The axe murderer who lives in the basement. I know he's down there, biding his time, waiting for the right moment. I have a far too active imagination, and it causes me to freak myself out on a regular basis - sweating, heart pounding, adrenaline rushing freak out.
I'm that way, too, kmw. For years, I was convinced that flying pirahna fish were going to come out from under my bed as soon as I turned off the light (and I still get the heebie jeebies standing next to the bed... the skin on my ankles crawls). I'd literally leap across half the room to avoid standing next to the bed.
Then, I was convinced that there was an evil "thing" living in the basement of my in-laws house. You had to go down there to do laundry, and the floor was half-dirt, and the other half was just wood planking over dirt. And everytime I turned off that light (you had to lean over the stairs to turn it on and off) I was sure something was going to unearth itself and come rushing up the stairs at me. And the stairs were not completely covered, so I was always worried that something was going to reach between the rungs and grab my ankles (I think I have an obsession with things trying to get my ankles, what do you think?). And I could FEEL it down there looking at me from the dark. *shivers* The really scary thing is that I wasn't the only one in the house who felt that way..............

only 3? well... here is a bunch... pick 3
1: actually seeing things die. I was witness to an avi of a man being decapitated a few days back. Jay was talking online and opened a link somebody posted and there it was. No warning, nothing. Things like this make me lose faith in the human race. (not that i had much to begin with... my mind kinda catalogs all the bad stuff and saves it up for a rainy day)
2. Fish (shutup) fish ALWAYS freak me out. be they dead, alive, swimming gracefully, or flipping out of water. I get nervous and nauseus in seafood resturants, and I literealy flip out at pet stores, especialy if they are large fish... and even more if they are above eye level... and god help the person who puts one in my way of escape. *shudders*
3. Aliens... dont know why... just freak me out.
4. Being lied to for a long period of time to "protect" me from some awfull truth.
5. Being Cheated on again. Just now getting over trust issues... it takes FOREVER
6. Being horribly wrong about what happens after we die
7. Using drugs ever ever ever again
8. Drunk people... either one or a huge croud... drunk people wig me out horribly
9. forgetting who i am. some times i sit and look through my eyes at my hands and think to myself this isnt who i am. I look in the mirror and what i see isnt me. I see a body and a familiar person, but realizing that i'm contained within said body and that that connection is as fragile as it is... confuses me
10. knowing i've gone way far beyond losing all concept of reality... dont want to do it again. People who use hallucinagens have a level system to rate how far out of it they are... 1 being a little high and screwy... 5 being total loss of ego, reality, and self
11. Being judged as a bad person before all the facts are known
12. Being raped... again
I'll shut up now

Ok, see, flying piranha fish under a bed are just silly. Not serious like the axe murderer.
And our basement stairs are closed off - so no ankle grabbing between the stairs. But, they're slippery, so while being chased by the aforementioned axe murderer, I could slip, and be toast. That's why I NEVER walk around the house in only socks. Barefoot or in slippers. Don't want to be caught off guard.

What? You've never seen that movie?!?! I watched it through a gap in the stairway bannister at my aunt's house after I'd been told not to.... I figure the fear was my punishment....

Allright, there's also this fear of drowning. I was riding a raft at some Jersey shore spot when I was younger and I got pounded by a wave and went under. I was thrashing around because I couldn't find my way "up" to the surface. I was totally turned around and losing air. I finally figured out that I had to go limp and float to the surface. Also stemming from that is sea creatures. You never know what you're stepping on or what's swimming toward you like jellyfish. So I stay far away from the ocean as well as swimming pools and things like that. The only way I'll drown is by accidently driving off of a bridge or something.

Leseee. Heights. It's not actually being someplace high up, it's more like this fear that I'll fall and seriously injure or kill myself. I'm fine ON a roof, but going to the edge or getting off of the roof really get me worked up to the point of paralysis.
Ever done the trust fall?
Nope.

Being incarcerated. Boy oh boy all those movies about prison I've seen and there's always ONE COMMON THEME about them.....
No kidding, this is one of those fears I joke about, but my god..... I don't do illegal things, but it doesn't mean someone won't try to frame me!
Well, I don't TRY to do illegal things, but sometimes life happens.
It's not only the dropping the soap issue though, it's that people get stabbed and beaten beacause of who they hang out with and things of that nature. I mean, I don't know how it REALLY is inside the big house, but those movies have made me paranoid about ever having to do time.

