I've posted an adoptions thread regarding reservations for the first Rizzle Rat Rattery litter.

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful smile in that last shot! She's adorably petite & papa is a very handsome buck! They should have some gorgeous babies for sure!

Yes, COVE Pflueger of RIZL, the youngest of the gentlemen and really too young to drink that much, is feeling the aftereffects today. He's quite hungover. Every time I turn on the light, he makes a pitiful whine of, "Mooom, too bright!"

Luckily, Gideon- the bad boy of the bunch, and a chronic partier- knows a few good hangover cures. He's taken pity on Pflueger and shared some, though he insists on whispering, so I'm still not sure what they are...

My SO, himself a former party animal, has also been helping poor hung over Pflueger. He explained that getting some carbs in the stomach will soak up some of the excess from drinking too heavily, and helped out by making the boys a carb-heavy snack.

Exciting news! Titania and Oberon were paired last night, and I observed mating! Titania had a :confused: mucus plug this morning, and had lost a gram scampering around the cage with Oberon from 10 PM to 7 AM.

Photos were taken of the couple (pre-mating), will post them soon.

Awwww Love was in the air at the RRR house last night!  Sqweeeeee my babies are being made!  LOL

The litter theme will be Shakespeare. I thought of making it more specific, but I really want a Desdemona for my keeper girl- a spunky REDhead! So, there just might be a Snug, Bottom, Snout, and Flute, but you'd have to move out here.... that's not too much of a sacrifice for rats, right?  :rattysmiley:

At this point it is too early to be sure whether or not Titania is pregnant. I will update as we go!

Titania has gained four grams  :party: but still too early to tell if that means anything!

Nooooooooooooo!!!  Not my Ojai girly and TEK boys!  In that case, I will take Cecil too!  Darwin would love to have another brother to wrestle and powergroom!

 :yelcutelaugh: They can compare notes on weird skin issues! Cecil got his tail washed Friday and is STILL sulking.

Someone on here suggested taking a bit of cotton wool (cotton ball) with olive oil on it.. and rubbing it all over their tails... the -other- rats and they themselves will groom all the oil off taking the tail gunge with it!  Works like a charm =)

Before that I had been using baby wash and a soft (very soft) toothbrush and they HATED it... I love the olive oil thing.. and it's good for them!

What is this tail gunge all about?  What is it and how did they get it?

I've always had boy ratties before... and a lot (MOST) of them are quite lazy about grooming their tails...  So they get this patchy oogie yucky dirty looking stuff that I assume is just a collection of dirt, unshed skin cells, buck grease and soil from dragging their tails around behind them and never cleaning them...  I'll use one of Reed's ratties as an example.. but most of my males get this way from time to time ^^

Good idea! I'll do that regularly from now on. You should have seen Duchess's tail! It was so gross! Everyone got baths and a tail scrub.

Thats a great suggestion!  Funny thing, is that my boys are meticulous about cleaning their tails.  I just looked and none of theirs are dirty (maybe they practice better hygiene because they are neutered), but my girls tend to have the dirty tails!  Ewww!  Maddie always has the dirtiest.

Yes - use the olive oil. It is good for their skin and coat and they love licking it off their tails. It forces them to groom themselves before their cagemates - lol.

I just don't recommend using the olive oil just before you put them on aspen bedding. Then they get to lick wood dust. Ewww. LOL. 

I think bedding + laziness leads to that. Some beddings probably allow it faster than others.

If the tail is that grungy - then you can rinse it in warm water before the olive oil. That helps to get off some of it. I've tried toothbrushes (someone recommended that to me years ago) and the rat abhorred it and cursed me.

Tiny has gained 8 grams since mating! Of course, it could be all the treats  :cheeky: but Una, her same-age cagemate, has not gained a similar amount.

Today's weight: 272g

I found with my girls they'd gain around 10g in the first few days, even off a bit, then slowly gain weight the second week, and a lot of weight the third week :) Have fun with her! But the waiting really hurts...  :BlueDumboSmileTongue:

Ohhhhh.......I want a rat like that!  My girls are always on the go--they never keep still.  And if they're on me, it's always, "ok, I been here long enough now--where's the treat?"

Tiny thanks everyone for the well wishes. Her weight gain has been a little slow this week, so I think perhaps she will deliver a little later than Tuesday- of course, it being the first litter I've bred, I don't know for sure! She is up to 321g today and acting very silly- I gave her some paper towels to see if she was ready to start nesting, and instead she laid them out flat on the top shelf of her cage and sprawled out belly-down on them. I think her poor round tummy was too warm!  :yelcutelaugh:

Annie, don't worry, Tiny gets looooads of belly kisses. I have waited so long to have a big round pregnant tummy to kiss in the house! I love pregger tummies. I will be sad to see the belly go, but I think a heap of cheepin' eeps will make up for it...


