One of my ferrets, Sydney, has adrenal disease, and it's inoperable. We took her to the vet yesterday for surgery, hoping the problem would be with the left adrenal gland. No such lukc, it's on the right side and going right through a huge artery. So we're going to try lupron shots for a while, until it's time to say goodbye.
Here is my question. Her brother, Freddy, if very close to her, and we're worried how he'll handle it when she is gone. When that time comes should we get another ferret as company for him? Do they accept new ferrets even?

Weird, and proud of it!

I would think it might be easier to adopt a new ferret before Sydney passes, rather than trying to introduce someone new while Freddy is grieving.  Someone else with more experience might be able to give more details on intros and such, though.

Well wishes to Sydney.

Thanks. I'm really not sure that introducing a new ferret right now would be best. We're trying to keep her as comfortable and stress free as possible.
But thanks for the reply Smiley

IF you got a calmer laid back ferret and kept them seperated for a while and slowly introduce the new ferret to just Freddy then freddy would bond with the new one or at least know the new ferret. That way it wouldn't stress Sydney out to much. If you got a new ferret after Sydney passed it might be hard for Freddy to act interested.

I would think adopting before your syd passes as well, try a rescue as they know most of the personalities and can help you find one that suits him, as well as a possible meeting before you make the commitment to adopt,  you could try an intro after, but he may be confused and wondering where his buddy went and be uninterested or aggressive thinking this new one has something to do with the loss of the old one.

I agree, now would be a better time to introduce a new friend. When sydney does pass he'll have the grief of loosing her and the stress of a new buddy all at once. If he has time to bond with a new buddy before sydney passes it'll help him through the process.
