Title: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Pumpkinseed on June 23, 2008, 01:14:09 AM http://www.etonline.com/news/2008/06/62841/index.html
:( :( :( Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Lilija on June 23, 2008, 01:18:27 AM Oh my goodness, I just cried a little bit. The world is a little darker now, and a lot less funny. I loved his humor, he was so hysterically funny, crass, realistic, snarky, but most importantly he was intelligent, and he made people think. Damn. Double damn. :(

I seriously WTFd when i saw that link.. Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: strangeduck on June 23, 2008, 01:53:11 AM My heart sunk when I saw the headline on Yahoo. It was inevitable as he wasn't exactly young, but still...I second Lillja's statement that the world is a little darker and a lot less funny. Many people may see the same ridiculousness he saw, but not many have the courage to comment on it.

I told my mom and dad, who already had tickets to one of his shows in San Diego. Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: julztoni97 on June 23, 2008, 06:01:01 AM I was shocked when I turned on the computer and saw that he had passed. :'( He was my all time favorite comic! He will be missed!
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: NutKitty on June 23, 2008, 07:25:08 AM My home page is set to yahoo, so that's the first thing I saw when I logged on this morning. Kind of like a punch in the face. :/
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Suebee on June 23, 2008, 08:17:05 AM I was still sleeping when I heard the news, and actually reacted to it within my dream.
(my husband turns the TV on in the bedroom when he gets out of the shower, and I slowly wake up to the sound) This is really, really sad. :( Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: MaevePotter on June 23, 2008, 08:46:20 AM I was so sad when I saw this. Normally celebrity deaths don't hit me like that, but George always felt like part of the family. He has been my all time favorite comedian since I was a young teen. He was so smart, and just such a cool guy. I literally gasped aloud when I saw the news headline on yahoo.. :( He was too young to go...
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Kendra on June 23, 2008, 10:36:12 AM I just saw this, too. He was such a brilliant person. :'(
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Marybelle on June 23, 2008, 12:28:23 PM Yup, Yahoo is my homepage, too, so it was the first thing I saw when I logged on this morning. It's so very sad. He was such an icon, and had such an incredible way with words. The world is a little bit sadder for his passing, that's for sure.
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: jeannerat on June 23, 2008, 12:50:47 PM He was so funny and intelligent, and too young to go (seventy is young nowadays). I'll miss him. :'(

I loved his humor, he was so hysterically funny, crass, realistic, snarky, but most importantly he was intelligent, and he made people think. Damn. Double damn. :( My exact thoughts. You said it perfectly. RIP George. You've left MANY fans, and will always be missed. :'( Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: tonivan on June 23, 2008, 03:32:45 PM I heard the news at work and was shocked....he was my all time favorite comedian also and kind of felt like he would never die. His work will not die for me. I loved his courage and he set the tone for other comedians...gave them the courage to speak up with humor!!
You will be missed George! Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: menagerie on June 23, 2008, 04:03:44 PM My parents had all his records. I can remember sitting around and LMAO. He even managed to get funnier and more thought provoking after he got off drugs and sobered up. He always made me laugh or think a different way.
Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Krystal on June 23, 2008, 07:32:28 PM I couldn't believe it when I heard it this morning, either.
That guy never failed to crack me up. And I mean I-can't-breathe cracking up. Every time! Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: pinkie1205 on June 23, 2008, 11:38:29 PM I heard this about 6am this morning on the news. I know he will be missed. First Bill Hicks now him? What is the world gonna do????
He came to our town twice that I can remember and both his shows got canceled because he went into drug rehab. Title: Re: George Carlin, Dead at 71 :( Post by: Rattiemama on June 24, 2008, 03:50:56 PM We found out from a friend and I was just dumbstruck. It's the end of an era. Just knowing Carlin was out there, provoking thought, laugher, and a little irritation always made me happy. Someone else mentioned Bill Hicks, and I put the two of them at the top of my list of comics as well. Bill was taken way too young, but at least George got to live to be over 70, and had 50 years of comedy under his belt. There are 50 years of material to pour over for us, and future generations. In a way George will never truly be gone. He made an impact. That's a life worth living.
If you haven't seen his last HBO comedy special (2008), you should check it out. He talks a lot about death and getting old, and it was a little therapeutic to watch after hearing he was gone. You can find it on You Tube in 7 parts. |