Having yet ANOTHER girlfriend cheat on me. They always claim to want the sensitive guy, but when it boils down, they want the "bad" buy.
Uhm... I don't have that one in common with you, but dang, that sucks. I seriously wonder what the hell is wrong with some women.
Though, I used to have trust issues with men who became close to me. This has been resolved, seeing as how I am married and all.
To be fair, it's only happened two out of four times. But twice is more than enough to have made me a little jaded and cautious. Even with my current girlfriend I get paranoid about her going to school and doing group work. I worry about her going to her job and meeting someone there. I mean, it happens, ya know?

1. falling, not heights, falling. i'm not afraid of heights until i look over the edge of a balcony.
2. clowns with white faces.
3. the dark, i have to have a light by my bed, because i can't get up & turn on the light, i'm afraid of something grabbing my ankles, like marybelle. i also can't go into a dark room & onto my bed, i think something will be on it.
4. horses. they're so frigging huge!
5. pain
that's all i can think of right now

Being alone is my biggest fear...currently, I can't be left alone at all. Even it's just for a few minutes, I freak out. Bah, don't know what my problem is.
Losing everyone close to me (mostly Taylor)...pretty close to the being alone thing.
Living on the streets again and being forced to do the things I did during that year. I have nightmares everynight about sleeping in a different bed everynight...or in a dumpster, and that horrible feeling of constantly being afraid.
Oh, and I'm also terrified of bugs...roaches are probably the worst. You wanna see a grown man jump on something and cry like a little girl? Throw a roach at me. hahaha
I have quite a few other fears, but I think I've proven my insanity enough as it is.

1. Torture (like those sickos who keep women chained in secret underground bunkers for years, and the neighbors never knew.)
2. Burning to death
3. Breaking through the ice and drowning (very specific fear---can't even watch movies that have that scene because I get chest pains and can't breath.)

I am extremely afraid of crickets too. (Grasshoppers as well, but oddly I haven't seen a grasshopper in a couple years.) They prevent me from going into the garage a lot. They hold my washer and dryer, fabric, and other things hostage and chirp angrily at me!! We buy those large sticky flat traps and my husband sets them in the garage for me.
Ooh man just thinking about them is making me need to go vomit. Gah.. happy thoughts..
happy thoughts..
happy thoughts..
Oh man really.. *shudder* Icky.
OMG, you're my HERO! My family and friends are convinced I'm the ONLY one with a horrid fear of crickets! One cornered me in a pet store and I screamed and cried until someone came and stepped on it. That took alot of courage on their part. I'm getting to be okay if they're far away whereif they hope a few times the won't get me but if one hops in my path, I'm panicking and running the other way faster than the speed of light.

Thats definitely a legitimate fear. My friend Brandyn stepped on one and when right through - 7 feet into the ground. As he fell, he cut his nipple in half - now he has a permanent slipple
Personally I'm afraid of a lot of things...
I'm afraid of losing the people that I love most dearly.
I'm afraid of rejection.
I'm afraid of failure.
I'm afraid of disappointing the people who believe in me.
I'm afraid to trust.
I'm afraid of ladybugs - deathly afraid of ladybugs...

as a kid I would burst into tears if someone hurt or killed an insect... I loved and still love them all... and I can't imagine what horrible pain they must be feeling as my cousin used to slowly pull off a daddy long legs' legs....... and they'd twitch in his hands.... I would cry for hours on end after that.
I don't mind being hurt or tormented, mentally, physically, or verbally. I DO NOT like others being hurt.. whether they be human, insect, animal.. anything. I always felt the need to take their abuse for them, and it was always like that even as a kid... I would take the rap for my brothers just so they didn't get punished or hit by Dad...
I don't fear being tortured, raped, cut, burned, drowned, etc etc etc... I fear others having it done to them in front of me. I can take pain, and it's easy to concentrate on another area of your body so you don't feel it as intensely.. it's others I worry about
I want to add, I've been crying a lot lately while driving to NY... because of all the trucks carrying livestock, lately..... I hate passing them, seeing them crammed in there barely able to move... sometimes you see legs up in the air or sticking through the holes in the sides of the truck. The pigs are the worse.......

