed the hammock, and put the igloo in a different place. Any ideas on what else I can possibly fit?

Its next to my bed, for comparison.

Here's the boys' cage:

I like to change it up pretty often.  Currently, there's a soda box on the top, a hammock and the water bottle, a tent and the food and treat dishes on the second floor, a long soda box with extra holes on the middle and the igloo and two PVC pipes on the bottom.

Here's the girls' cage:

Currently, there's a hammock, food dish and treat dish on the top level, a soda box on the middle half-level, the water bottle on the next half-level and a PVC pipe and an igloo on the bottom.

I need to take new pictures of the 670 and 680.  I'm still not 100% satisfied with the layouts I have in them.  Still working out the best use of space.  I'll try to do that soon.  :)

This is my cage as of right now.  I plan to make some changes to the inside by adding cubbies, bins, and hammocks to all levels.  I also have plans for a homemade cage that I'm working on for after I'm done introducing my 2 new girls.

In the cage right now are two different pocket hammocks, a ferret litter pan, 2 toy ropes, and 2 igloos.  I also have added since the picture a cardboard box to the bottom level and a small bin to the top level.

here is my tank right now. I have two babies at the moment, in a twenty gallon aquarium.

Right now there is a hanging tube, a rollanest, a bird klatter ladder and a regular bird ladder, plus their water bottle, critter kabob and food dish.

This is my kids' cage.  It's 1.8m tall, 80cm wide and 41cm deep, currently housing three man rats.

I think the furniture's pretty visible, so I won't list it.  ;)

linky (http://www.reesrats.orcon.net.nz/mycagebig.htm) to an outdated page about the old cage.  It was 1.7m tall, 80cm wide and 55cm deep.  It housed up to 8 man rats, but wasn't sealed properly and was getting a bit stanky after 3.5 years on the job.

The pictures are old, so they don't include all the furniture usually in the cages these days, so don't look the pictures too closely ;) In addition to these, I have some 10 a bit smaller cages and Duna-tanks for litters, quarantine and such, but I think they are not necessary to show in this thread.

Measurements: 27x19x47in. Self made
This cage is inhabited by our "grandmas", our three old ladies. They have three big layers plus several smaller in varying places, baskets, 3 hammocks, a litter pan, a cardboard box house and a plastic house, ladders and rope ladders for safe climbing, cardboard tubes, paper shreds for nesting and a bowl of dirt for digging. Other toys are varying depending on what I invent.

This is a FOP Lusaka aviary, measuring 33,5x24x58in.
This is the cage of the breeding boys, at the moment there are 5. The cage has three original layers with their own ladders, and I've added several smaller ones into varying places. There are also several baskets, wire and wooden, 4 hammocks, ropes, 2 litter pans, branches and a small tree stomp. Boys also have cardboard tubes and two houses, plus a self made hammock tent-like thing. Paper shreds and digging bowl belong to the furniture too, usually the digging bowl grows something too, these days I prefer oat sprouts.

Another self made cage, measuring 24x31,5x66in.
Here live our breeding girls, 9 of them at the moment. There are 4 stable layers and several changeable ones, and the furniture is very similar to the boy cage. The picture was taken in the middle of the furnishing on the building day, so it looks quite empty.

This I suppose is an old Ferplast model, dunno which. Measurements are 20x33,5x39in.
2 old gentlemen live in this one, and as the cage is actually like two rabbit cages on top of eachother with a hole to go through from one to another, it is quite easy for them to move in. The cage has 3 hammocks, a house, a litter pan, lots of fabrics on the upper level floor, digging bowl, tubes and a ladder.

Well, it's not really decorated, but here's my homemade cage. It's 33" L x 17" W x 36" H.

Inside it has: baby toys, placemats as floor coverings, wooden dowels to support the floors, an igloo, food bowl, 2 water bottles, and an oatmeal container. And please forgive the mess, it's due for a cleaning.

A bad picture of my cage.

