I need to stay off of craiglist! I saw a listing for a great Pyrenees/golden retriever mix. I had been thinking about someday getting a pyrenees, just not now. Well, the ad broke my heart. It said they had taken the dog to a shelter, but were told she would be euthanized since she was so unsocialized. The people brought her home, but were going to have her put down if she didn't find a home soon. They said she was terrified of everyone. It seems her original home was abusive. She was then passed from person to person, none of whom took the time to work with her. The guy who had her said he kept her tied to a tree outside all day. He said nobody could get near her. He told me she broke loose on several occasions and he'd chase her down, yelling at her. This guy wrote me daily emails telling me how "stupid" and "unmanageable" she was. I made him get her tested for heartworm. She is positive, as I expected.

I have had her a week and she is doing well. She knows her name (Darla) how to walk on a leash, sit, down, and come. She learned all of that witihin a few days. She acts like a normal dog around me. If anyone else approaches she freezes and looks away. She is doing better, though. She went hiking with me and my parents today and actually relaxed after awhile. She loves my other dog, they are good for each other. I am really nervous about the heartworm treatment. I am told that since she is so young she should do well.

I saw that ad and I was so angry.  I am so glad you adopted her!!!  Since she's so young, I have every faith that the wonderful loving care you will give her will bring her around.  She's a beauty, and lucky to have found a home with you.  I definitely want to hear updates.

She is so gorgeous! The unsocial behavior might not completely be from her history. GPs are solitary sheep guarders and are naturally wary of strangers. This behavior was probably magnified by her previous homes but what what I've been told, it's just the breed's character. I wouldn't worry if she doesn't become a social butterfly.