Roadhouse- yes, I'm nervous!  :shocked2: I had a terrible dream last night that Tiny had eight babies and four were normal happy fawns but the other four were all strange mutant rats- one was just tailless (which I sure wouldn't mind!) but the other three were just plain disturbing. One had two heads, the other had four eyes, and the final one had six legs! I stressed and stressed and stressed and decided to send the four normal ones to Staci and WanderingMind since they made their reservations first, and keep the four deformed mutant babies myself to make sure they were kept safe and not abused or turned into circus sideshows... they all thankfully stayed healthy for the most part, but they were really disturbing. Now I'm REALLY nervous!

Seriously, she has been an egg yolk FIEND since she has been preg. When she gets an egg she peels the shell off, then separates the yolk and eats that, then steals all the other girls' yolks and leaves the whites.

Ha! so much for extra protein, eh? Maybe what they need is extra fat... or  :cookie: :cookie: :cookie:

I'll say she has 11-12 pups in there. The average in my rattery is 13, but she looks just a smidge smaller. But litter size is genetic, so what are the females in her family usually throwing?

Still no babies this morning! Up to 330 grams.

She shredded some fleece and piled it in a corner overnight, though, after leaving all her fleece intact for the past two days, so I'm hopeful! Today is day 22. Breakfast was organic yogurt, blueberries, homemade granola, and wheat germ, which she very much enjoyed.

There is a strong history of litters of 12 in the family- she was from a litter of 12, both her parents were out of 12, and the male was out of a litter of 12- and her aunt recently had 12. However, her brother and the male's sister recently had a litter of 16 together! I am hoping for more like 8, a nice mid-size litter, but knowing her she will surprise me with either 4 or 18....  :doh:

Well if she made a nest she will have them today. Mine have theirs from 9am -11am. They always make the nest the day before. So you are close!

Still no babies today! I think she has been reading the board and trying to trick me  :yelcutelaugh: because this morning she had torn down her old nest completely and built a totally new one, on the other side of the cage, with a different design. She was too busy fixing up her new nest even to stop for a treat!

So, that means there's still some time to play guess the size of the litter....  ;D

Oooo she is going to be one of those anal momma's who has to have everything just a certain way.  LOLOLOLOLOLOL..

If she is anything like all of my prior rescue mommas she will build her nest right under the water bottle so that the bottle can leak onto the nest and make a nice yucky mess.  I think they do that so that they have convenience as I have caught momma's drinking while nursing and such.  Drives me nuts when they do that.

actually it makes sense she would go after the yolks they are packed full of folic acid which is good for fetal development.  I've  known a few women who craved egg yolk like crazy in their pregnancy's.

I can't believe we're all so hooked on this litter!   When I got up this morning, first thing I did was run to the computer to see if she'd had the BB's yet. :yelcutelaugh: :yelcutelaugh: :yelcutelaugh:

Oldsgal- She did EXACTLY that, how did you know?  ::) Rats... sheesh.

Myrhme- It must be a terrible case of fawn deficiency!  :o Didn't you know that people who don't have enough round fawn bellies to kiss can develop symptoms like checking their email every 10 minutes for thread notifications, and turning on the computer before even brushing their teeth in the morning? The only treatment is heavy doses of Goosemoose several times a day!
 
Camarattery- We're on day 23 now  :) - so at the upper end of the 21-23 day window.


I'm at work now, but my roommate is under strict orders to call at the first signs of an eep, and no word so far! I'll update you all again as soon as I get home tonight.

Oh, ok my girls have their babies at 23 days on the dot.

Okay guys I am here....

Good news and bad news.

Bad news: No bubs today. She looked like she was getting ready to have them last night, but then nothing!

Good news: She is feeling fine. She is still nesting, but also eating and drinking well. I've been in touch with the vet and have an appointment for tomorrow (which I'll cancel if she pops during the night) and we have a FANTASTIC e-vet nearby who I can run to at any time if necessary. She's eating and drinking and has no signs of distress. In fact, if it weren't for the belly, the nesting, and some blood spotting last night, I wouldn't even think she was pregnant. I am pretty stumped as of now and am tearing out my hair wanting her to HURRY UP ALREADY! But... she is a happy energetic little girl who has made a huge nest, and I am thankful for her good health and lack of stress as of now. If there are any problems we will be at the vet before you can say "Dr. Fitzgerald" (yup for those of you who don't know, my nearest e-vet is the Animal Planet Emergency Vets clinic- I have 100% faith in their abilities) but I think all is well and she is just having an atypical pregnancy. Gestation can potentially be 19-26 days; it's just rather unusual for them to go to the very end of that range! Of course, Tiny has never done anything typically- she is at the outer edges of all the ranges, LOL! She is only 264 grams pre-pregnancy weight, at the very low end of the "adult girl" weight, and she is at the upper end of the "how often they boggle" range for all rats  :cheeky:

Dang! I sure hope you don't have to see Dr. Fitzgerald (well, except maybe socially)! C'mon, Tiny, have your babies already! First litters are always nerve wracking, even when they go smoothly. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things go well for all.

Oh Phew!  Thank you for the update.  I was starting to get really scared that something truly bad had happened and you just weren't ready to tell us. 

Tiny is gonna be fine!  She is just making sure her buns are well baked before letting them out of the oven!

Well I am crossing my fingers that everything goes well!