This is a Martin's 680. In the bottom I've got eco bedding, a litterbox with carefresh. a Rody igloo, a PVC pipe,  food dish and water bottle (with a brick undreneath), a cat ball with a plastic bell, a comfy perch, 2 link bird toys put together, 2 bird branches, 2 small plastic bins made into shelves,a hamster ball with the end off and filled with fabric attached to the ramp for a hanging hidy place, and a bird toy with a bell.  THe top has a hammock, a plastic bin shelf, and assorted bits of fabric for nesting.

I change things around pretty often, and the the rats rearrange it all  ::)

This is my All Living Things Cage. The cage is 30x30x14. The wire spacing is to big for my girls (1x2- hence the wire mesh) & I'm not happy with the slide out pan for various reasons. On the other hand the big doors give easy access to the whole cage.
The 1st 2 pix are of the top level. There is a bird rope, bird ladder that came off a bird play ground thing, food, water, a hammock, an extra shelf, a hanging bell toy, and a pvc pipe.
The next 2 pix are of the bottom of the cage. There is a waffle house, wodent wheel, 2 added shelves, various cat toys, some cardboard boxes, a chin chiller, and a tin of shredded paper (which once the girls are back in the cage will be spread all over the cage).

Here's a picture of my Martin's R-695.  It will eventually house two boys.

On the very top shelf is one of those super pet tents.  I sewed up a cushion for the inside, but you can't see it from this shot.

On the middle floor is a blanket that I made for them, a tent that I made, a Hammock/hide-out that I made, and a cushion that I made.  There is alse a hanging bird toy and a Super Pet Tube.  I also have a few jingly cat toy balls

Just above the lower shelf is one of Toni's (PPRR) hammocks (I also have a blue one) Then I have a hanging food dish.

On the floor is a Super Pet Chair, a litter box, a hanging hide out that I made, a litter box, a Super Pet Ferret Roller Basket, a few cat toys, and Eco Bedding.

I have many more toys waiting to be rotated into the cage, so I may post a picture of a different set up as well later on.

Here's my Martin's R-670.

On the top shelf is the cuddle cup and soup mug.  Then there's the hammock (which I rotate with the Dearpie one).  On the middle shelf I have their food dish and in the corner I have a mini litter tray that I use as a dish for my Suebee's.  Does that make me a bad mom...?  You can also see the two water bottles.

On the bottom is their HUGE litter tray that covers almost half the floor (not really)  That way they have a 50-50 chance of pooping in the litter tray  ;D
And you can see a cat ball and a chewed up kleenex box.  Greenies and chew sticks litter the cage floor as well.

Mmkay, well, here's a really bad pic of my cage.

So, top floor has the hanging bird toy that never gets used ( ::)), a basket with a small towel in it, and a cereal box with a square cut out in the top so he can poke his head out, lol. Oh, and the food bowl is also up there.

Bottom level has the chewed up hammock, a ferret tube, a few of those balls with bells in them, and an upside down igloo with newspaper in it. Nemo never really slept in the igloo, but I saw that he loved shredding up newspaper, so I decided to make it more useful and turn it into his "shredding box".  :) And he LOVES it.

Well, after looking at all your cage pics it really helped me get some ideas to spruce up my cage. So here is the result :)

Here's my martin's R 690 with Zelda and Tinkerbelle in it (you can't see Tinker in the pic though but she's in there somewhere). I added a bird toy, made them a hammock by using a baby blanket and jeans for the bottom with jean hanging loops (I'm proud of my pitiful sewing  :yelcutelaugh: ), threw in some jingly balls (cat toys), and made them some rugs with scraps of fabric. I also added a pvc pipe tunnel and threw in a box.

