Title: The Snuggles Project (Repost)
Post by: Suebee on May 16, 2005, 08:08:22 AM
Hey, since the original post was lost, I thought I would repost info about The Snuggles Project.

http://www.h4ha.org/snuggles/

Recap: The Snuggles Project is a program for animal shelters to accept donations of blankets for the animals in their shelter. They can be crocheted, knitted, sewn or quilted. Heck, you could even make them out of fleece, which doesn't even require any sewing!

General size guidelines (don't have to be exact):
14" x 14" for cats and small animals
24" x 24" for cats and small to medium dogs
36" x 36" for medium to large dogs

The site offers a list of participating shelters and also patterns!

I'm currently using up my yarn stash, and am working on my 4th snuggle. I'm hoping this thread can stay active as we keep each other posted on what we're donating. I think it's a great group project for our community! We have ao many talented people here with caring hearts. :D

I think I am working on #5 right now... I've lost count! LOL!

I also have one in progress at work. I try to demonstrate something at least once a week, and the last few times it has been crocheting... so I decided to work on one there, and get paid for it. LOL!

Once I have enough for a washer load (since they request they be washed before donating), I'll take pictures and post them. :)

I wish I had a decent sewing machine. I've got some old clothes that could be turned into a couple snuggles - as it is, I guess they'll just keep me in new rattie hammocks for the next year! :)

I'll have to start on some when I get home... I need to find the shelter list though!  I have a lot of spare fabric and yarn around the house that needs used before I move.

What a fantastic idea!  My cat Snuggles will help me sew these I'm sure (of course she thinks she is helping by lying on whatever I'm trying to do!)
I don't sew well but for this cause I will learn!

This sounds so cool ^^ I know how to crochet, knit and quilt but I can also sew fleece and cotton mixes into pillow cases. =D The pillows can be so cozy for some young cats or small ones out there I cant wait till I get the money to buy some stuff !.. Ideas though..... Does anyone have a cat pattern for quilts?

Welcome!

I actually work at a Jo-Ann's, so I heartily support your shopping endeavor! LOL!

Pickin's are probably slim by now, but there may be some clearance yarn floating around, so you can save even more money. Otherwise, good ol' Red Heart Super Saver will do the job! ;D

If you're planning on making something other than what The Snuggle Project is recommending on their site, you may want to contact the shelter where you are planning to donate them directly. They may have limited washing capability. :)

School starts in a week.  I am going to talk to the Home Ec (oops! The polically correct term is Family and Consumer Sciences) teacher and see if her classes can make some out of fleece and we can donate them to the shelter that is near our school.

Just wanted to let people know that I am going to be putting my Snuggle Project efforts on hold so I can focus on making afghans for victims of Katrina. I know that what they need right now is food and water, and that monetary donations are what everyone is recommending, but it takes time to make afghans, and it even gets cool down South in the winter.

This is not a disaster that's going to be quick to clean up... people are going to need our help for months and months -- if not years -- while the Gulf Coast rebuilds. I'd personally like to have a few afghans and some of my old (but gently used) clothes gathered to help people in the long-term, too.

Edit: After reading my crochet forum, I also realized that people are going to need practical items, so I will also be making washcloths out of cotton.

If anybody from PA is making blankets, It'd be cool if some made there way to the Luzerne county ASPCA, we're on the list!! :cheeky:
Also I think it's awesome you all are doing that, and Suebee that's wonderfull that you are helping the Katrina victims. I know they ask for money and what not, but sometimes it's the little things that count. I know if I was a victim of something like that and someone had handmade an afghan for me I would feel wonderfull. I'm sure you will be putting a smile on many faces!

ooh! My local chelter is on there.  I'm pretty good at crocheting, and have a lot of extra yarn just sitting around.. I should make some up for the shelter.  Might even go out and by more, just for this. I've been trying to find a reason to start crocheting again. ;D

By the way Suebee, those all are very beautiful!  You're going to make a lot of pets very happy!  And what you're doing for the katrina victims is wounderful.

