Hi there,
I've had Ozzy (4 y/o male) for about a year now. My friend was trying to find a home for his two 1 1/2 y/o ferrets. I thought about it for a long time. I did a lot of research and thought a companion would be good for him, especially now that I just started school. Anyway, I introduced them in mutual territory and it went fine. Then I brought them in my bedroom where Ozzy plays.
Ozzy was so excited to play with Keagan (male). Keagan invites him to play, but Ozzy plays so rough. He has not drawn blood, but Keagan always squeaks and squeaks. Ozzy barley plays with Sydney (female), but when he does, he is not as rough with her as he is with Keagan, but she still squeaks. Is this squeaking normal?
Does Ozzy not know how to play (he hasnt been with another ferret since he was purchased at Petco)?

Thanks!

I had 2 ferrets when I was a kid (17 now).
As far as I can remember they always hissed and squeaked in their cute little ferrety way... Was cute when they tried to get the cat to play (he was an old sourpuss)

Congrats on the kids; hope someone has less of a memory-based answer for you XD

(I can't tell you what gender my ferrets were.... I think they ended up being female, but it was never really clear to any of us. We thought they were male when we bought them (or.. however we acquired them.. like I said, I was younger XD), then found out they were female, then someone else told us they were male, then when one died we took another to a ferret rescue lady and she told us that one was female. *shrugs*)

If Ozzy had always been a single ferret, he might not know how rough is too rough.  My ferret has that problem and that's why she's single housed.  She does the same thing, she bites the scruff and holds them down until they are shrieking to be let up and she won't.  She also badgers other ferrets nonstop and won't leave them alone.  Grabbing scruffs and holding them down is a dominant behavior.  You can wait and see if they resolve it themselves.  Sometimes they just need to have it out until the pecking order is established.  If they're just small squeaks, then I'd try to let them sort it out.  If they're shrieking bloody murder like they're being killed, I'd intervene.  You can try scruffing and dragging Ozzy to tell him that he's not allowed to pick on them so much.  This has worked on one occasion I can think of.  There was still squeaking, but the dominant one stopped beating the stuffing out of the other ones.  The other thing is to put Ozzy in a time out cage.  Put food and water and litterbox in a small cage and leave him in there for like 3-5 minutes.  Long enough to get bored.  It may take a long long time to train them.  I've seen it take 2 months, but I've only seen it once so I'm hardly an expert.

Good luck!