And here's my new cage, which right now doesn't have any rats in it. Once Tinkerbelle gets bigger, she and Zelda will share this one, and I will be getting 2 or three boys eventually that will be in the 690. It has similar decorations but has two hammocks since it doesn't have any balconies. These hammocks I just made by cutting squares of cloth from old jeans and tshirts and sticking hangers through them, so I will throw them away when they get dirty. I plan on eventually making more hammocks like the one I just did for the 690, I like how they are plusher and look prettier. This cage is a my first home cage and is 29 3/4â€? long, 16â€? tall and 17 1/2â€? wide. Very good cage for two rats for the price  :rattysmiley:

Before my girls got thier "grotto" style cage, here's where they lived:
Its a Martin's The Ferret Condo (F-475) with an added 4th level. The final demensions are 30" x 24" x 60"
The top level has a log cabin hut, a large hammock and litter box in corner with a plastic tube (the kind they use in gutters) hanging. The ramp down to the next level is the gutter tubing which is ribbed for easy climbing and it is easy material to cut holes in and attach. Next level has a ferret sphere, small wodent wheel, blue lookout basket, bowl of food and hopper for blocks. The next level has an igloo, corner litter pan, another basket, large wodent wheel, lower level has wire corner basket, yellow tube, red storage box, wooden hide away and food hopper. All the upper floors have plastic place mats down on the wire floors.

Im not quite finished, and as of right now the cage is not lived in yet. I will be getting my ratties this coming weekend, one week later then i thought *fingers crossed*. I'm waiting for my 3 boys.

When my cage is complete it will have tubes to climb from one floor to the next, as well as ladders that are already in there. And tubes from the outside of the cage in, as an entrance.
I will also be making more toys as i go along and get more ideas. i'll post pictures of my new ratties as soon as they come to their new home, now that i know how to put pictures on here.

Take Care

My birthday present to both myself and the girlies, born November 5th, the day before me: a brand-new Martins R695!

We've changed from a hammock to a hanging plastic basket (much more resilient with my hard-core chewers), and the rats have made their own decorating changes (they like to move the boxes).  Other than that, it's pretty sparse.  After Christmas, I hope to spruce up their cage with some more baskets and maybe some thick climbing rope.

The girly standing up with the big tummy is my Lenore, by the way.

Don't think I've posted to this thread yet.

Here is my girls' aviary - actually two aviaries bolted together, with a big perspex shelf half way down and several corner shelves.

This is my favourite cage, the Rat Shak. It's built of modular panels, so I can change the doors and walls around as well as arranging the insides. I worried that the boys might chew the plastic, but they haven't touched it. I do have one spare panel, just in case. My only criticism is that it could be a little deeper front to back, but as long as they have plenty of mooching space the boys don't mind.

This is where my girls, Betty and Lola live:

It's made by an Italian company, 'Terenziani', and the style is one of their larger ones, called 'Moore'.
I put cardboard down on all the wire floors, and their ground floor is full of 'Safe Pet' paper bedding, which they then carry around and put in their bed boxes. There's a cardboard 'Chube' on the bottom floor as well now.
That's waxed tablecloth material on the wall behind, to cope with pee-splatter etc.
My parents (bless 'em) have another Terenziani cage, two thirds the size, at their place so I can take the girls when I go and stay.

I can't believe I haven't added mine yet! Anyway, here it is:

Its made from an old entertainment center. The top shelf has carpet and their bistro bed:

nair pictured.

The second shelf has some dog toys.

The third shelf has their litter box, and their food bowl

And the last shelf just has a box and a branch for now. I change the interior of the cage often.

The big area might be hard to see, but this is whats in it:
A plant holder

and their wheel.

There is also the girls cage, which is small. But they are only going to be in it til I get my ruud in a couple weeks... then that cage will be my quarantine cage.

Theres is the one on the top of the boys cage..

I have a ferret litter tray hammock, a little metal letter holder I got from a thrift shop.some branches, a hammock, cat toys, and their food bowl.

My boys live here. I have no idea where the cage is made, but i bought it in the "bird department" of the pet store.
I'm fairly happy with it, though the cleaning is pretty hard because nothing kan be pulled apart. But my boys seem to like it. The stuff in the cage varies a little. What you see below is the minimum of what's in it.  ;)

My girls live here. This is my favorite cage: Ferplast Furret Extra Large. (I think that is the name...)
It's easy to clean, beacause of the big openings and everything comes apart.  ;D
Again: There is usually more stuff in the cages.
It's a bit crammed at the moment, so I'm counting on buying a bigger cage. Hope I find one just as easy to take apart and clean.

