Kitty litter?
«

I have been trying to find out if I can use kitty litter in my ferret's litter pan. Each website seems to give a different answer. My ferrets do not play in their litter pan. They just get in, do their business, and get out. So would it be safe to use the kitty litter. And if so, what brand do you recommend?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Yesterdays's news would be safe. I wouldn't use clay or anything clumping.

That is what I am using now. I really do not like it though. Are there any safe kitty litters? What other litters are available?
Thanks!

Is your ferret box trained? You can put any of the safe pet beddings as litter in the box, carefresh etc.

i've tried lots of things for my ferrets. i've used yesterday's news, feline pine, and a few others that i can't remember right now (man my head hurts!) but i finally settled on swheat scoop. it clumps naturally, no icky nasty chemicals, is low dust, and is killer on oder control! i've seen people say that clay cat litter is fine, and some say it's not. but honestly, i just don't trust it....

carefresh in a box would result in carefresh strewn allllllll over the cage. same with aspen (tired that one.... they loved it, i coulda killed them!) ferrets love to dig so a heavier litter is usally best. something light and fluffy is just tooo tempting to resist! and would also most likely result in a ferret
sleeping
in the box!

yes, all three of them are litter box trained. I am using YN right now and they never play in the box. their litter box is on the bottm level and they go to the bottom, use the box and go back up. I do not think that digging woud be a problem. They have two other levels they sleep on and another that they eat/drink on. The safety factor is my main concern.

The only problem I have heard of with swheat scoop is that animals will sometimes eat it and it clumps and causes problems after they eat it.

rats will eat it because they are omnivores and it is wheat. ferrets are force carnivores. they have absolutely no intrest what so ever in eating it.

We have used wood stove pellets. They are inexpensive and the ferrets don't scatter them all over the place like they do with some litters. I would NOT recommend using kitty litter of any kind.
