A few years ago my sister bought a budgie who we called Merlin. We hand trained him so he was hand and shoulder friendly, he always used to sit by my face and lick it. (Which terrified my sister.) We loved him dearly, but she began to grow bored of him and he was let out less often. So, I bought him a friend (also a gift for my sister), a second budgie called Morgana (though male, oddly enough.) They acted like an old married couple with gentle arguing, and Morgana loved Merlin to bits, they got along really well.

Then my sister moved out, pretty much abandoning the budgies with my family. We have a lot of pets each that we all care for, so the budgies only got minimal attention and care (that is, enough care to live fine and dandy, but no real love and affection). I'm the only one who doesn't work in this house, so I did the best I could, but my devotion has always been to my gerbils which are in my bedroom. (Budgies in the living room.)

Well, today we got back from shopping, and Morgana was dead. No marks on his body, no sign of a cause, plenty of food and water.

So, I finally gave in to my sister's irresponsibly behaviour. I have decided to make Merlin fully my responsibility.

I immediately cleaned the cage out and Merlin is now in my bedroom, with a treat of millet and a lovely clean cage, on top of my chest of drawers. (My gerbils are on my desk, both are very close to me.) He will now get the full love and attention that he deserves, and will also be able to come out of the cage again.

I outright refuse to let whatever happened to Morgana happen to Merlin.

Also, any tips of how to keep an adorable budgie happy are 100% welcome! :'D

I'll take a photo of him in a moment and upload it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention -

Yes, Merlin probably is a girl.

The reason we call 'her' he is because he used to have a ceres infection that the vet could find no cause for. We used a mite lotion to try and help because that's what it looked like, and his entire ceres became swollen and the colour of a girl's ceres. (That is, before we used the lotion - not that the lotion caused it.)

His breathing got all icky because his nostrils were being blocked, but then the top layer of his icky ceres basically came off, leaving the original ceres all lovely underneath, allowing him to breathe again.

Now his ceres is always that colour but oddly shaped, and we don't know if it's that colour because he's female or because of his past problems, so 'he' has become a habit. C:

(His cage mate, Morgana, was a definite male - very blue ceres.)
