Hi everyone! I'm Nikki from NC. I have two daughters (ages 9 and 10). Our pets include:
Cricket (sheltie...age 10)
Boris (rescued retired racing greyhound...age 12)
Mandy (rescued Eskimo Spitz/Cocker Spaniel mix...age 18)
Caramel (1 1/2 year old gerbil)
2 Bantam Hens
2 African Dwarf Frogs
And now we have two baby male rats! I have never had rats and did some research before getting them.
I have two questions that are really bothering me right now though.
First of all, I read an aquarium would be fine as long as there was proper ventilation and an aquarium topper (to make it two or three stories tall). We are picking up a 75 gallon reptile aquarium tomorrow (DH's brother is giving it to us for FREE) and we were going to build an aquarium topper on it so they would have the added flooring (I know...no wire mesh flooring...we will not have wire flooring). Will this not work now?

Also, the boys (btw...they have been named Max and Timmy) have been sneezing and sound "sniffly" when they are being handled. We're using the regular Carefresh bedding. They weren't doing this until we got them home. We have them in a small 10 gallon aquarium for the evening until we get the large aquarium and put the topper on. I've got fabrid and all to make hammocks.
Their current food is Nutro Max dog food (it's what one of the rescue groups uses) mixed with rabbit pellets. I've tried to give them a few treats today (dog biscuit and Rice Krispies), but they're not really interested. They seem to be very tired. Is that normal?
I'm sure I'll have a million other questions, but thought I'd start with these few. Thanks!
I don't want to ruffle feathers here or anything but 75 gallon tanks are HUGE, that plus a large topper plus cleaning out the bottom frequently(daily) shouldn't pose such a huge risk IMO... It's not like a narrow 20 gallon with a board or something across the top(to use an extreme example that I hope no one ever does!)that'll get stinky quick. With a wire topper that goes well above the top of the tank to give access to fresh air how is the tank as a bottom any different than large nest box? Yes rats like to use their noses and wire gives a better access to talk to and pet but with the tank/cage combo it seems like the best of both worlds - a draft free place for the babies and access to fresh air.
My limited expierence is that baby rats, or any new rats really spend the first 3 days to week doing nothing but eating, drinking, sleeping, and pooing. Then they come around.
