I tell ya... these wounded birds keep seeking me out this summer! Tonight my sis was taking a walk and found this gorgeous black and white bird fluttering around on the sidewalk. She said it could fly low but it was having some trouble. It has wounds on it's back and some scratches on either side under the wings. As far as I can tell it's been attacked by a cat, judging by the scratches. The two nastiest looking wounds are on the back-- and I think they look infected. The scratches on the side are shallower, dry and scabbed over. It is perky, able to stand and walk around, and doesn't seem like it's a stranger to humans, which makes me think it's a domestic dove or pigeon (also it's coloration is nothing like I've ever seen on a wild bird). Upon some advice from a very knowledgable Petsmart employee, I have left the bird with some water and mix of dove seed and finch seed. He also recommended that I wash the wounds with warm water with a teeny bit of vineger mixed in to disenfect. I have already done that and now I've "tucked in" the birdie for the night with a soft towel and a heating pad. I'm going to look for and call a vet that treats birds tomorrow... I can't really afford to take it in but hopefully I can get some advice.
Any advice from ya'll is welcomed, as well as tips for identifying the species.
Its eye looks all black in the pic, but it is actually a dark chocolate-brown ring around a black pupil. Don't wild pigeons have red eyes?
Also a link to a pic of it's nasty looking

It looks similar to the pied ringneck dove
But I don't really know much about birds and species and such at all, so I dunno. But s/he is really pretty.

The boo boo looks more like nasty puncture wounds from the canine ( fang ) teeth of a dog or cat. On the other ( opposing ) side is there a similar wound? Have you tried a "Wildlife Refuge/ Reserve? An Animal Emergency Clinic usually has the phone numbers on hand. It is definitely a Dove.

Thanks for the replies! Hmm, it does look like that pic Apopli, but it's missing the "ring"... it's certainly possible though.
No... it doesn't have similar punctures on the opposing side. What makes me think it's caused by a cat is because it has long shallow scratches on its sides under it's wings that look very much (in my experience) like cat scratches. I can't imagine this bird being in such good shape after being chomped by a dog! Although now my sister just pointed out that it could have been a racoon... who knows! I gave it a thorough examination and I think I foind all the wounds.
Our local Wildlife Clinic has been closed down ( I had just started volunteering there too! *wah*) and the other closest one is waaaay too far away for me without a car. Also I know that if they looked at it and said "Nope, that's a domestic dove" they would send me right out the door. I think my best bet at this point is to call a vet and hope they will see it. I know it's probably going to need antibiotics... definately if it's an animal bite of some sort. There is always the chance that I can just take it to school (I'm in the vet tech program) and maybe one of my teachers (vets) will know what to do/have the right meds on hand.

Aw, such a pretty bird! Looks like a pigeon, but pigeons are doves anyway, so it matters little.
You'll want to get him on Baytril. Our hospital doses at 14mg/kg. From the photo, the wings look OK. Just take a look, they should hang symmetrically, neither one should hang or be held higher up than the other. If they do (they should cross at the ends), it'll probably just be supportive care. 7-10 days of antibiotics, food/water.
Keep us posted & feel free to ask any more questions.

Oh the poor baby, those certainly are teeth marks! There could have been numerous small creatures which caused that though, several of the smaller none canine animals can leave scratch marks which look similar to a cat.
Either way, poor little one, so pretty!

Ouch, thank god he/she is with you. How can you find out if he's a pet? I'd hate to see him/her get fixed up then end up back in the wild whch he is not prepared for. I guess his attitude towards humans will say a lot.
Give him a gentle pet on the head from me!!

I got some advice from a pigeon and dove forum. They recommended clavamox at "up to 125mg/kg TID orally up to three weeks." They said baytril works too but clavamox is a broader spectrum and better for more serious infections? The bird is still doing well this morning so I don't think it's a very serious infection yet, so I'll just see what meds I can get and hope for the best.
Also, I have no scale and the only local bird vet won't see it because it might be wild, so I will need to get meds myself and dose it myself. Do you know how much a pigeon weighs? I held it and just by feel I doubt it's over a pound, but it's definately got some meat on it's bones.
I checked the wings and they look good to me.
Thanks for the advice!

Could you smuggle it into a nearby Post Office? Most have scales, by the P.O. boxes, lol. I need to go and buy scales. It would save me a lot of wondering.

Or do you know anyone who works in an office type setting. Most offices have small postal scales.

I doubt this is a pet bird; he does not have a leg band.
And as a Native New Yorker, I must say that in general, rock doves (pigeons) are not particularly wild in general. So the bird may be reasonably comfortable with humans without actually being domesticated.

Since he's most likely wild you should call a wildlife rehab and let them take care of him. Their equipped to give him the best and most accurate care possible.

A general weight I use for pigeons if I don't have a scale is around 300grams (.300kg).
So if you were going for Clavamox, you'd do 125(mg/kg) X .300 = 37.5, the divide that by the concentration (I don't have a box of Clavamox at home, so I don't know the concentration offhand).
That's a pretty bad boo-boo. I'd be REALLY careful that no flies get near him. Keep the carrier covered with mesh so no flies can get into it.
Pretty bird - thanks for helping!

