Heatherama,Your hair is way too super cool!Mine is red and black right now, too, but it don't look as great as yours!
That's the best pic I have right now, sorry yall gotta look up my nose!Red and black are my favorite colors. Most of my clothes are red and black, too. And,that mullet guy is my brother!Just joking.I'm pretty sure I've met him in my hometown, though!Just joking again...
There's alot of people here with 'manic panic hair' and piercings and such, and that makes me smile. :)Used to the only time I saw that was at the Marilyn Manson forum!Alot of pet lovers are a little 'different',I've noticed!

Yeah! A fellow red and black fan! They are my favs too. Maybe that's why I'm so into the White Stripes? Or...maybe it's Jack Black?
It may sound a little silly, but I identify a lot with ratties...they have a bad rep because of "the plague" and people just generally thinking they are gross because of their tails or some weird thing like that...I've always been a little different and liked a lot of things most people don't see any beauty in. You can't judge a person because of their hair or their piercings or their religion...everyone has some depth to them, you just need to get to know them instead of forming an opinion based on something as silly as hair.

so, why is it okay to make fun of, make assumptions and judgments about people for mullets and rat tails, but only narrow-minded jerks make judgments about those with mohawks and unusual hair coloring???
If we aren't supposed to judge people by their appearance, then assuming someone is a classless, ignorant hick because they have a mullet is just as rude and offensive and narrow-minded as assuming someone is an anti-social, druggie loser because of a green mohawk.
Can't have it both ways.

rowan, he's adorable! almost makes me kind of consider kids a little bit, almost.
i've never been a parents, and don't intend to be, and i understand that actually having kids may change my views on things... but i would have no problem with crazy haircuts and styles. what would matter to me, is why they want it. i'd ask them "ok, why do you want your hair like that?" if their logic is "it looks so awesome!" than sweet deal, lets go! an answer like "timmy's hair looks like this" or "so i look cooler" might warrant a long discussion about what's important in life.
i've always gotten my hair dyed and cut because i like the way it looks, and i like the way it feels. not for any other reason, and i think that's the correct reason to do something like that. i feel more like myself with a lip piercing and green streaks. (though, at the moment, my job doesn't permit this, so now i just have lots of little dents where piercings used to be. keep in mind, kids - piercings leave scars!)
my mother got my ears peirced when i was two. i'm glad that she did, really, because i always loved wearing earrings - however, i do think it would have been more logical to wait until she could ask me and explain that it would be painful. i don't remember at all, but i'm sure at the time i was quite annoyed.

It's fine for people to assume the worst about mohawk-sporting kids and adults -- I'm just saying that a heck of a lot fewer people these days think badly about mohawks than mullets, so it's not a haircut I'd worry about giving the OP's kid.

All I know is if I had the choice between the two, my kid would get a mohawk over a mullet ANY day.

Understandable. But the question is whether that is because you really just like the look better? Or is it because you make certain judgments about people based on the hairstyle and you wouldn't want your child to be judged the way you judge those with a mullet?

Mostly because my mother got a neighbor to give me a mullet type haircut when I was little, and I absolutely hated it.

LOL -- PTSD due to a haircut in childhood.
However, I have to confess I had a similar experience. I got the "Dorothy Hamill" cut when I was 8. I guess I agreed to it, but I think I didn't really know what my mom was talking about or be able to envision how it would actually look. And of course, it was never as fluffy as hers. So, I looked like a boy basically. And I distinctly remember one event where an older guy at some public place said something perfectly harmless, but it was clear that he thought I was a boy. I was quite offended and told him off "Don't you see the earrings?
? How could you think I was a boy because boys don't wear earrings". Which was true when I was 8.

Yup! It scarred me for life!
I remember my mom taking me to get one of those tight curled perms too when I was little.. GOD. Couldn't she just leave my hair alone? It was cute and naturally wavy already.
So uhmmm... yeah. When I have kids, I'll never have their hair done a way they really don't want themselves. Of course I'll prod them into styles I think is best for them.

Alot of you will probally disagree with me,but I think it's ok to compromise with your kids on alot of things, except when it comes to their safety, health, and future wellbeing.Especially when they are older.
Everyone parents differently, though. There's no exact formula for raising kids the 'right' way(though I really wish there was,it would make things alot easier). It takes a whole lot for me to condemn someone's parenting style.I'm pretty laid back.

I chopped all my hair off before joining the military. I used to get called Sir all the time...in or out of uniform.
As for the above post about comprimising. I don't have kids, so I'm certainly no expert...but it sort of makes me think of the whole "hand Sanitizing" thing. The more you stay away from germs and stuff, the more likely you are to get an infection because your body doesn't know how to fight it because it hasn't built up an immunity. I guess that sort of applies to everything, even raising children. Sometimes we have to let that friend, kid, parent or whoever make their stupid mistake and hopefully learn from it.

all the mohawks here are awsome! fawx and full on.
It's good to see other people with the red and black hair obsession. I have dyed mine red and black more times than i can count, be it black with the front died red (sorta like the white rouge stripe) to black with red tips, streaks or chunks. i also have dyed it the more traditional actual red hair colors and dyed the under layer black (which is my husbands favorite). right now my hair looks awful because i dyed it all black back in November and and it still hasn't faded out to the point it can be dyed over.. so i have awful roots...>.<

This reminds me of when I cut my sister's bangs... super short. I also remember putting a toy truck on my head to let it drive there for some reason. Remote control truck + hair = BAD. Mom had to cut it out of my hair which gave me a bald spot for a good while...

hehehehe, I had a similar situation when I was about 11. I tried to use a comb to curl my bangs...comb got stuck...had to be cut out....had bald spot in front of head.

I did both things... I had one of those little "Romper Stomper" (I think they were called) battery powered trucks with the real glowing headlights roll over my head and get caught in my hair.
The more embarrassing one was when I was I think 19 and I got a round brush caught in my hair ... had to have my dad pull out the bristles with pliers!
My mother cut her sister's hair (when they were little) and cut her bangs OFF. Tried to replace them with woodcurls - needless to say that didn't go unnoticed.
And yes... I can crack up about mullets all I want to. This doesn't mean that I feel others should sanctimoniously judge people by the mohawks or other do's they sport . The three contemporary mullet-wearing individuals I know are two very nice older lady lesbians and a guy in his 40's who listens to 80's metal and tanned himself into a leather catcher's mitt --he started his mullet career back when Billy Ray Cyrus was propah. I think it's a bad (yet Iconically Hilarious
) style but it doesn't make me form opinions about the people under those mudflaps. And I'm sure there's a few who rock the mullet in fine style- (like David Bowie! )
My dad likes to tell the story of I was a REALLY little kid I made an observation about dirty black feet of a young group of flower-children and my dad said, "Judging the book by the cover are we?" And I answered kid-style, "Nope. Just judging the cover."
The stuff on the outside of the head isn't as interesting or important as what's INSIDE the head!

I did that too!! Can't remember the brand of the toy truck. Thankfully, if you put the battery in backwards the wheels would go backwards. It just rolled out

I saw the whole 'remote controled car in the hair 'thing on America's Funniest Home Videos.I had no idea that so many people have tried it!They really need to put a warning on those things!
I have also had a round brush caught in my hair, resulting in a sucky haircut!Glad to see that it wasn't just me!
Heatherama,it really seems like me and you have alot in common! And,I love how you compared the whole parenting thing to hand sanitizer. That really made sence to me!
