Yes, they are illegal here in California..and you cannot own them for ANY reason, there are not even special licenses. I love ferrets, but I live in California..

If you get ferrets, and someone finds out..they will most likely be euthanized.

Ferrets are absolutely illegal in California. LIke someone else said, there is not even a special permit. Please do NOT break the law and get a ferret. If someone finds out and you are reported, you WILL lose your ferret and more likely than not it WILL be euthanised.

Yes you HEARD correctly.  Your FIANCE will have to pick a different pet.  However, from reading some of your other postings I would advise you to research research research everything you can about whatever pet you do decide to go with for a year before you actually get that pet.  I would also advise you to get a handle on your rat situation and learn a lot more about rat care before you bring another pet into your home.  Because you can not just care for animals based on what you HEARD and what your FIANCE and you think is right to do.

OldsGal I am a rat Certified breeder so i have my rat "situation" undercontrol. I wouldn't break the law ever thought thats why i asked the question? I ALWAYS do my homework before getting a pet. You know nothing about me and i would have thought people on here wouldn't be so rude to new comers. Thank You to the rest of you have helped clear this up for me.

Ok so I humbly apologize as I did make a small mistake.  I was confusing you with another newbie on here who was posting very similar to you.  I take back the research and under control comment I made.  No I do not make a habit of attacking new people nor do I make a habit of being rude to people but this other new person that I confused you with well...I won't go into it.  So please accept my apology.

I am confused; what is a "rat certified breeder?"

I thought there was a permit that allowed ferrets to be kept as pets, too, but then I found this  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/species/nuis_exo/ferret/ferret_issues.shtml
It states that the permit only allows to transport ferrets, not keep them as pets.
So, for all the people who own them illegally in California, how do they get vet treatment? Are vets required to turn the owners in to Fish & Game?