And this is the cage I have for litters and sick rats. I really love this cage too. A Ferplast Mary I think...

I am definately going to be getting more toys very soon!

Not sure what brand it is (it came with my first two ferrets from the rescue) but it works well! Currently Tootsie is the only one living in it (used to be Tootsie and Precious) but hopefully I will be getting two sweet girls from Nashville soon!

A more recent picture of the Monkey Motel's decoration. Currently separated in two because Moriarty and Watson can't live with each other so each day when I clean the cage I switch them. One day they get the large tier and are with PaiMei and one day they get the smaller portion (which is still big enough for 5 rats according to the cage calculator). It's not ideal but it's the best I can do because of the blasted antibiotic resistant strain of myco they have. I can't get any more rats until my last 3 are gone  :-\

Top shelf-My new hammock cube :), usually a hammock and another hanging thing up there
Second shelf-Litter Pan, food dish, wodent wheel
Fourth shelf- Straw mat, usually has a cuddle cup or hammock
Bottom-Pvc piping, igloo, and another plastic house thingy that I dont know the name of  ::)

Lol, notice the lack of curtains behind the cage  ::) You can just imagine the look on my moms face when I had to tell her that the nice curtains she sewed me were in a hundred pieces as bedding scattered throughout the cage   :yelcutelaugh:

You guys have some amazing cages. I always come here for inspiration when I want to redecorate my rats cage.

Speaking of my cage, here it is. It's the Martin's R-695 and it's currently housing 4 rats: 2 intact females and 2 neutered males.

I currently have plastic floor protector down on the levels to make them easier to clean, but one of my girls is a chronic chewer so it's looking pretty rough right now.

As you can see I have many different plastic keyrings and ropes hanging for them, 3 stacking baskets with towels for them to sleep in, a hanging basket (since hammocks get chewed rather quickly), 6 plastic baseballs strung up on a chain, PVC pipes on the cage floor, as well as one hanging from a level as a little swing (which Wiley LOVES), and a small tote container with a couple of holes for them to hide in also.

If anyone has any ideas on alternative floor coverings that are very easy to wipe clean and hold up against rattie teeth, please let me know. LOL Linoleum looks like a good plan, but how expensive is it and how easily can it be taken in and out of the cages? And also, a couple of you have what appears to be carpet.... can you wash that? If you can pm me some answers it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is a more recent picture, after adding many new cuddly type things. And now I'm using walnut shell litter and eco-bedding for burrowing. And I have added an igloo and cardboard soda box. So far my homemade cage is a dream to clean and set-up, I've changed the set-up 3 times already in two weeks, just to see what I can do.

Everything is pretty obvious, except on the 3rd level there is a cardboard shipping tube that I cut a hole in and attached to the side of the cage, and right next to that is a suet holder that I stuffed with shredded paper for nesting material.

I just realized I never put up  my new custom made cages by Martins.
I contacted Diane Martin to make me a cage with my specs. I wanted rattie bar spacing so I can put all ages in the cage. It's 30 x 18 x 36 high. I asked for 15" door on the bottom and top. I asked for just one full level and one balcony at the top. I also requested for a pull out tray for easy cleaning and no "junk" falls in between the bars and the tray.
It's fantastic and my rats love it. I put two of them together to make it one huge cage for my 13 rats. I have 6 spayed females, 2 neutered boys and 5 intact boys living happily together in their community cage.