Thanks for the info.
I couldn't get any meds today. One vet turned me down, the other never got back to me (though I called a few times). I think they weren't sure wether they wanted to just sell me meds for a wild animal... sigh. And yeah, I do see now that it's pretty obvious it's wild. Should have thought of the leg band!
Good news though: the two worst wounds (ones in pic) are looking much better. They are not so "wet" looking and they look like they are closing up. Pink, but no bleeding and no discharge I can see. Will try to get pics, but birdie is getting very perky and not so sure if he wants to be within sight of me anymore! Guess that's a good sign too? He feels like he has good temperature and he's very alert and bright eyed, walking around and looking at his surroundings.
At the moment the bird is in a plastic bin with a screen on top. Didn't think of flies, but I'm glad now I used the bin!
As for taking it to a rehabber... the main clinic near us is closed until further notice. There's another one close enough to get to, but when I called today I got a recording saying they were closed for admissions today. And admissions are by appointment only. So I'll keep calling.
I really hope I can do something for this bird.. it's doing so well at the moment, I'd feel terrible if it took a turn for the worse because I can't get it meds or proper care. Everyone I talked to today has lectured me that I should take it to the Widlife Clinic, and they act like I'm lying when I say it's been closed all summer! I should know, I was volunteering there! Sheesh... ugh sorry I'm just getting a bit frustrated.

That's great that the wounds are drying up. But keep the screen on.Maggots are not a pretty thing
I can't make you any promises because things can always turn around, but the fact that the pigeon has survived a few days without antibiotics is a good sign. If he makes it past three days, he probably has a good chance. But still try & get the antibiotics. Would your rat's vet perhaps sell you some Clavamox or Baytril?
Most vets will not give you meds without your bringing the animal in. (t's illegal to dispense drugs without seeing the animal). So, if you make an appointment, you might fare better.
Once the bird starts to feel better, get prepared to be wing-slapped. It's pretty funny. They get all defensive & face you sideways, growl then BAM! you've been slapped by a wing. They don't all do it, but most wild pigeons do.
Keep us posted.

Got some Baytril! My vet is the greatest.
Kind of an adventure getting the stuff into it's mouth, but with help from my sister it went just fine and took it's meds like a good little birdie. I think I'm going to have to watch out for that wing slapping soon, now that it's had a taste of the nasty Baytril.
Also, it doesn't seem to be eating alot. I have a dish of food and I also scattered a bit of seed on the floor around the dish. But it doesn't seem to be hungry. In fact, it prefers to use it's food dish as a "nest" and toilet. Whenever I come to check on it it's sitting in the dish! It's kinda cute but gross because I keep having to throw out the poopy food. I gave it a rock and some branches to perch on, if that's what it wants. Anything I can do to encourage it to eat?

It's actually easy to syringe a pigeon once you get the hang of it. You can put like half of a 1 cc syringe down a pigeon's beak.
Here's what you do:
Hold the bird.
Open the beak.
Insert the syringe down the right side of the bird's beak. Pigeons have a huge crop where they hold their food while its being digested. They can hold about 35cc's in it.
What is the Baytril dose, about .18-.20 cc's?
Just make sure you do it down the side of the mouth and not in the middle (where the trachea is).
But it sounds like you're doing great on your own.

Thanks for that advice Eileen. I have done that on a baby straling before, I just wasn't sure if I could do it with a pigeon.
The dose is .22 cc 2x a day. Is that too much? I doubt *all* of it got down it's throat the way I was doing it, but if I'm going to be putting it directly into it's throat I don't want to overdose it.
More good news! I just checked on it and it's eaten a whole lot of seed! I'm so glad!
And it really likes the rock I gave it. It spends all it's time sitting there looking around. Too cute! This is reminding me of the good old days when I had reaised a baby pigeon, who grew up nice and healthy (and followed me around everywhere!), but unfortunately got eaten by a hawk a few months later.

The dose we use is 14mg/kg. If your bird is about .300kg, this is how I calculated:
14mg/kg X .300kg = 4.2mg. The Baytril we use is 22.7mg/ml, so if you divide 4.2mg
by 22.7, you get .185cc. According to our Exotic Animal Formulary, Baytril is given once a day. Did the vet dose it at .22 twice a day? You might want to check it.
And yes, they LOVE to sit on rocks. (I guess that's why their real name is Rock Dove...)
Sounds like he's doing well. You will miss him when it's time for him to go. I've rehabbed a few pigeons, but one in particular I still think about. I can't find his sittin' on his rock picture, but this is him:

Aww, cute pigeon! Love the little white spot.
Yes, the vet said .22 cc every 12 hours (on the label as well), but then again, this is not an avian vet and she was probably going on her experience with cats and dogs. But since you've obviously done this plenty of times before, I will switch to once a day, and lower the dose a bit. I already gave it the second dose for today... do you think that will hurt it?

No that's fine. I believe with our turtles we start out with a higher dose & then the second dose we half it.
