I read in a previous thread that some of you guys are in the penn foster online vet tech program. I have worked as a vet assistant for about 4 years and would like to become a licensed tech. I've pretty much decided on penn foster because I would be able to keep my full time job as a surgical assistant at a small animal referral hospital and still work on my vet tech degree at my own pace. Also, I already have a BS in zoology so hopefully I will be able to transfer a lot of gen ed. credits. Anyway, my main concern with penn foster is how long their provisional accreditation status is guaranteed. Does anyone know when their next AVMA review will be? And do you guys think they will become fully accredited?

Also, I'd love to hear about the format of the practicums especially the large animal requirements. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I think it was supposed to be this year. I haven't looked into it in awhile. Fell way behind due to time constraints and other issues Tongue  Bad me!

I am on the fence about whether or not they will become fully accredited. In order for that to happen they need a certain number of graduates for that program. They've not had many. If people stick with it (there were a LOT of newbies last year) then it will happen.

I want to do Penn Foster, as well....for the dog obediance and dog grooming diploma. I am waiting on my fiancee to get into the Navy, so that I can work less and focus on a career.

I'm doing Penn Fosters Vet Tech program Smiley

I don't have answers to your questions, but if you call them, they are super helpful!  I have loved doing the program so far.  Very easy to manage, considering I work 2 jobs and volunteer with MRR :-P

I am not sure what the rules are like in different states, but it seems like it would be pointless to attend a non-accredited vet tech school. I know in PA you can't get your license unless you graduate from an accredited school and also pass the national exam within one year (before or after) graduating.  It just seems like it would be a waste of money.