I just ordered another one and should soon be here. I've recently taken in 5 rescues.  And one of these custom made cage will be just perfect.  :hyper:

I finally received my other custom made cage. It's identical to my other ones except I'm keeping it as a single cage.
So it's 30 x 18 x 36 high. With it's huge doors and pull out tray, makes it's so simple to clean.
My new guys will be going into this cage.  :hyper:

Here is my first cage all set up and ready to house two rats.  All I have to do is spread the shredded aspen in the aquarium level and watch the show.  The only other change I might add is take out the shack and get an igloo instead as those seem to be popular and work well with rats.  If there are any other suggestions as to some other non-loud toy that I can toss in there so they'll have maximum fun when I sleep, drop me a PM.  :)  Right now going from the floor up they have a tube, climbing toy, wheel, and hammock.

Or any other comments or suggestions are very much welcome.  Thanks a lot!   :wave2:

Martins' R-695. Currently holding one rat. Setup changes every time I change bedding, things are switched in and out constantly.

The pan holds towels (instead of bedding). The bottom level: "nesting box" (changes every week or less), hanging bird toys, a stuffed animal (not attached), a hanging (stacking) desk-shelf sort of thing with a small blanket for softness. The second level: a baby rattle toy (not attached), cat sisal "tube" hanging; very thick shelf liner on part of the floor. Third level: a terracotta pot (loosely attached to side of cage), food bowl (small cat metal bowl, we have 3 so there's always 2 being cleaned and one in the cage), a hanging baby toy, bird ladder leading to top floor (attached at bottom with a ziptie to keep it non-moving); baby blanket, washcloth and a plastic very thin cutting board stuff on parts of floor. Top level: a jean-leg hammock hung with baby rings, basket attached to side with a baby blanket inside; floor covered with a baby blanket.

There's washclothes, small blankets and fleece materials scattered about the cage for warmth. I usually also have a chin-chiller marble slab thingy in there and more of the shelf liner, but those are soaking at the moment.

The girls' cage! It's a Martin's 690. I've used vinyl tiles and towels to line their cage. Right now they've got a summer theme going. Mac isn't so sure about the bright flashy thing, and stands near her favorite tunnel.

Here is my All Living Things cage from PetSmart. Next month we are ordering a RUUD from Martins, but for now...this is the cage. :) We had four girls in it (one just passed away last night so now there are three) Ive got a BAD case of GGMR so thats why the RUUD next month!;) Thanks for looking!

The white tunnel is dryer tunnel. It lasted about four days and then was chewed all up! But they had a blast while it was there:)
Bottom has the litterbox, food dish, wall mirror, small igloo and a Chube (under the stairs), middle floor has an oatmeal box, a tub turned upside down to climb on, and a dearpie tube hammock! Top floor has a huge plastic cylinder that came to me filled with cookie cutters!! they LOVE this thing! Also on the top floor is the water bottle and medium sized Dearpie pocket hammock:) and a jingle ball.

Here are photos of my cage, a Martin's 695.

and a view through the door of the top level:

and redecorated:

I love the cage in terms of space and make, but it isn't powder-coated, so it makes a big, smelly mess .. I definitely recommend powder-coated.

And then here is a photo of the small cage I have borrowed and used for fosters. It's just a nicely-sized cage that's good to have around when I need it. This cage is a Martin's, but I'm not quite sure which one.

Accessories change often, but there is just basic stuff in there: toys, igloos, wheel, and hammocks!

(I have fabric hung in the back to shield the wall from pee. It provides hours of chewing enjoyment.)

Here's my previous cage, which was homemade. I donated it to Rattie Ratz last year. It was built on a 2' x 3' cement mixing pan and uses wire shelving with tiles for each level.

I just recently re decorated mine, hehehe, my two girls Eli and Olive are having a blast exploring all the new things! I found this cage at Petco (suprisingly) it's the Small Animal Kingdom Ferret Starter Kit if anyone was wondering (MUCH too small for a ferret though) it's 22.5" L x 14.5" D x 28.5" H

It's perfect for my two girls though and i love the fact that it has solid levels and ramps. In it I have a hammock, some old shirts to make ropes/tunnels with plastic cups with the bottoms cut open for tunnels, an old flower pot as a little hiding place, an old hampster wheel for them to lay in, a cardboard box with some holes punched in it, a shark head cupholder for them to  sleep in, anyways...LOTS of fun stuff! :)

In their cage they have: 5 hammocks, 3 plastic bins, 2 igloos, a shoe box, a comfort wheel (12"), a brick, a piece of drainage tubing, a shoebox, a litterbox with cloth (before all they did was sleep in it, so I figured I might as well make them comfortable :P), and an extra shelf with a cloth over it which they use as a bed.

