Ok I just got a pretty Tiel.  I got him from a breeder and his wings were clipped BEFORE I got him.

I do not know if they are clipped TOO Short or were clipped too young.  But the only way that he can fly is BACKWARDS!

Is there any hope for him?  I was planning to let them grow back out.  any other thoughts.  My poor baby.

I must have this thing for getting the "strange bird...." He was handfeed and every now and then he wants to be HANDFEED his food.  To make matters worse he gets mad if you feed him the wrong thing... (He is currently on a seed/pellet/ceral mix) and will throw the offending food at you.  Weird bird.

I had two 'tiels for a while, never had any experience with flying backwards, but it seems to be normal to me. not quite sure, maybe give your vet a call.

Good Luck!

I'd let the feathers grow back out, and when the time comes to clip them again, maybe take your bird to your vet so he can show you how to do it the best way and ask him about the flying backwards... i have a tiel too, but heh, i haven't ever seen him fly backwards... wow.  sounds like you have quite the character there Smiley they are wonderful birds.

Don't feed him with your hand! Otherwise, you'll be doing it the rest of his life. You need to just let him eat on his own.. he won't starve himself. But if he does start pooping only liquid, you can hand feed him a little. My breeder has already told me that, when we got out new girlie, she would cry and cry until we gave her food from our hands... but I was told not to because of those reasons.

No ideas about the flying backwards thing though.. goodluck.  Roll Eyes I figure, as long as they aren't hurting themselves, it shouldn't matter.  My Quinn flys up and left and back a little when his wings are clipped too.. if that's what you mean, then it's fine. They're just getting used to the clipping.. when they grow back more, he'll fly normal.  Blue Dumbo Smile

(Hopefully not into your kitchen where you can't see him [with 3 cats around  ] like my boy. Silly birdie. I loves him.  Grin )

We have a Red Bellied parrot at work who has this problem!  I think it's because the person who was clipping her got bitten and cut off too many feathers. (I could be wrong though)  She's learned not to try and fly off, and she's doing fine! ^_^