Again with the good news and bad news.

Bad News: I believe Tiny's body has decided to reabsorb the litter. I was concerned about this for the past week, but as a character in a favorite book of mine is fond of saying, "from your lips to the Gods' ears," so I was not going to think negative thoughts prematurely. Her weight gain was steady, but slower than I have seen on other breeders' weight charts, and after the delay in delivering her weight stalled and today has dropped fairly significantly. Why did this happen? Well, I don't know, but I do not think it was either a weakness in her OR something that could have been prevented. I have talked to other breeders and sometimes reabsorption just happens, for whatever reason their body says they are not going to have a litter this week, and they reabsorb. I wonder if perhaps it was because she is so very small, but who knows? All I know is that she no longer feels pregnant. I am neither a vet nor a psychic, so I don't know for sure that that is what happened, but it sure seems that way, and her vet agrees.

Good News: Again, she is feeling fine. She is eating and drinking and acts like nothing ever happened. I am glad to have my Tiny girl safe and sound. I have been in close contact with her vet all day- we talked four times in the space of a few hours. We will see about antibiotics if the vet feels she needs them, but she seems much more herself today than she did the last couple of days. Whatever she needs, she will get, but for now I trust that her body knew what was best, as ratties often do. IF we try again with Tiny, it will be with the close guidance and supervision of both her vet and the many wonderful rat people who are always there to support me, and it will be after plenty of time to recover. However, as she is already almost seven months old, I think it may be that the best decision is to be thankful for a wonderful pet and let her be just that. All my rats are pets first, and I would rather not risk her health by trying again too soon or by trying for a first litter when she is on the older side. So, no RIZL babies this spring, but come summer or fall, and when our first litter finally does come, you can bet we will  give this thread another shot, and you all will get more fawn horde pics than you can handle!

I want to thank everyone who has been there for me on the phone and online through all of this. It is not the outcome I hoped for from my first planned breeding, but it is also far from the worst case scenario, and as the saying goes, "Raisins happen." I knew when I decided to breed that I can get the best rats I can find and do the best I can by them, and sometimes things will still not go as planned. I have been prepared from the start to deal with every scenario from best case to worst, and this one falls somewhere in between. I am more sorry to disappoint the people who were hoping to adopt from this litter than anything else, but I am again just thankful that, though we do not have a litter to celebrate, we have a happy and healthy Titania to celebrate. I am very thankful for that, and for the friendship and support of rat people all over. I have been waiting a long time for my first litter, and waiting a little longer won't kill me.

Soooo on that note, farewell to Titania's belly, long live the future RIZL bellies! There are things in the works for later this year that I think everyone will be VERY excited about, but I'm just going to keep you all in suspense until I'm ready to make official announcements. :thumbsup: For now, I will be putting as much time and energy as I am able into my new role on the NIRO Board of Directors, and into planning the NIRO fun show this June, which should be a blast! All that really matters, is that Tiny is a healthy girl.  These things do happen, for whatever reason... maybe there would have been complications had she had this litter.  At least you have your pets!  What an ordeal, for Tiny and for you.  We will all just look forward to fawn bubs in the future though!!  This just shows that not all breedings go as planned, especially for those who are breeding to better the rats!  Go figure, right? lol

I am sorry that this is not the outcome you had hoped for. Unfortunately things do happen. I am happy that Tiny is okay.

Sometimes it just seems to be Murphy's Rat Law. You brag and brag about a litter. . .you put the pair together. . . and NOTHING. Meanwhile on the other side of the country/state/street a rat escapes their cage - no one notices mom is pregnant until 20 babies are born.

Give Tiny those chocolate chips anyway for being a good girl!

I am very sorry that this happened but you are a very smart girl and you understand that it does happen and were prepared for it to happen.  Tiny is going to be fine.  That is what is important here. 

But even with all of the above knowledge I know that you have to be a bit upset.  The build up, anticipation, and then no babies.  Huge hugs to you.  We are thinking of you and you know all of us at this rat community are here to lean on for support.

Now goes to sit and wait anxiously for her newest announcement!

Absolutely the most important thing is that we have a healthy happy tiny! She is a beautiful rat, and is blessed to have an owner who is a caring as you! good luck in your future ratty endeavors, I think it's safe to say we will all be routing for you just as much then as we are now!

Oh wow! I didn't read about your re absorption until now! Sometimes this thing doesn't let me know when there was a new post. I am sorry to hear that. And glad mom did it this way rather than labor problems which can be fatal.

I for one have never had this happen, after 70 litters. I am sorry you didn't get your babies!

Thanks, everyone. Tiny is feeling much better today and is ready to go back with her girls, but I'm keeping her apart for a few days anyway, just to give her a little time to putter around before being back in the midst of the chaos that is the young girls' cage.... Una likes to hump everyone when she's in heat, and Crimp powergrooms her pals constantly  ::)

Awwwww, I'm sorry :(  Rotten way it works, a wonderfully planned and healthy litter doesn't work out - yet rescue has to take in rats from idjits who just "look" at boys and get pregnant.  Sigh.
