Ratties r cool

« on: October 05, 2007, 08:01:17 AM »

Hi Im thinking of adopting this stray cat. have a couple questions. Shes friendly. I called the vet yesterdaY about it. My friend says she was dropped off at his friends house in the country last year because she was pregnant. Thats what he thinks. Cause before that there was no cats on the property . Then all of a sudden theres this pregnant female cat roaming around.  What all should I do before I take her in?

The vet on the phone said keep her in the garage temporarly. But we have a shed.
Shes a friendly kitty but a little skiddish/shy.

You can take her now if you like...  do you have any other cats?  Just make sure to keep them seperated until you get kitty to a vet to be tested and such.

If she isn't far along in her pregnancy, you can go ahead and have her spayed too...  if you wanted.

No shes been out there for about a year. Shes already had the kittins and they all ran away now.
But Id like to give her a home. Or keep her temporary until I find her a loving home. I already have one cat.

The problem with this cat that im worried about is that she drools spit a little bit. I wanted to be sure it wasent rabies or anything. So I called the vet yesterday about it. I told him she wasent visious or anything that she was a friendly cat and overall healthy looking. And my friend said shes been drooling spit sense 12 months ago. And the vet said if she had rabies she would be dead by now. He said it can be caused by other things too like teeth. And other illnesses.

Take kitty to a vet for a checkup.  We can't tell ya if anything is wrong with it here.

Adopting any stray animal can be very rewarding.

I would say that if she is an unspayed female and is living outdoors your chances of her not being pregnant again are pretty slim to none.

But that aside.

Bring her home and set her up either in your house (basement, spare room, etc) or garage, which ever makes you happy.  You might want to put her in a cage with a litter pan, a bed, and her food/water to get the idea of a litter pan across, though it is usually not any trouble.

Then get her to the vet ASAP.

There is no way she could have rabies for a year and be alive.  So most likely she has a tooth issue or such.  When they have her under to spay her they can fix her teeth too.

Good luck.

Be sure to get her flea treatment, dewormed, and tested for Feline Leukemia/Aids before bringing her inside if you have other cats.  Most flea treatments take about a day to kill all the fleas, so I'd apply the treatment and give her a bath before letting her loose.  You don't want flea eggs strewn through your house.  If you get Frontline or Advantage or Revolution, they'll kill all stages, from eggs to adults.  Revolution is good for some kinds of worms, but i'd get a dewormer pill to cover all your bases.

My cat Bagheera always drools when we're petting him.  It's just what he does.

I went ahead and grabbed the cat from my friends. and I think she is pregnant again.... I dont believe in getting her spayed while she is preg cause that would kill the babies. When you touch her stomach she gets moody and growl. Her stomach looks big for a cat outside with eating just whatever she can find. Her sides are buldging a little also. Here are some pictures of her:

Awww...  she really looks like a sweety!  In my experience, all calicos/torties I've met have been absolute dolls.

That's great that you took her in!  She's pretty far along in her pregnancy, then?  My parents had their dog spayed while she was pregnant, but this was only a few days after a neighborhood male dog got a hold of her.  *sigh*  She was going to be taken in to be spayed anyway, but this spurred them on to get it over with.
