I also wanted to know... how do the cloth pads stay in place?
I was also concerned about this, but the wings snap together underneath, and I've found they stay in place just as well, or better than disposables.
Yup I was afraid of having them slip, that was one of my big concerns as I am very much on the move all day at work and most of the time at home....they don't slip. And I also felt they stay in place better than disposables. I got the ones with wings and they snap into place.

Mandy, there are a couple ways they stay in place.
Most pads you'll find have wings, which wrap around your undies, and snap in place underneath. If you get fleece backed pads, the fleece is also "grippy" which helps them stay in place as well.
Picture here:
http://www.wildflowerdiapers.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=459&idproduct=6079
The wings can come in many different shapes and styles too. Some are simple tabs in the middle of the pad with a snap on them. Some are longer/wider, and some have more than one snap setting so you can adjust the width as desired.
Ooohhh... I was picturing them without anything and sliding all over the place. lol

I figured out the wings part but I dont wear anything that they would work with.
So do the flannel really stay in place?
Im not so comfortable about that because way back when I was young and not so wise I was out so I rolled up a washcloth and went on about my business.
The washcloth came up missing because I must have walked it out the back of my pants.
Sad thing is...to this day I still have no freakin idea where it went. Im sure someone saw the whole thing taking place and was like what the heck is that
I was traumatized for a long time after.

I just read through this whole thread for the first time and it's so fascinating. I'm totally going to research the diva cup. I looked into one like it (I don't remember what brand it was) but it had latex and since I'm pretty allergic, that was a definite no.
Someone said something about having an allergic reaction to Always...I do too, but that's because Always has latex in it.
This is an awesome thread, so much great info...I'm definitely going to do some research...

Well after reading this thread I think I am going to give the cloth pads a go. I asked my husband what he thought and he said "sure if thats what you want and if you are feeling bad I will wash some for you too" . Here was me scared it might gross him out.
I have a few questions about them. To start out with how many should I buy? My cycle is around 5 days. How soon do you change them? The same as disposables? And I am also not really sure about washing them with my clothes etc. How long can you wait to wash them? I would rather wash them all together on a seperate load to everything else.

Your husband sounds a lot more comfortable with the idea than mine did!
I just bought 4 regulars (light/med) and 2 overnights. I went through them at the same rate as I did with ultra-thin disposables. You can soak them in cool water (change the water everyday) and wait til the end to wash them all together. But since I had so few, and was going through 2-3 per day, I washed them everyday. I put them in with sheets, towels, rags, etc and everything came out clean and fresh. I'll be buying more before next month so that I don't have to wash them everyday. I don't think it'll hurt anything to wash them with regular clothes. Mine stayed stained after the first time using them though.
They were definitely clean, just stained.

Nate wasn't too tickled by the idea at first either, but ya know what? He doesn't wear them, he doesn't wash them, he doesn't get a say.
I'd say you want to have as many as you'd go through with sposies on a typical cycle. I normally just wash mine in with the regular laundry, but you can wait and wash them together as one load at the end of your cycle if you prefer.

Going to have to use my Divacup for the first time, soon, but I have a question. What brands of soap are safe to clean it? They have to be PH balanced, natural, non-fragranced soap. Ideas??? Our family currently uses Softsoap (not the anti-bacterial kind) as I'm terribly allergic to anything else.

There's a post on that live journal group about cleaning it. I forget all the different options but most don't boil it or use the special wash. Alot of talk about witch hazel for cleaning it and also tea tree oil. Check it out.

It says on the site not to use tea tree oil, it would work to clean it, but I think it would mess up the silicon. I think just a fairly mild soap would work well, they say unscented so that you aren't putting scents in your body, but Softsoap would probably be fine.

I just use whatever's in the hand soap pump thingy (usually softsoap) and rinse. Unless I'm feeling fiddly about discoloring, then I'll clean w/alcohol. Never boiled. Can't imagine hubby walking in on THAT.

For what its worth because I dont own such a thing.
Handsoap doesnt rinse off completely also the antibacterial kind has triclosan which is bad for you. If you dont believe me about hand soap wash a cup with it then drink from it
Dish soap rinses well especially if not using a concentrate. Personally if it were me I would use a natural dish soap of some sort from the health food store.
For washing the cloth things I recommend Charlies Soap its for washing clothes and just about anything maybe even the plug thingey. I am allergic to most detergents it is one that doesnt bother me at all and rinses well.

You're thinking of the Keeper cup. It's made of rubber and yes, oil would not be good for it. Tea tree oil is perfectly safe for the medical grade silicone cups.

I only bought a few to start with too. My husband wasn't bothered. I also just threw mine in the laundry with everything else and they came out clean, dunno about stained as they sent me red cloth pads
I guess I didn't make a note of which color I wanted to begin with LOL. I didn't soak them, I just threw them right into the load I was doing that day and I'm also going to be buying a few more this month.

Yeah, alternative menstrual products do cost more to start with, but you save sooooo much money in the long run! I'd look at it as an investment.

Definitely Mandy! I don't know exactly what I've spent on mine, but I know it's under $100 for sure. I'd guess around $70, I think. And these will last me for years.

Yes, I know, and then I won't have that lovely blistering rash from the pads - but 20 will last me 2 days and I need 6 more days worth. I wish I could sew.
But I'm just going to order me 20 (maybe 30) of the jumbo maximum hold pads and get more later. I think darker colors are best?

No, I'm talking about the Diva Cup. It says on the Diva Cup website not to use tea tree oil.

Hmm. Well there are several people on the livejournal group that use the tea tree oil on their silicone cups for years with no issues. Whatever works I suppose.

I think the Diva Cup website says most things are harmful, because they want you to buy their wash.
I'd go for real experiences over what the website says in this case!
