"Which way did he go, George, which way did he go?

I have the cage, I have toys, I have everything I need except ferretfood and...the ferret. By the end of the month I should have enough set aside to get my new baby, what I'm wondering is, should I get a male, or a female? I know the best thing is to get two, but I can't get two just yet. Ferret #2 will come later down the road.

Males, I'm told, are more likely to enjoy my company, sleep more, like to be handled, etc.

Females, I'm also told, are more likely to enjoy each other's company rather than mine, will typically be moodier and harder to train.

I like female animals over male ones, but then of course I've never had a ferret. ;>

most people feel there is no real difference in ferrets' personality based on sex.  males tend to be larger (three to five pounds, my seven month old boy is already huge at just over four pounds) and females smaller (one to three pounds average).  my boys are very large and broad, with nice, wide heads.  my girl is very petite and delicate (looking at least).  rem, my girl, is more spazzy and active, but she's also the youngest.  i don't recall the boys having been quite as active, but i could be wrong.  she is such a spazz! whoever told you that females don't like their people as much was definately mistaken.  i am the absolute center of my girlie's life.  i am her favorite toy, favorite playmate, favorite friend.  given the option she would rather be playing with me.  she is less cuddley, but that's only because she'd rather be playing!  once she's got herself all worn out, momma's lap is the first place she comes for a nap.  and i would never ever consider her to be moody!  she is a sweet heart through and through!

in all honesty, the amount of love and cuddling you get out of them will depend on how much you handle them (and their age), not their sex.  really the only thing i can think might make sex matter is their physical appearance.  i like the broader, heavier look of males more.  some people like the more refined, delicate female look more.  (and you can always get ferret one now, and ferret two of the opposite sex, then you can see for yourself if there's a difference!)

i also have both, and dragynflye is right, they'll still love you as much. while by boys are playing with eachother, my little girl will come and play with me. She'll sit for a moment on my lap, and get me to play. she really does come to play with me more then the boys do.

But really there isn't too much difference. it is just all of their different personalities that is the difference.

good luck with your fuzzies. I'm sure you'll enjoy them. or it, once you get just the one

The little boy I was looking at last night was a riot. You've seen the cartoons with Pepe LePew, I assume, and if you've seen him bounce along when he's chasing the 'sexy female skunk'...Well, this crazy boy last night was 'boinging' around the pet store like that last night, he was having a great time playing with me, and although while we were playing he was play-biting, I figure cause he was playing...Cause if I picked him up he'd stop biting. And he never bit -hard-. The game ended after a while cause he was sleepy...He crawled up my pantlegs, came out through the waist of my pants and tried to get into my shirt to snuggle in. He ended up falling asleep in my arms. Needless to say, this boy is now on my list of possibilities. Wink

awwww!  he sounds precious!  what color is he?  how old is he?  it sounds like he is a very friendly little guy with lots of personality!  i just loooove the way they bounce around!  and when they get really excited they trip and fall all over themselves and bounce into things!  it's hillarious!  whenever i'm out with the kids and come across some one who's never been around a ferret before, i get the inevitalbe "does it bite?"  i tell them no, but they play with their mouths just like a puppy would.  and just like with a puppy, you teach them what's acceptable and what's not.  and, like puppies, most baby ferrets outgrow the mouthy stage.

It depends on their personality. In general, girls are a bit more hyper and active, and boys are a bit more laid back. But, my first ferret was a girl and she was SO laid back and cuddly.
I suggest, if you are getting a kit (baby ferret), if you want him/her to be a cuddly ferret, cuddle them several times a day. During playtime, just pick them up and cuddle them for a few quick seconds, give them a treat, put them back down. That's what I did with my boys. They have great personalities, and now love to cuddle for a few minutes before playtime. They like their ears and head rubbed.

I say get that boy!! Name him Pepe or something lol
