Hi!

WWW
« on: May 04, 2006, 08:08:00 PM »

I finally saw some goldfinches feeding at the finch sock I hung out for them:

They're eating Nyger seeds from a net-like feeding tube made especially for finches. These photos are so small and not very detailed because I have to photograph at a distance, from indoors (through a window) with my puny camera, lol.

I buy my Nyger seed online at http://www.nyger.com/ because it's home grown in the U.S., and birds prefer this type of "live" seed. I highly recommend this company for your finch food needs!

I'll have to buy one of those!!  There are a TON of finches/sparrows that live outside and use the bird feeder I have now.

I have two pet finches, too.  Smiley

(sorry that it's kind of a big pic.)

Excellent!

We finally picked up some nyger seed at Gro-Moore farms for the finches that come around here. We have one regular goldfinch (though looking at how yellow yours is, I'd wager I may have a female around, too! I thought it was a male still in winter plumage), and a couple house finches.

We've got quite a collection at our feeder... red-winged blackbirds, cardinals, grackles (bullies), mourning doves, house sparrows, slate juncos, house finches, brown-headed cowbirds, chipping sparrows, a bunch of different woodpeckers at the suet (downy, hairy, red-bellied), and two newcomers this week that are awesome: a Northern Flicker, and about five White-Crowned Sparrows). There's also the male and female Mallards that visit the seed dish, the squirrels (two of them), and... a bunny! LOL! He usually comes around in the evening, after dark, but there was a VERY entertaining battle between him and a squirrel over the weekend!

Edit: I just read a little bit more about the white crowned sparrow in a book I have, and they're not even supposed to be here... the closet shaded area on the map is southern PA, in the winter only. They must be on their way to northern canada, where they're marked for summertime. Looks like they're quite common west of the Rockies, but NOT on the East coast at all! I may never see them again... wow!

Do you guys get a lot of hummingbirds?  It came to mind since I just saw one - they're all over the place around here.  Smiley

I'm told the ruby-throated ones exist around here in the summer, but I have yet to ever see one.

The only one I have ever seen in person was when I visited my dad in San Diego.

Nutkitty- are those zebra finches?  We have zebra finches when I was little.  A male and female too.  They laid lots of eggs and had several babies!

Yup, they're zebra finches, and a male and female...

BUT!  I always take away their eggs.  I feel really bad doing it, but I don't want babies.   Undecided

You should replace the egss with those fake ones. That way they'll conitnue to sit on the egss thinking they'll hatch and you won't put so much stress on the female when she has to lay eggs over and over.

Is it easy to tell the fake ones from the real ones?  I'd hate to miss a real one and have it hatch!

I'm getting them a larger cage (they aren't in a cage too small for them now, btw...  I just want to spoil them and I'll have more room) after I move, but I don't want them having babies even then!

Wow, you have a lot of different birds in your area.  We mostly have sparrows, but I haven't identified what kind they are -- the markings are different, but I've been lazy about looking them up.  A few times I've seen red-headed woodpeckers, blue jays, and a nuthatch (I think).  I've always hoped to see a real bluebird, but so far I haven't -- and they are New York's state bird!

We've got tons of squirrels, I'm happy to say, because I feed them sunflower seeds on purpose.  A couple of them come right up on to our porch.  Wish we had a bunny or two, but they're very rare in our neighborhood.  At night we get raccoons, possums and skunks, lol!

I think we're supposed to have hummingbirds in this area, but I've never seen one here.  When I lived in San Francisco I put up a feeder and saw lots of beautiful hummingbirds right at my window!  The feeder had a suction cup on it so it stuck right to the window glass.

Thank you!!  Smiley

What I especially like is when I walk into the livingroom in the morning and turn on the light - they immediately start their chirping!  I love that they aren't too loud.  I admit the way they "meep meep meep!" is a BIG reason why I decided to get finches. Smiley

It's also cute when they hear a loud sound from the TV, or if my loud arse bengal maows too loudly... there goes the chirp fest!   Yellow Cute Laugh

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can easily see a difference in the real vs. fake eggs. The fake ones are made of plastic.

I feed the birds here too.  We get finches, chickadees, bluejays, cardinals, hairy and downy woodpeckers, hummingbirds and the occasional oriole too.  :-)
I put out about four different feeders, the hummingbirds of course get nectar, the woodpeckers and bluejays get a nutty seed mix, the cardinals enjoy that too and then the smaller birds get a smaller mix.  I get my seeds from Wildbirdsunlimited.com

 Smiley

oh and I also put out water for the birds and the occasional suet cake.

Yeah, bluebirds are supposed to be on the rise again due to efforts with nesting boxes and such at parks since 1978, but they were almost wiped out by the European Starlings until the '70s. The House Sparrows aren't helping either...

The book I have has a little map of North America, color coded for each bird with Summer habitat (yellow), Winter habitat (blue) and Year Round habitat (green). For the Starling, almost ALL of North America is green. The only part that isn't is up at the Arctic Circle! Oy!

European Starlings were brought to NYC in 1890. Since then, they've taken over. Thanks a lot, Europe! LOL!

This is the book I have:

I'd thought of getting finches, but my cats are VERY interested in birds, and I'd hate to wind up with a cage on the floor because of it....

If John and I were to ever get any birds, I think we would get finches... just because of the quiet little meep meep instead of the squawking. I can't stand loud birds. Ugh.

I like the Black-hooded Nun and the White-hooded Nun finches... they're nifty.

My cage is literally set ON the floor, so my cats can't knock it over.

But honestly, my cats ignore them now.  They're just bored of them, I guess.  Wink

Today the finches were out in force!  Here's a photo of them just after a thunderstorm.  There are eleven of them at the two sock feeders:

Those are beautiful Nun finches, especially the white-hooded one.  I know what you mean about loud birds.  My sister had a shrieking conure for a while.  It was just awful -- you couldn't carry on a conversation in the same room with it, because of the volume of bird shrieks.  They had to find another home for it (with someone who didn't mind the noise).

I heard that a lot of conures end up in rescues for that very reason - being too loud.  Dave wanted one for a while...  I'm so glad we didn't get one.

As for the fake finch eggs...  I doubt I'd see them up close.  Maybe they could be marked so it'd be easier to tell.

My cats knocked the zebra finch cage over twice in four years... Foster cats knocked it both times and never did it again.  However, when we moved to our new apt. I popped the 150 to get this monstronsity....  http://www.birdcagesgalore.com/bird_cages013016.jpg
The cats can't knock it over and can't fit their toesies in.  The birds are nonplussed by the cats' proximity and the cats can watch the birds til their eyes bug out.  It's all good.

To the OP, NICE photos.  I love the little wild finchies... they are so cute.  Boy, do your kiddos look happy. Smiley
