Isolde & Maddox!

« on: July 02, 2008, 09:32:02 PM »

I bought one yesterday, so excited that I would only have to carry around this tiny little thing that played all my favorite music.  All I can say now is what a pain!  I spent 2.5 hours last night downloading music and charging it.  This morning it is flashing that I have no music on it and it has never once said it was fully charged.  The tech support is only open the time I was at work today.  I have never had this many problems with electronics...

I love my shuffle! What exactly did you do to download the music? Did you see the message "iPod syncing complete" before you unplugged the device after adding you music to your iPod playlist? What color light have you seen on the body?

I love mine too, but I remember when I first got it, I thought I had put my music on it only to also find it hadn't worked...sheesh, I can't remember exactly what it was, but I think Mandy's suggestions/questions are good ones.  It ended up not being anything serious; I have the big video iPod too, and I think I was puzzled by the simplicity of the Shuffle, as silly as that sounds.  Now that I've figured it out, I LOVE it.  (The only down side was trying to pare down my huge iTunes catalog to just 300 songs!  THAT took me a long time to accomplish!  )

I got one of these for work recently too!  My problem~I've purchased songs and they won't sync.  I get a message saying I'm not authorized to download them (or something like that).  WHAT?!?!  I PAID for them, I did choose the explicit over the clean lyrics, but I'm more than twice the age of 18, I only ever connected this iPod to my one computer~so why won't they download?  I'm afraid to buy any more songs!!!!!

Anyone have any guesses for me?  I'm still trying to find the tech support email or phone number...

(Sorry fearlessella~hi-jacked your thread a little....)

I used Windows Media Player to download the music.  When I plug it back into the computer it comes up with all the files (my songs) on it.  I don't get it.  No it never said the "syncing complete" thing.  I tried last night after writing this email to download the iTunes thing online.  Their phone service said it would take about 10 minutes.  It was still downloading 2 hours later (I fell asleep waiting for it).  I don't know whats wrong..  Hooked to the computer it is flashing with an orange light which I guess means not to remove it from the computer.  It has been like that for 2 days.  WMP recognized my iPod though.  That is what I don't get.  Their phone support doesn't start for another 2 hours and I need to leave before that.

Wow, I just bought one of these off Ebay and it should be here in a new days. I hope I don't have problems with it, too.  Sad

I used to have a Nano, but I sold it to fund buying a bigger cage for some boys I took in. I just want something for while I'm mowing the lawn, I didn't need the bigger one.

Do you have to use iTunes to put the music on it? I know I always used iTunes with my Nano, so I'm assuming the Shuffle only works with iTunes too. Am I wrong? Don't  you *have* to use iTunes to put music on any of the iPod products?  Huh

I finally got a real person!  Because I have dial up I cannot download iTunes.  I told her it took 2 hours to download and it still was not done.  She said it may never work.  I didn't know that you had to have iTunes.  She said I could go to the apple store and they would burn a cd of it for me, but the nearest store to me is over 1 hour away.  What a pain!  Is an MP3 player any better?

You could check on ordering the software disc from ITunes website. Or do you know anyone that could download and burn a copy of ITunes software for you?

My MP3 player is essentially a bigger USB drive with a headphone jack.  Drag and drop is a wonderful thing.  Wink  This is why I don't really like the iPod.  Of course, I have the same problem with any technology that forces you to use their software.  *shrug*

MP3 players just let you drap and drop. Hence why  i have not gotten an IPod and don't plan on it. I do not use Itunes that often and don't like it, at all.

Windows media player can only see the ipod as a hard disk.  When you put songs on it it goes into hidden files on your ipod (pretty much data files).  There are ways to get music off of WMP and onto your ipod successfully but it takes some fiddling around, and you'll have to download random programs.  I'm not the type that likes to do that but if you want to try it's up to you.

I found this website http://www.askdavetaylor.com/converting_wma_to_mp3_for_ipod.html

It's too bad that you can't download itunes because itunes automatically converts music to play on the ipod.

And I want to say, don't be afraid of itunes!  I actually find itunes WAY easier to use then WMP.  And if you have a little bit of computer sense it is drag and drop.

I agree with that, but only when the forced software is bad  Yellow Cute Laugh

I've never had a problem, sure it's one extra step that takes me 2 seconds.

So get the MP3?  I will take it back ASAP if you tell me it is faster.  I called Apple back tonight and asked if they could mail me a copy of iTunes (I told them I would pay too!).  They said they couldn't....  He said there is a place about 30 min from me (I visit this city often), but he couldn't guarantee they could help me.  I think the iPod goes back!  Good thing I have 90 days!

Yeah, mine is a little 20 dollar player I got from Amazon.  Just drag and drop your existing MP3's.  It doesn't require syncing (although it can and will if you have other formats of music).

My husband runs Ubuntu and has a 5th gen ipod.  no itunes on Ubuntu!

That was my point.  There's not, yet he can still use his ipod because you don't *have* to use itunes with it.  I thought that WAS part of the topic.  My mistake never mind.

I've used itunes for my ipod nano, there very well could be a way to use it without it though.  It's the only thing I use itunes for, however,..don't purchase music there, or use it to play my music (I use windows media for that)

Wow, I never knew people have so much trouble with iPods, but I have a Mac, which (obviously) makes it extremely easy.  And it bears repeating that you do not have to use iTunes to put music on your iPod...there are many other ways/sources!  Before I got my first iPod, I bought some other cheaper mp3 player, and it was SO DIFFICULT to use...I'm sure there are better ones now, but I love my iPods.  Good luck and I hope you find something that works well for you and that you like!  Smiley

I have NEVER had a problem with my ipod even before I got a mac.  I even have the old clunky original color screened ipod (okay I forget the generation but it was the one before video)
Like I said in my post there are ways to put music on your ipod without using itunes.  You just have to use a different program to convert the files so they are mp3.
Also I don't know why so many people think that itunes isn't drag and drop.  You DONT have to sync with your media library.  It's good when you first get one so you can put the music on all at once but after that it doesn't matter.  All you have to do is open your file that has the music then drag and drop it into itunes or onto the ipod.  It's the same as pretty much every other mp3 player there is.

I don't know about the mp3 players, but I posted asking for help about my shuffle not syncing and I finally figured out myself that if I 'reauthorized' my computer, it would download/sync the songs to it.  Stupid huh?  It would only sync some of the songs, not all.

Not sure if the mp3 players work in the same way~just thought I'd throw that out there since you've not gotten any responces yet!  Frustrating isn't it?  We ask for so little, don't we?  Just a little music...that's all we want...just a little music!

I think I FINALLY found one that works.  I have been downloading almost without issues.  I tried listening to it and as far as I can tell all the songs are working fine.  My only fear is the tiny caution print that was in the inside of the package when I opened the flap.  I had to laugh when I read it:

California Proposition 65 Statement
WARNING: Handling this product may expose you to chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.  Wash hands after handling.

What kind of warning is that?  It is a piece of plastic!!  Forgot to add that it is a Zen Stone.  It was cheaper to get the pink one.