Wow, all these posts are fascinating to read. I can relate to so many of you.
As for me? Here goes:
I'm afraid that my daughter, living on her own now that she's in college, will be raped and/or murdered.
I'm afraid that my son will perish in a car crash. The kid drives too fast!
He
doesn't think so, but I do.
I'm afraid every month that I won't be able to pay all the bills.....
And like Dennis- I worry about the 'cheater'. My boyfriend of almost
13 years
cheated twice (that I know of).
The first time I can understand. I didn't even see it coming. But the second time? I blame myself for giving him a second chance.
We broke up a year ago, and my heart still leaps into my throat when I think some stranger in the mall looks like him or (gasp!) might actually be him!
So......... I'm afraid to trust my own judgement about men. I can't even choose a good one.

I agree, these really are fascinating to read. I'm not sure I've ever read such a long post so thoroughly. Some of us seem to have a lot of fears in common.
kmw: I agree with your fear of the axe murderer, but I must admit your wording had me laughing out loud, and still does. I'm in a computer lab... supposed to be quiet... *suppressed chuckle* I think I laugh partly because I somewhat share the fear.
1. Fear of someone breaking in to my house and "getting me," and everything that phrase implies. Rape, torture, murder, whatever. I'm afraid when I come home that someone will be hiding in my house, possibly under my bed or in a closet, just waiting for me to turn out the lights so they can jump out and get me. Sometimes before bed I have to check under all the furniture and in all the closets to make sure. I double lock the doors. Oh, and of course it helps to have the cats with me. They'll save me for sure!! Good kitties! I often have this feeling that someone is in one corner of my room at night, always the same corner, I just can't see them. Like it's a ghost or something. And I feel like my cats keep it away. How crazy is that? Like my cats are going to do anything besides a) stare, and then b) run, or c) ask it for some lovin', b or c depending on which cat it is.
2. Bees and ticks (I figure both insect things can be grouped into one). I freeze every time there's a bee around, I forget to breathe, I panic, I lose my ability to think, I freak out completely. I've been stung about a zillion times, and I get more allergic every time. They HATE me. They want to kill me for sure. And ticks -- I wasn't so afraid of them until I was running my hand through my husband's hair one evening, and I felt this little "scab." I picked it off and looked at it, and it wiggled its horrid little legs at me. I squealed and flung it across the room, and then of course we had to seek it out because obviously we couldn't have it wandering around the room. I'm now terrified of finding more ticks on things (great fear for a vet, huh? yeah), and, even worse, finding ticks on myself. I don't know what I'll do if I ever find one on myself.
3. Knives -- I have this irrational fear of knives. I don't know why. I cut myself with butter knives on a frequent basis, so perhaps that's why I fear the sharp ones -- if I cut myself with a sharp one I could easily lose a finger or something. I don't even like to look at sharp ones. And my parents have this little knife drawer mounted under their cabinets -- it opens by pulling down on it, but it sticks, so when you pull down it sort of jerks open. I visualize the knives all flying out at me all at once, straight and fast, like on the Looney Toons cartoons.
Okay, that's all I can think of now. I'm gonna be late, and I fear public humiliation from my senior clinicians -- the little senior student is late, where were you??

I spent the summer in a locale where there were so many crickets they obscured the lights at baseball games and you could hear them crunching under the car wheels.

Dying a painful, gruesome and extended death.
Having time to realise that I'm dying when my time comes to die (I don't want to know about it!!)
Being alone in the dark. I HATE that. Overactive imagination = hears noises = is convinced someone is out to kill her.
At night, even in summer, I need to have at least a quilt over me. It's weird... I need enough weight there for me to feel it... it's almost like if it's there, nothing could suddenly stab me or bite me or shoot me. It's a security thing. I can't lie in bed without something over the top of me.
I also get startled really easily. Things suddenly flying past my head or suddenly moving make me jump. My friend's house freaks me out - her cat is constantly leaping out of nowhere and it scares me half to death.
