This is a really cool thread, I loved reading through it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE the diversity!
As for me? I have two jobs. First off, the boring one. I run the clerical end of my husband's landscaping business. Paperwork, bookkeeping, everything that doesn't involve pushing a mower, from hiring to picking up parts orders, to delivering materials to jobs, to dealing with customers....
Also, I'm a professional taster for International Flavors and Fragrances. (IFF) Basically, I'm a human lab rat
. We taste things. Mostly detecting intensities, and mal-flavors. The past few months we've been working on aromatic flavor compounds that make up pasta sauce, including the essence of parsley, basil, and today garlic. We've been tasting these flavor compounds in cold water, hot water, on pasta both cold and hot, on pasta in sauce cold and hot, and just the sauce, cold and hot. It was wonderful, actually, till today when we did 22 samples of cold garlic water
.
I've evaluated levels of strawberry flavor, creamy, sweet, tart, and dairy profiles for Activia, spent 5 LONG months detecting levels of oxidization in orange drink (so Tang can develop better packaging), sniffed out sulphur compounds in solutions resembling skunk beer and wine (those were difficult mornings, to say the least). Just, all sorts of stuff, flavor compounds in salad dressings, toothpastes, sports drinks, mints, mayonaise, colas. You would be shocked at what has artifical flavorings or enhancers in it.
My company also does a lot with scents, for air fresheners, cleaning products, just any scented products. Before I got hired on as a pro-taster, I ran the spectrum of sniffing things, evaluating laundry soaps, scented oil things, aromatherapy scents. I am so glad I got promoted out of that, if I had to answer one more stupid "How did that Lavender Vanilla laundry detergent make you
feel
?". I would have screamed.
K, you think that job is weird? My first job was working at a small family run pork rind factory. Oh yeah, baby, it was my friend's mom's company, and I worked there with my friend, her siblings, and her mom. I was the bag sealer. I could seal a whole case of bags in about 3 minutes. They loooooved me. It was a blast, we played the radio loud, laughed, joked, and all the free pork rinds and shrimp chips you could eat! Hey, I was 15...it was the coolest thing ever.
In between, I did a lot of deli work, some cashier jobs, and eventually catering. I really want to own my own legit catering business. (I cater a lot on the side, for friends and small parties, but I want to do it officially.) I went to school as far as my AA, for education, but I decided that I really didn't want to teach anymore. I'm gonna go back, maybe this fall to start the paralegal program, to help run the family business a little better.

I'm a student, but for the summer I'm working at Cedar Point as a Ride Operator. I work the RipCord. It's pretty fun working there, just not living there. I miss Michigan.

I'm 17 and I got my first job at 14 at a pet boarding kennel. Everything was going great until they hired college people that didn't know what they were doing and thought that were better than those that had been working there for years. Lets just say that it went down the tubes when I wouldn't do what one wanted me to do. Currently, I'm looking for a job as a cashier somewhere and I'm hope to find one before school lets out.

I am currently a Veterinary Assistant, but do all the work of a Tech for less pay (as a couple of others have already said, isn't that the way it goes?). I am halfway through my associates degree in Veterinary Technology, so it'll come eventually.
It has its days, but all in all i really enjoy my job. Its not to the point where i WANT to wake up in the mornings and go, but i definitely do not dread it like i have my past jobs. I enjoy it, for the most part. The emotional side of things can be tiring, especially because we work very closely with the county's animal shelter. I've seen enough embedded collars, HBC's, and just plain neglect to last me a lifetime. The worst since the year i've been in the field was last week, a dog hit by a car, who had been allowed to lick/naw on his hurt leg to the point where NOTHING was left but bones and tendons. All the flesh was gone. It was promptly amputated, but had to have been one of the most digusting (and sadly also fascinating
) things i've ever seen.

Service Sales Rep for an HVAC controls contractor. Techie construction stuff. Still an old boy's club on the sales side, so being a 26 year old female makes it interesting.

I'm 17 and working my first "real" job. My parents decided it was a good idea to buy the local record store last year in March. My step dad and I started working there that April and offically took over May 1st 2007. There's a coffee shop in there too, so I'm actually a barista. But it's the oldest independant record store in Western Washington! I also work at a volunteer run coffee shop/youth center called the Boiler Room! But I have no idea what I should do for a career, and I'm turning 18 in July!

