Pure love... adopt a PEW

« on: August 21, 2008, 12:49:28 PM »

I'm so upset and just have to get this off my chest because I'm here at work and feel uncomfortable talking about it to anyone here.

I just found out one of our foster (Greyhound Crossroads, South Carolina) is dying.  We helped to move her to get to a better vet to have a lump examined on her neck.  She was only with us for two days but we just fell head over heals in love with her.  I have been desperately praying for a miracle.  She went to the very best vet we know who specializes in greyhounds, but the mass cannot be removed and she does not want to try because Wendi is 9 years old and did not come though her recent spay very well.  Wendi is going to live out the rest of her life in foster care.  We don't have an estimate of how long that may be, just until she no longer wants to eat.  The tumor is likely cancer but again, the vet did not feel she was well enough to put her under to get a biopsy.  It doesn't really matter anyway.  Its just going to be about keeping her comfortable for as long as possible.

I'm hoping that I may get to foster her, but there is another woman (who adopted Wendi's mother many years ago) who has been waiting on Wendi with the hopes of adopting her.  Her home is very noisy though with children so I suggested that we would love to foster her as we have a quieter environment.  I love this girl so much and my heart is just breaking that she cannot be saved.  She came from a really horrible situation and was in such bad shape when we got her (hookworms, tapeworms, skin problems, bred too much, etc).  I'm thankful that she is safe from this horrible person, but she has such a limited amount of time left and probably no hope of being adopted because of how serious her health problems are.

If we do get to foster her, I am going to speak to hubby about doing a memorial adoption after she passes so she will be home and we can keep her ashes.  We can't afford her medical treatment (which is why we foster and not adopt) but I really feel a special bond with her.  Please send prayers for Wendi to get to enjoy her final time on this earth, however long that may be.
