to tell which messages I have read?  I tried pushing the "Mark as Read" button, but it didn't look any different to me.  Is there something I'm missing?

From my experience, although the moderators will likely have a better answer, the Mark as Read button marks all of the "new" posts as read.   The way I have done it is to start by pressing the Mark as Read button then pressing refresh on an almost continual basis.  That gets rid of the "new" thingy after you have read the topic and shows if any of the others have new posts.   Hope that helps a little.   Cheesy

On any messages that have recieved new replies or been started after you look at the forum, there will be a "new" icon next to the subject.  Once you've read it, the icon disapears until someone else replies to that message.

Grace and Tara are correct. The mark as read marks ALL posts as read. Any new post after that will show a "NEW" icon next to it. Since you already clicked on mark as read only posts since that time will show. Once you read a post the new icon will dissapear.

On a sort of related note, is there any way to put a link back to the particular forum at the end of the pages, so you can go back and it'll refresh without having to hit back and then refresh?  One of the other forums I'm on does this, and it's pretty neat.  Saves a lot of button pushing.   Grin

If the "jump to" menu at the bottom right had a "Go" button of some kind, it would probably work better... BUT there is a way...

Above the thread, there is a "tree" that shows you where you are -- if you put your cursor over any one of the titles there, they become links, and you can navigate from there.  Grin

Well, I tried using jump to, and it won't take me back to the board I'm on.  Very strange.  So I guess I'll have to scroll back up to the top ( I was being lazy, I guess, and didn't really think of it).  I'd seen the tree, but didn't realize it would link.  Thanks!

Do you use your browser's "back" button to get to the page after you've read a message?  If you do, try going back to the "Home", then to the area you were just in - threads you've read already should have the "new" removed.

My "new" buttons go away if I refresh the page and I've already read them, and the ones with new that I have not read yet remain so I don't get lost.  But then I'm using Mozilla on Linux so it may do things differently - it usually does!

Nope, that worked for me, as well.  I'm lazy so I use the back button, and when I hit refresh, the threads I had read already had the "new" removed.  I'm using IE 5.0  Smiley