Hahahahaha. I'm such a dork. I just went out and bought fleece for the bottom of the girls' cage, in the same fabric as the wonderrodent cube i plan to buy for my birthday! wow. anyways, this is the first time I've used fabric, so I hope it works!

Here is a pic of my bird cage I am using for my new baby boy until he grows big enough to fit into the super pet cage I have waiting for him. I've tried to make it as homey for him as possible, but my decorating skills are lacking somewhat.

I'm so glad to *finally* have pictures to post in this thread!  :)  The rats' nest (minus the rats):

The top of the cage includes a flat-bac water bottle, bowl, roll-a-nest (in medium, I think), chinchiller, two "flat stack" bricks, two rotating mirror parrot toys, an elbow pvc pipe, a small timber hideaway , two natural wood perches for climbing, and of course a big ol' fleece hammock (until it wears out and I can order a few from Dearpie!).

The bottom of the cage has yet another flat-bac waterbottle, a wood/rope parrot ladder, a T-shaped pvc pipe, two rainbow cat toys, an awesome wonderrodent cube (size 6x6x6), and a rather goth-looking wodent wheel.

In case you couldn't tell, the cage is a martin's 690.  Right now the family and I have it on a neat-o parrot cage stand in our kitchen, complete with shelves for all those ratties treats.  The cage is massive, but we all love it!  :thumbsup2:  If anyone has questions or comments, feel free to pm.

I purchased the R690 but modified. I asked for 12" doors so wheels can go in and out quite easily. I also asked for a pull out tray only because I hate having to lift the cage to remove the tray to clean it every week. I also asked them not to pre-assemle the levels and middle floor because I was going to change it a bit. The one direct from Martin's, I found the bottom level a bit steep. So I had some left over wire panels from my previous martins purchases and made me the perfect ramp.
Ok, here are the pics:

From far:

A closer look:

A side view:

The top level, as you can see, I load my cages with clutter, it keeps a mind busy:

The bottom level with my new sexy ramp:

And finally... throw some rats in!

They love it!! I do find this cage somewhat small for my taste. But I'm quite anal when it comes to cage size and my precious rats... but this cage will house Cado and Isabelle and one more baby will be joining this home... one of Rennie's babies direct from Balego!!

I finally got a picture taken to post on here.  This is showing my R695 compared to my homemade cage.  Furnishings get changed every week.  I have 4 girls in the 695 and the homemade cage is empty.  I only furnished it for the picture.

I got my Martin's today and finally have my own pictures to add!  It's a 690, but I lowered all the shelves.  The girls are still really young, so they've been either leaping onto the next level or pulling themselves up from the next ramp up...hehe.  I added a slightly smaller bright green hammock (both fleece) right above and slightly to the right of the purple one just a few minutes ago, but I'm too lazy to take more pictures just yet.

Closeup of the top:
Top has:  A baby toy I got at dollar tree, above the hammock.  (They like to climb on top of this and leap off onto the hammock.) An orange metal bed, a bunch of balls with holes in them zip-tied together as a climbing toy, a purple ferret bed with a bird ladder leading up to it, and a dog rop they can climb into the pink nest.

Closeup of bottom: (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/BekahrooBob/Rat%20cage/000_0621.jpg)
Bottom has: a ceramic green food bowl, another pink nest, their new tissue box, and the water bottle.  There's also a round rattle toy they keep shoving all over the place.

