"Its not always rainbows and butterflies"

WWW
« on: July 01, 2008, 06:31:10 PM »

Multi-topic post, and I didn't know quite what to title it. "The Plan" has a nice ring to it.  Yellow Cute Laugh

First off, I have 2 boy ratties, Jasper and Jynx. They are both around 9 months old and living in a FN 142..

We are leaving for vacation on Sunday (yay!) and leaving the pets in a variety of places.. Ratties and Pigs are going to a boarding place. Dogs and Bird are staying put and being cared for by a family friend. Jasper and Jynx are going to be in a much smaller cage ( Sad ) but still large enough according to the cage calculator. We will be back on the following Sunday.

Then, on July 20th we are going to pick up 2 new rattie boys!  Blue Dumbo Smile They have been with the person for over two months and have no health problems. Although I might get yelled at, I am not planning on doing a q-tine. I am going to have 1 1/2 of the FN set up for them and Jasper and Jynx in the other part. Ill do a change out everyday.. Switching their areas so they get used to the smell. Then I will do intros in a neutral area (bath).

Sometime after we get back I will also be adopting another boy from the HRR. He is already being q-tined there so I can intro him right away as well..

The piggers go off to their new homes on the 25th so that will leave the double 142 unoccupied. I plan to move all the boys, once introed, into the double double FN and use the regular 142 for my cockatiel, Peaches.

So.. List Time..

To Do:
-Clean out ratties vacation cage
-Put together pigs vacation cage
-Pack (Ive yet to even start  Roll Eyes )
-Buy hairties and a brush
-Take Jypsy (dog) to the vet Th
-Take rats/pigs to the boarding place
-Clean ALL cages out once they are there
-Go on/get back from vacation
-Bolt together or zip tie double FN
-Get dumbo boys
-Get berk boy
-Intro everyone
-Take pigs to their new home
-Un-mod regular FN and make into birds cage
-Move ratties to the double FN
-Take Jypsy back to the vet for xrays

I think thats everything. Im tired just looking at that list.   Shocked

So.. I have some questions too.. lol

Anyone see flaws in my plan? Im hoping everyone will get along and yada yada but I have enough cages to be able to separate if not.

Do you think I should Intro all 5 boys (3 groups) at once?

Any good cage decoration/toy suggestions? Im going to have a ball making it a rat-mansion!

WOW you are one busy rat parent!! My boys get cheap toys/hidies, like ramen noodle boxes, ( great because they are cheap, and they love to tear them up!) plus.. well, its rather like recycling, rat style;psoda boxes are great because  lots of ratties can fit in there. I have 10 rats, 8 in one cage, two in another, and most important to having a happy group of rats is lots of hidey places so they can get away from eachother if need be

Well, I am about 1/2 the way done now.  Tongue

I took everyone to the boarding place and have to run and clean out all the cages now. Fun fun. Im trying to decide if I want to just wash everything and then put the bedding back or leave it empty and do it when I get home..  Huh

-Put together pigs vacation cage
-Pack (Ive yet to even start   )
-Buy hairties and a brush
-Take Jypsy (dog) to the vet Th
-Take rats/pigs to the boarding place
-Clean ALL cages out once they are there
-Go on/get back from vacation

Still to do (in order):
-Finish making the bin/bird cage for the PEW boy, just in case.

-Zip tie double FN together
-Clean Jasper and Jynx's cage (Friday)

yay for new ratties ^_^ So much to do!  So the piggie cage is getting taken apart already?

I'm genuinely not trying to criticize, i'm jsut a little concerned, are you altering the spacing on the 142 for the cockateil in any way?  If you aren't, it's really not safe for a cockateil to be able to stick its head through the bars, they can get seriously injured that way...birds seem to find creative ways of hurting themselves!  If you leave it modded it should be good.  Lots of room for playing!

Nope, the pigs are still in their cage.

I get the ratties on Sunday. Jasper and Jynx will be in 1/2 of the FN 142; Magic and Maslyn will be in the other 1/2. I am working on getting the temp. cage set up for Karma (PEW boy) and I have another temp. cage for Lyric when he arrives.

Peaches, my cockatiel, is actually in a cage with 1in bars right now. I haven't had any problems with him sticking his head through the bars.. I might leave the mesh in place for a while, but I really hate the look of it so it will probably get taken off in the future. Not 100% sure yet.

Oh, I must have misunderstood about the piggies.

With cockatiels anything over 5/8th of an inch is considered dangerous.  It only takes once with him sticking his head through and then spasming from either suprise, panic or even seizures (mine had them later in life, they're very common in 'tiels) to break his neck, even if it's only the first time or the hundreth time he stuck it through.  It's considered inappropriate housing in the bird world.  I normally don't criticize but that's a major safety issue in a cage, you should strongly consider a new one....now that I think of it if the mesh has any zinc in it, that would be just as bad...birds are always in danger it seems!

Not having accidents now doesn't mean it's safe, just as all of the people who kept their rats on cedar without problems doesn't make it okay.

Good to know. Ill keep the mesh on. Unfortunatly, I can't get him an entirely new cage, he is technically my grandmothers cockatiel (hates me for some unknown reason) and therefore she makes all the desisions regarding his diet/cage/etc..

I would really like other cockatiel advice, if you have any to give. I found his current cage to be too small and convinced her to change it. I also got her to change his food to something without equo, but I really don't know if it is 'good' or not. He wont eat veggies/fruits or play with toys, stubborn little bugger.

ETA: Whats bad with the zinc? Ill check the brand of mesh I got to see if it contains any.

ETA2: Just read an article on zinc poisoning. I can't seem to find out if the mesh contains zinc or not. Gah. What would be worse, leave the mesh on, or take it off? I guess I could leave him in his current cage, but it has 1" bar spacing also.

ETA3: This is his current cage:

 Blue Dumbo Smile

I'll be bringing the temporary cage with me so they can be a bit more comfy on the way home. I'm so so so excited. We are actually leaving really early in the morning so my grandparents can go up to church up there and then we can eat at Sams. So if you are there, and you don't see up- we will be inside eating! lol  Wink

Alright, I'm home! Smiley

I cleaned the double wide FN and am almost done decorating.. Well.. With the things I have right now.. I need to buy a bunch more stuff to put in it. Plus, I need a TON more hammock hooks. I also want to order a bunch of bins to store stuff in, under the cage. Just sticking it under looks tacky and is a pain to get to. I found a pack of them online, in the right sizes.. (!)

No pics of the cage yet.. sorry sorry sorry. I know I'll get a ton once I finish in the morning, before the rats go in, and then after.

I am planning on introducing everyone tomorrow, and dosing them all with revolution. I'm hoping everyone will get along.. If not, I'll just separate them until I can try again (next weekend)..

Oh, and update about the birds future cage.. I traded 1/3 of my FNs for a FF and am planning on using that for him. It has 1/2" bar spacings, I hope he will like it. Smiley

Alright, the boys are dosed with Revolution and into their new cage (DDFN). I decided not to intro until I get the 5th boy.

Only 4 things left on the list  Hyper I am almost finished with one, cleaning out the vacation cages. I bought 8 bins today to put under and on top of the cage. It looks a whole lot better than everything just stacked up and messy looking! Pics are coming soon!