I'm sixteen, and I've been working at an old resort, spa, and golf club for about five months now.
I work in the resort shop, and I work in the ice cream shop & coffee bar, and hostess/room service when they need it.
It's pretty neat, I get paid well, especially for it being my first job.
I don't think I'll stay in hospitality after I'm done with this job (it closes for renovation for 2 years in May 2009) but it is a place I enjoy working at.
Lot of history in the hotel, and I meet a lot of cool people.
My sister, who is twenty, works there too, has been for a couple years now.
She supervises in the restaurant there, shes actually going to school now for hospitality.

I've been a teacher for 31 years. I've taught 5th and 6th grade (approx 10-12 yr olds) science for a number of years. My main background is in Earth Science. I also have a minor in art and have been known to teach art in the past before the 5th graders were added to our Middle School.
My very first job (back in the stone age) was babysitting. My first real job was at age 17 working for Sears in the Customer Service Dept. I worked for Sears all the way through college.

What an interesting thread.
I work as a projectionist for two different movie theater chains. At one, the largest chain in the WORLD
, I'm the Projection Booth Manager. That means that I'm one step down from Technician, and in charge of every aspect of my theater's booth. I build up, screen, break down, fix everything, and train new people. I also do downstairs manager stuff too, like cash management, concession restock and supervise, box supervise, etc. My main focus, one that comes above all others, is projection. I'm the "fill-in" tech without the tech pay rate.
My other booth job is as a projectionist for a small but growing dinner-and-a-movie chain here in DFW (No, it's not Movie Tavern! Talk about LACK of presenation!! Ug!). I do 40+hours a week here, often in large 15 1/2 hour shifts. I love this job because unlike the other one, I don't have to wear nice clothes, and I don't have to work downstairs!! Just me and the machines.
I should mention that film projection is still a boys club. It's hard to be taken seriously as a 23 year old female. But I'm stubborn, and I take pride in my work and want to show all the ol' timer changeover guys that it CAN be done right with determination, a good attitude and loads of hard work.
I'm also a senior at the University of Texas at Arlington. I'm a Criminology and Criminal Justice major and a Forensic Biology minor. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with those degrees yet...
My first job was working in a Marble Slab ice cream store, then as a cashier at Tom Thumb. Third job was at a theater, and as you can see, I haven't looked back!
'scuse me, I gotta go thread.

I work as a lab assistant in the Mammals department of a museum. I love it, though it would not be appreciated by many members of this board. I mainly work with the large collection (one of the ten largest in the country) organizing, cataloging, entering data, and prepping mammals. I think the most awesome animal I have gotten to work with is a tiger, but I have also done elephants, wolves (lots) bears, lynx, sea otters (they have AMAZING coats, and are huge), a sloth, domestic dogs and cats, lots and lots of shrews and voles. We do a lot of genetic work also.

after losing my last job, I finally started a new one this week. It's in medical billing. I am still in training, so I am not sure if I am really going to like it yet or not, but so far, it seems like it's going to work out just fine.

I will keep the repetition going and say I am also a vet assistant that does tech work. I have been at it now for almost 7 years I think.... maybe 6... I tried for tech school, but my math/science grades were just not high enough. After trying 2 times I felt I was letting people down, so I stopped trying.
I am stuck now. I am not sure where I should be. I know I will not be happy where I am for life, but I don't know what I would like to do more.

Well I'm 19 and currently a full time student trying to get through medical school. If I can manage my way through it I aspire to be a pediatrician. Only 5 more years of school hopefully..
If I make it that far then I'd love to specialize in pediatric reconstructive surgery. I'm currently a Registered Medical Assistant and Registered Phlebotomist, but don't work as either...
For a job I work at custard shop down the street from my house. Nothing glamorous or fun. Eh Oh well.
Everyone else has very interesting jobs!!

This is so fun!
Right now I am a graphic designer. I work mostly on textbook layout for grades K-6 (all subjects), although I have been working on lots of other projects recently. I also worked on an award winning book cover set last year (but I was the youngin among the design team, so I did more of the back-up design, not the showcase work). Really in my heart I am a sculptor- but that just doesn't pay the bills.
BUT I am finishing my vet pre-requisites right now. I'll be applying to vet school next year-hoping to specialize as an exotics surgeon. So... if anyone knows of any places in WI that need vet assistants (or help in animal care)- I am very hard-working, I have experience with all sorts of animals, and I can use all the experience I can get for my entrance resume.

I'm a summer camp director!! I work for a non-profit youth agency. It's extremely hard work, but I LOVE it.
In high school and college, I was a lifeguard, camp counselor, worked for an afterschool program and worked in an office for a bit.
