Be kind to every living thing!

Monday night I noticed that Loki wasn't quite acting right and thought I heard him cry, so I started to keep a closer eye on him. I have to admit that I have been distracted from my rat boy, Jaylen being so sick and having to take him to the ER vet at 4 am that morning to help him cross. I hope he hadn't been sick for very long and i missed it because of all the confusion. Like rats, ferrets are very good about hiding illnesses.

Tuesday morning I notices that he was crying when he tried to pee so obviously all was not well. I called the vet and couldn't get an appointment until 6 pm. I took him in and while waiting for our appointment, Loki laid quietly in my arms which he NEVER does. I began to cry because I had a terrible feeling as I began to realize just how serious this was.

We went in and he was examined and his prostate was x-rayed. She also tried to catheterize him and it took two attempts because he was so blocked and when she finally got it in, lots of nasty pus came out. His prostate was very enlarged. He's almost bald from his adrenal disease and his insulinoma has been giving him problems as well.

Dr. Putt and I discussed all the treatment options and it became painfully obvious that anything we did for him would either not work at all or would only help for a short time. Loki was still under anesthesia. I went in to be with him.  After much soul searching and tears, I decided it was best to let him go. He would have been 9 years old in August. Loki had survived 4 surgeries including one when he was bitten in the face by our Great Dane. He was a tough, brave little guy. He lived a good, long life with us and I miss him dearly.
