The White Weasels

So, I have missed ferrets ever since my first ferret in 1978, with the exception of the time we had Leon and Herbie, may they rest in peace, which of course was wonderful... such exceptional boys. (I did manage to discover and get adopted Cal, whom I encountered when I had to go back out of the country, and I get to visit him.) Anyhow, I've always managed restraint since (and had dreamed of marked white and silvermitt) and had wanted, after the last fellows, to start with young ferrets again someday so there would be more years before they got old, but still wanted to do a rescue. I had ended my time out of country, and moved into a bigger room in the house this past week (partly motivated by knowing the other one was not appropriate for ferrets). But anyhow, last Sunday I went to a store I never go to nowadays for fish purposes, and there were a brother and sister pair of white weasels looking at me: they had been left in a BACKPACK on the back steps of the store! The store had put them in a spare cage and it was a package deal. Would I like to hold them? they asked. I forgot about the fish. But I STILL went back home twice, to make sure I was considering things correctly-- and it was empty in this huge, empty (thus, ferretsafe) room without ferrets for all those hours and the poor ferrets were locked up a few blocks over probably waiting for their human to come back for them.
Well, the instant I came home with them the next day, NO REGRETS said my mind. They were SO happy. They went bananas the moment I let them out in the room. They've had a WONDERFUL week wooking around, playing and learning to enjoy Ferretone, cheweasels, tube games, etc. that they had cleary not met before. They've had vet trip #1 and are due back this week, and then we hope they can have play dates with Cal, sleepovers and visits back and forth, etc. We are all delighted and I am so fulfilled and Living again... of course, it was too hectic to take or post many photos. Some are here (had to be captures from video, so are blurry). (That wire is plugged in only for this laptop now, to do the photos! it's bitter-appled and they didn't bother it, while I tried to play paparazza.)

oh my gosh they are beautiful!!!! the second pic looks just like my little deaf boy, wolfwood. i also have a weakness for the lighter colored ferrets (and my husband likes the super dark sables). wolfwood is a deaf light silver panda, and vash is a silver bibbed mitt (or something like that!). congrats on your two new babies. they are adorable and i am sure they will make you laugh like crazy!
btw, have you named them yet?!

Why thank you. (Yes, the dark sables are cute too with those masks... I loved this one at a store, but managed to resist enough times and now he's gone.) You know, I wondered if either or both were deaf, but it's pretty clear they both hear fine. (So not even such an excuse for whoever dropped them off!) Good news== they're cleared on ADV, so they just met Cal, who unfortunately has not socialized with other ferrets in so long that he could have been politer, alternately ignoring/exploring or trying to scruff them. But at least nobody really fought, and they all ran around doing various things ok, and had some Ferretone together, and it was all right for an initial meeting. (Didn't want it too long to stress the sweeties out-- Cal was harassing his new crush. Fortunately they didn't mind the yuckytastestuff on their scruffs...) Afterwards they were sleeping thus below, little darlings... Thanks for noting their beauty. (of course I agree >
And their names are Zakiy (the boy-- means pure, and his color sure is, and also sweet, good, smart, blameles-- very appropriate) and (officially) Jumana (means silver pearl) but unofficially Zara (e.g. 'little pest').
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I must crash now-- they were pestering me when I went to bed, so I let them out a little more while downloading the below. Here.... zzzz these photos make you sleepy...

The majority of ferrets are usually descented and fixed prior to being sent to the retail stores. Private breeders generally don't. Also, if, by chance, you do get a breeder female, best to have her spayed, for her own health. Ferret females need to be bred when in heat, or they can become seriously anemic and die. Best bet would be to check for a rescue in your area, and adopt.(Hmmm that sounds familiar.

Yes, my previous ferrets were rescues. So is my current 'godferret,' but he was from a Swedish Shorthair breeder (like the previous ones) and somehow escaped neutering. My current ones are fixed-- I explain to civilian after civilian that no, we're not going to have baby ferrets, they're like brother and sister-- females get aplastic anemia if not spayed, breeders must be licensed and really know what they're doing and often keep a vasectomized hob, etc. etc. State law here is that fertsies must be neutered/descented before being sold in pet stores, and the ferret farms take care of that (perhaps too early). Yes, try a rescue!
The sweeties are chasing each other right now as I type. oops, gtg...
