Penny is acting strangely! I'm trying to decide whether to take her in.

Penny was walking around all wobbly and then started falling over! I put her back in the cage and she was just lying there breathing hard but not panting. She would try to get up but would fall back over. All the vets are closed now except for the ER vet which would be a fortune and there may be no one there who is knowledgeable about ferrets.

I took her out of the cage and held her. She was trembling but still very responsive. I gave her some Karo syrup thinking it might be low blood sugar. In a few minutes I put her down on the floor and she was walking around and breathing just fine. I gave her a bowl of food and she started chowing down just like normal. I made an appointment for her on Monday to get her checked over just in case, but my question is, should I still take her in or just watch her and if it happens again take her? Why do they always do this on weekends after the vets close?!

I know this response is a few days late.
Sounds like the start of adrenal to me.  Our old ferret started with those same symptoms before progressing into full adrenal disease.
Though, sometimes ferrets "shake" when they first wake up and get going - both of ours do.  That is normal, they do it especially when woken up by something other than themselves.

Were you aware that one of the 8 in 1 foods was part of the pet food recall?  Not sure what you are feeding.  We had a "bad" bag, but neither of our ferrets got sick on it.  We didn't know it was recalled until 3/4ths of the way through the bag.

I know this is late as well but Gidgett was like this last year. She had a bacterial infection. We thought it was insulnomia at first but she tested negative for that.

We fed her baby food once every four hours by syringe to make sure that she got a proper amount of food. I did that and took her to the vet first thing the next morning. They gave her some fluids, put her on antibiotics, and did tons of test on her. The antibiotics that he test said wasn't the best one for the bug actually worked for her. I was very happy about that.