They've been going ape in there, running all over the place and bruxing loudly.  Now they're arguing loudly.  There's enough room for both of you in there, chickies.   ::)

This is my modified R-695. The full level at the bottom makes great use of all that wasted space. The girls and I love it!
I'm thinking about ordering a new front panel with different doors, but I'm still thinking about where to put them, and I don't have the money right now.
Close-ups:
The top half has a box, three hammocks, a Rody igloo, a Super Pet igloo, the food bowl, and a round bed (that they flipped over and hide under).
The bottom half has a Wonderrodent cube, a hammock, a cuddle cup (that they shoved against the wall), a PVC pipe, a big hammock, and the water bottle.
All of the fabric accessories with the green and blue print (the bed and two hammocks) were ordered from a woman on eBay. The two lower hammocks in the top half are Dearpie, and the top one is from StellaLuna Rattery. If you have any questions/comments, you can just PM me. :)

I just realized I never posted my Martin's F-475 that I had customized with rat wire! I added shelves to each level too. It's mostly sleeping spaces and no real toys, since they're only really in the cage to sleep! All the toys are out in my room.

That is Mowgley's cage.  He came with it. In it he has an igloo on the top floor, 2 hammocks (one on each level) and a tunnel made from pvc pipe on the bottom level, a box (i brought it home from work, it used to have medical gloves in it) and he has a little ball with a bell inside it.  I am planning on adding a wheel and switching out the hammocks for 2 new ones and adding more toys.

This is Baxter's cage, its an All Living Things cage. Its a bit sparse because I took out the hammocks. Baxter is about 2 1/2 years old and he kept having trouble getting into the hammock then falling out of it so I took out his hammock. His cagemate passed on 3 months ago and attempts to introduce him to my other baby boys have not been successful so Baxter lives alone.  :'(  He spends most of his time in the igloo and he only can stand about 30 seconds of free range time before going back to his cage.

I am finally posting decorating pics of Bailey and Merrick's cage. My dad and I built it ourselves out of two kitchen cabinets.  The boys have been living in it since April.

Inside they have, two hammocks, two ropes, a litter pan, igloo, two bowls, a Tshaped PVC pipe, two hanging baskets, a hanging toy, a tire swing, food dishes, and a water bottle.  I have a wheel for them (in fact, if you look above their polka dotted hammock, you can see the hole where it attaches to the cage) but they were afraid of it and refused use the entire second level when it was in the cage.

Now for pictures!

The upper levels, showing their home-made hammocks and tire swing:

The two cabinets open up for easy cleaning.  I absolutely love this feature of the cage.

And lastly, a picture of the cuties inside of their home :)

Well, here's my cage. It's a Martin's 670, with a wheel (that they actually use), a couple fun hammocks (one homemade!), bird toys, an igloo, and more lab blocks and greenies stashed away inside of it than they know what to with. Lots of purple, too!

I had those nice Critter Canteen water bottles, but they never used them! I ended up buying the cheapest flimsiest water bottles they had at Wal-Mart, because it's all they'll drink out of. Oh well.

Post by: Dori on December 10, 2006, 07:04:16 PM
I just combined two cages to make an Xtra large cage for my six boys. I had a super pet Xtra large and a super pet large so I combined them to make a cage that is 49 inches tall, 18 inches deep and 40 inches wide.
Here are the before and after pics.

I have not finished decorating yet, but so far I have three igloos, a hammock, three water bottles, four litter pans, several ferret tubes and one pvc pipe. There are also ten different levels for the boys to frolic on! I have a lot of shelves in there because I ordered several from the super pet site so I could make better use of the cage.

Okay, it's taken me forever (or so it seems), but I'm getting there. The boys got to move into their new home on Saturday. They seem to like all the space. I still need to get some more "stuff" to put in here. I washed their things, so I can put some of those in, but I have plans for adding to this cage! ;)
They wore me out during "playtime"! They decided they LOVED climbing up the cart and onto the cage. The landings were scaring me, so I took the HEAVY cage off and put it on the bed. They still climbed around on the cart (shoulda took pics of them walking around on the 3/4" frame like it was nothing, but I was too nervous when they ended up falling off, onto the edge of the metal shelf below). So I spent most of their playtime plucking them off and saying "No!" in my firm voice. Didn't work. One by one, after about 10 pluckings apiece for my rowdy explorers, Gollum and Strider, I plucked them and plunked them into their cage. These pics are from tonight.

