I'm looking for info from the pro breeders here and anyone else up on their rat genetics.
We took in a hairless mom and her litter. We know that both possible dads are both standard coat. Is it possible the babies will be hairless or will they be rex or double rex? I always thought that for rex you need at least one rex parent, for double rex, two rex parents... but what about a hairless mom and standard dad? 7 out of the 10 babies have super curly whiskers. Mom was not well nourished so the babies all look like runts. When I compare with the other litters at 7 days old, we usually see fuzz and white by this time but not with these ones.
Here they are at 7 days old:

My last two litters out of Maisey had a mix of rex and double rex babies out of them. Mommy was Rex. Daddy was a bad double rex. Meaning he had fur all over it was just very very short and thin. The babies all were born normal and grew all of their fur. Then at about 3 to 3 1/2 weeks some of them started to loose their fur in patches to the point that they were hairless. Then at about 4-5 weeks they grew it back to be really thin like daddy. I thought that would be the end of it. But nope...They started to loose it again about a week later and regrow and loose....and so on. As for your babies I have no idea...You will know for sure at about 3 to 3 1/2 weeks though!

Are you sure mom is hairless? She might be a double rex that appears hairless, which can happen sometimes. That would explain rex babies.

I had a litter come to me a few years ago, and the dad had been a hairless (Double rex
) and the mom was standard fur and ears.
ALL the babies were rex.
So momma may be a double rex, and the babies may be rex.
If the daddy was a carrier for hairless, and she is a hairless, they could be hairless.
There's no way for them to be double rexes if the daddy was standard.
So if they come out curly, the moma is a double rex.

You have rex and standard coated babies.
Your mother is not hairless, but a double rex.
A double rex bred to a standard coat will just act as a regular rex and you will have a mix of rex and standard coat pups.
Are those black splotches on the two brown ones? Nice spots. Mink Merles. Looks like you have Black, one American Blue and a Beige as well.

Thanks guys!
If mom is a double rex, she sure is doing a good job of hiding it. lol She does not have any hair at all. None, completely bald.
Here she is:
Is hairless dominant? Can dad carry it? I'm really hoping for rex babies!

You see dumbo ears? Very strange as the possible fathers are all standard-eared. It was a rescue situation and all rats were taken in.

I find that weird too but there is one dumbo. How can that be? The possible dads are not dumbo, I suppose they could carry though.

Jani the mom is dumbo.
But going by what's being bred in Sudbury, I can't imagine those boys carrying but I guess they must.
This means someone here, a byb is trying to produce dumbos.

So, in the first picture, is the baby on the left a dumbo? I'm not too good at knowing that when babies are so little.

Yes. That's the one I was referring to. You can see the ears are set lower on the head than the baby next to him. Look a the placement compared to the eyes. Daddy must have carried dumbo.

Here are the babies now at 10 days old. We've got some very pretty colours. Anyone care to guess what they might be? I'm thinking, minks, blacks, pearl merle, beige and blue.
