New fur baby :)
«

Well, I got my ferret much sooner than I expected. My boyfriend surprised me with a cage and friday I brought my new baby home.
He's such a cute little guy...and so much fun to play with.
I never expected to get one with his coloration (I've always been a sucker for the masks), but his personality won me over. Everytime I put him down to play with another baby, he'd soon come back to me and just stare up at me until I would reach back down, then he'd wrap his little paws around my arm so I was forced to pick him back up again.
He's been very good about his litterbox...he knew right away what it was for. We've only had one accident so far *knocks on wood*. Right now I'm trying to deal with his new "fun" game of latching onto your hand and refusing to let go (talk about ouch...my hand looks like it was attacked by a vampire....at least he hasn't drawn blood). I brought home the Bitter Apple stuff tonight and am already noticing a difference...so here's hoping this will be cured quickly. (Either that or I'm going to open my own piercing parlor, lol).
Anyway, here are a few pictures of my new baby, Fidget:

Yuppers... that's a Marshall Farm ferret... those tattoos always give it away. (it's two dots, right?)
Very cute babe... just remember that they're a TON of trouble!!
DT is right about the medical bills.. poor guys are very prone to adrenal gland problems.

Yes, I'm sorry to say he is from Marshall's
.
I've already started what my boyfriend and I call the "Fidget Foundation"...aka a piggy bank for him. Every paycheck we each put in at least $20....I figure I start that now and we'll at least be a little bit prepared if and when something major happens.

4 1/2 years old my marshall boy went in for adrenal surgery... altogether from surgery cost, blood tests, and eventually the cremation (he threw a blood clot the night after the surgery) it cost me 1000 dollars... surgery alone cost over 600...

I've been owned by 2 wonderful ferrets and fostered a bunch more... as you no doubt know... they nip and claw as part of their play... so obviously it's nothing personal... bitter apple is a great product.. and I found that my natural reaction 'OW... and a calm (immediate) NO. and putting the ferret down and ignoring her or him as soon as he/she nipped, was a good way to train against nipping/biting. It really only took a day or so with my male ferret and less than a week with my female ferret before they absolutely never bit or nipped again. They HATE being ignored.. more than anything.
I love the way they yawn... and the way they'll do it on command... and they'll fearlessly stick their heads right inside your mouth to steal your food if you let them... then yawn on command (which is when i loved sticking my nose into their mouths! =)) I miss my ferrets who are both hanging out at the bridge, stealing gummi worms and gorging on nutrical

PS Your little guy is a total heart stealer!! I can see why you let him pick you =)

Wow, he's cute! Does he do bellybuttons? LOL. A question to other ferret owners. Is there a place to get them that doesn't have a history of arenal gland problems? Is this fatal to the ferret?

You could check out a private breeder, who breeds according to the seasons and doesn't neuter the poor things before their eyes even open... but that's still no guarantee, just better odds. Same as a pet store rat vs. a well bred one.
I love him, Shimmer! He looks like a blaze champaigne mitt to me, but I'm no ferret-color expert.
So cute!

The tattoos tell them that the are spayed/neutered & maybe something else(not sure). Look around for a good ferret vet. My vet is AMAZING! We have never had a problem with adrenal gland removals. Top cost for the surgery is about $400 with everything. Good luck, he's cute! Chelsea

spayed/neutered and descented.. mine cost more than that because I went with a vet I trusted... and yeah, was more expensive than usual unless you count the fact that it also included blood work that was sent out of state to the labs, but she was my regular vet who had saved countless rats of mine... I just don't think Spam was for this world.. he was too special and even now his ashes are in my bedroom on a dresser

Ohhhh, he's adorable! I
love
the markings -- what beautiful colours! More pictures, more pictures!!!
I might like a ferret one day... but at the moment, I'm trying very slowly to get my lifelong-petless boyfriend used to the idea of dogs and cats and rats before I go for anything else! He's terrified of the very idea of ferrets, poor boy.
I don't know anything about them, except that they're cute, they're smart, and all the people I've come across here and elsewhere online, who are both GOOD pet owners and have ferrets, love them to death!

Yeah, they yawn when you scruff them, right?? I used to LOVE that!!! I'd scruff mine sometimes if he wouldn't calm down enough to let me cut his nails, and he'd yawn, yawn, yawn away! I almost forgot about that!!
Mine was a Marshall's too.

He's too precious!! I adore ferrets, but I've never had one, nor do I think I should get one. I'll live vicariously through everyone else's!! I just want to hug him and kiss him!!

Whoa, my vet is very trustworthy. I work with him everyday & would trust him with any of my pets. People don't realize that you can get great service cheaper. Just because you pay a fortune does not make them a good vet. I believe you that yours is great. I was just saying it can be done at a more reasonable price with a good outcome. Sorry. Chelsea

Shimmer has the pics hosted on a free goosemoose website which doesn't allow remote linking anymore. The need to be uploaded to the photo albums