This is the green version of the cage that's being bought like crazy by people on this forum.
I like it in a lot of ways, even though I had to modify it quite a bit. I zip-tied lots of plastic canvas to it. On the floor (just didn't like the set-up without it, there were sharp edges that I was afraid they would get cut on), on the shelves, and around the bottom edge to help keep bedding in. Then I discovered a gap across the front and back that had to be "sealed" with more plastic canvas and zip-ties, because the YN was leaking through.
The doors are a good size, I think (I'm not all familiar with this stuff - yet). They allow good access to all areas of the cage.
I ended up taking one of the ladders out because they were mostly climbing their "stuff" to get to the lower shelf. The HUGE hammock/safety net is mostly how they get up there. They don't pile into it like I had hoped though.
I used two of the perches to brace their dishes so they don't fall off the shelf their on. The plastic canvas made it very slippery under the plastic dishes. So far it's working well. I still have their hat to hang back in since I washed it, and I want to make a few tubes to hang (one to hang, one to be cleaned). I still need to make another hammock/safety net as well.
I really, really, REALLY love having it on the cart. They "sleep" (I wish) in my bedroom so the cats can't get to them, and it's so much easier to roll this big cage in, than it was to carry my Martin's 670. I'm just going to have to think of another way of getting them to their playroom now. I am too scared they'd really get hurt falling off the cart or cage.
I hope you enjoyed our tour. ;D

I finally got pics of my flight cage, but first I'll show off the large cage my brother and I made.  It's the same height and width of a R695, but about 3 less in depth.  It's able to house 4, but my lone blue guy, Reggie is in it now. (don't worry, he'll have cagemates once the boys from Kenya's litter are weaned.)

The first is a shot of their cage from about 10 feet away, Isabell's cage is next to the big one.

The one below the first is to get an idea of size, the person is about 5'7".

Next a close up of Izzy'z cage, it's a small hamster cage but it works for now till she can be put in the big cage.

Last is the large cage broken into three segments.

I think I need more items in my cage, if anyone can suggest what else to put in there (they chew on everything so it needs to be either inexpensive or not easy to destroy) please PM me!

Title: New Martin's R695
Post by: Dori on December 30, 2006, 03:06:57 PM
Here is my new Martin's R695 I bought as a Christmas gift for my 3 baby boys. Its my second Martin's R695 - I lent my other one to somebody so she could adopt rats from my shelter and she still has it so I bought another one last week. I am really not good at decorating, but I am trying. I have one hammock in it, one water bottle (another one in the wash) a wheel, a corner litter pan and a rectangular litter pan, two different style igloos, 1 plastic bin type box, one T shaped ferret tube, one straight ferret tube, one T shaped PVC pipe and a pink plastic tray from the dollar store. The cage still looks bare to me though. I am so glad I spent the extra $10 for the flip top lid, I just love it.

Please ignore my boyfriend's filthy room..

Here is my Martin's R-85 (?).  It's home to my two girls, Ally & Bo, and Bo's litter of 11 two-week-old babies!
They have...
- newly installed shag carpet ;D  (I found some scraps in our garage)
- a fleece Indianapolis Colts pocket hammock, I'm making another one to hang from the big shelf, so they'll have 2, though one seems to be enough since Bo doesn't really use hammocks right now anyway.
- pvc pipe, they love to sit in there & munch on things :)
- lots of cardboard toilet paper roll tubes, we seem to go through a lot of tp o.o
- a cuddle-cup thinger that no one really sleeps in, instead it gets chewed & peed on  :yelcutelaugh:
- a big purple igloo that no one really uses either
- lots of teenie Greenies, and usually a couple mongo ones tied to the sides to deter bar-chewing, though there's only one right now
- food & water, water is attached to the door so it's easier for me to tell when they need more!  (lactating Bo drinks a TON right now)  and the food dishes are rather