My Katrina efforts got a little hampered, but I did get a couple blankets done... I feel kinda guilty I couldn't get more done. *sigh*

I dropped off my snuggles two weekends ago, and received a very nce thank you letter from Lollypop Farm (my local humane society) yesterday. ;D

Right now I am working on scarves for The Red Scarf Project. http://www.orphan.org/

I have sent 8 scarves already, and am finishing up the 6th of a second batch today, to be mailed tomorrow. Monday is the shipping deadline, and I'm just going to make it. Heh. They do it every year, though, so I am going to continue to make scarves between the Snuggles, and collect them for next year. :)

OMG a friend of mine just gave me a BOATLOAD of yarn that she wasn't using. You know those plastic bags that comforters come in? TWO of them, packed FULL! The smaller of the two had a sticker on it that said "TWIN." The other must be a queen size. Cripes.

I should have taken pictures of it all, still in the bags, before I sorted it... LOL!

Anyway, my point is, I now have even MORE yarn to make snuggles with! WOO! I'm also going to use some of it for other things (I participate in a charity scarf project every year, too, called the Red Scarf Project (http://www.orphan.org/redscarf.htm), and I am going to make potholders and stuff out of the cotton -- some as a "placeholder" wedding gift until I can get color information from the bride to make an afghan. ;)

Since not all the yarn is going to be used for charity, I am going to give her some money, even though that was not the original deal. There's just too much yarn for me to NOT give her something for it -- and there are quantities of some yarns that are enough to accomplish something large, like an afghan! Jebus! LOL!  :shocked2:

Got my work cut out for me! LOL!

The Snuggles project sounds like so much fun! I used to crochet a while ago but I never actually completed anything, lack of inspiration I supose, but this project makes me want to get back to it and finish!

I'd love to get a boatload of yarn, I'm over here with all this inspiration to get crocheting, and I'm yarnless! Hopefully that'll change within the next few days!

Suebee those snuggles you made, are addorable, I only know how to do one type of crocheting...I never learned anything else, but I'm dying to learn more variations and practice them while making my snuggles.  Also, Suebee, where do you learn about all these charities?  I'd love donating while being creative at the same time, its the perfect thing for me!

Nice! ;D

I just contacted my local Humane Society the other day, and asked them which blanket sizes they use most, so I could be sure to make ones they need most. In addition to the sizes listed on The Snuggle Project (14 x 14, 24 x 24, 36 x 36), they also said that 14" x 24" would be useful to them. :)

And as long as fleece/no tie blankets are ok, I'm in :-).

By the way, my son who just turned 5 wants to learn how to crochet! I have to figure it out so I can teach him! I used to know how...

This sounds like a great organization! I don't know how to do any of that, though. I suppose I could make fleece ones and just sew the edges, but I'd prefer to knit/crochet. How could I learn to Crochet or knit? My aunt knows how to knit, but being a guy, that would be kind of weird asking my aunt how to knit, haha. So is there like a book of some type that could teach me?

There are LOTS of books out there. Literally hundreds, plus DVDs, etc. Most craft stores, continuing education programs, and recreation departments also offer classes. For example, I teach crochet at the Jo-Ann's where I work. ;) But I actually learned from a book!

I recommend "I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting" (http://www.amazon.com/Cant-Believe-Im-Crocheting-Updated/dp/1601400896/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195656940&sr=8-1) or "I Can't Believe I'm Knitting." (http://www.amazon.com/Cant-Believe-Im-Knitting-Updated/dp/1601400993/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195657112&sr=8-1)

(ooh they updated them... good. The projects were soooo '80s. LOL)

Online Crochet resources:

Online Knitting resources:

There's lots more out there, but these sites are both very reliable. ;D

You could make 12" x 12" squares for practice, and donate those. ;D

You're right, I've never thought of that, so it doesn't really matter what they look like, eh?

And also, I found this great video online where this excellent lady teaches you how to knit!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzz5QR0HG0E is where the videos is. Theres two of them, and they're VERY helpful. I'm going to go get the supplies as soon as I can, and start up! I'll just be a "closet Knitter", being a boy, it would be kinda embarrassing if people outside of my family, and even some people inside of my family knew I knit.

A friend of mine is recuperating from CPT surgery, and before he flexes his wrist and arm, he spends 20 minutes crocheting. You take the form and the blankets to your local animal shelter. It's a national program that promotes local action. :)
