err hi. i'm new to the pocket pets forum here, though i post on occasion in the rat section Cheesy i'm shazza. i know there's already another shaz here so hopefully we won't get confused too easily! this shazza here is 17, lives in houston and is an avid fan of all things furry, scaly, slimy, feathered or otherwise.

i've had rats for over a year now (and the best year of my life i assure you!) but never any other kind of small animal. it was a job enough getting my dad to let in to my two boys :C

anyway. this past monday, september 22, my boyfriend gives me a call. apparently his best friend and another guy went to petshop and bought a mouse. why?

oh, so they could watch their tarantula attack it. yeah.

one of the guys (the best friend,) has about 5 tarantulas of different varieties that he treats like his children. and he's such a sweet and amazing person i'd never think he'd do something of this nature. but yet he did. the particular spider they chose the mouse for was actually the WRONG breed completely to even desire to eat mice. and for those who don't know, those few tarantulas that eat mice generally eat pinkies, not older mice.

well anyway. mice being the curious gits they are, it naturally run up the spider and sniffed it. the spider, being slightly irritated, poked at the mouse, which run. then of course it came back, and the spider lunged and almost got a bite on the mouse, but the mouse wriggled free just in time. she then proceeded to bury herself in the spider's substrate. the boys started provoking the spider to anger in hopes it would attack the mouse, but by this time the spider was too pissed to care. lucky for the mouse.

by this time my boyfriend had called me and i flipped. after like yelling at him for 10 minutes to get the mouse away from them, he finally asked the two boys if he could have it. they weren't ready to give it up just yet, and phil finally had to change the subject to keep me from running the hour and a half drive and forcefully taking the mouse away.

by the end of the night, the boys were done tormenting the poor creature and phil took it from them. i sent him an email with some basic care instructions and what kind of cage to buy it temporarily until saturday, when he was coming visit and could bring the mouse to me. at first my dad (who is not a fan of small and furry things, and therefore believes i shouldn't be either -eyeroll-) gave me some trouble but eventually gave in. and, as planned, i received her today, september 27. i have only had one other female pet, a lovebird in a pair, so i was completely at a loss for names. i had suggested Emma to phil (the name of a friend's robo ham that had launched herself off my hand first time i held her, and the mouse had done the same to phil so it reminded me of the ham,) and he immediatly decided that would be her name. we went buy a new lid for a 10g tank i already had (which will last until i can buy a proper topper with ladders or a decent wire cage,) and other amenities such as a wheel and water bottle. she's now snug (and safe!) in her new home.

she's not hand-tame at all, and understandably still scared silly from being moved around so much. once she's calmed down some i'll start trying to tame her. i have a feeling she'll be a sweetheart someday :3

but enough talk. i know you all want pictures! so i bear some. i didn't want to bugger her too much flashing lights in her eyes and sticking macro lenses up to her so it's only a couple. I'm curious as to what colour she is...at first I was guessing Chinchilla but it's not right. It's some kind of agouti, but blue with brown ticking. very strange. hopefully someone can figure it out. i'm stumped!

slightly overexposed but good showing of her coat colour. she was NOT happy about me moving her igloo lol x3

zoomed in coat, snapped from the above picture but kept at original size. see how it's like blue with brown ticking? weird

and her sweet fluffy face <3

THAT WHEEL IS LIKE HUGE COMPARED TO HER AHHAHA. it's 6.5" so its the right size but omg. she's so tiny! i hope she grows into it ahha

i'm so happy n____n my furry family keeps growing and growing! i hope to get her a friend as soon as my local rescue gets some meece :3 i learned my lesson in petshop animals with my rats.

Poor thing! That is absolutely horrible what those guys did to her! I am glad she is out of that situation!!

(Her color is agouti, if you didn't know..not sure if you did or not).

She is beautiful!

Female rats are very social, so it would be cool if you could get her a friend! Smiley

That's not a domestic mouse...it's a natal rat.  She'll need at least 2 more friends to keep her company (double check to make sure it's female.)  A 10 gallon with screen top is actually fine for her for now, but a 20 gal. long would be great for 3 girls.

Here's some info on them:

I beg to differ guys. That mouse has the coloring of a natal, but that is a mouse. The eyes are too small and the nose too roman to be a natal. She's a broken agouti angora (which explains the crazy undercoat color). It's just your basic agouti- but doesn't it look so much prettier with the extra fuzzy coat? Smiley

the angle of her face in the first picture and the way the fluff on her nose does makes her look somewhat like a natal rat or soft-fur, but she is quite a mouse :3 i checked up on it.

i'm currently trying to find/persuade my parents into a companion. i know i can get one i just need to find a rescue or something that has some. i dont particularly want to deal with another unsocialized petshop mouse >.o

plus i think she's pregnant :/ i have done my research, no worries Grin i have a friend who runs a small animal rescue in my area that is willing to help me out homing babies and giving advice/tips if i need any.

thanks for the help with the colouring! i kept getting confused with so many different shades of agouti, then this "blue agouti" i've seen on a few sites. bleh! ahhaha
