to live in a reasonably functional democracy -- Linky  (warning -- quite graphic in text description)

We really take it for granted that we will hold elections and the new leader will take over without bloodshed.  All legal wrangling aside, it really is a very orderly, civilized, respectful process.  We take it for granted we (and our families) will not be harmed for exercising our right to vote or participating in the political process.

All the more reason to make sure you pay attention and participate.  At all levels of government.  Don't discard the privilege that others are literally dying to get.

Oy...It really sheds a different light on spoiled Americans bitching that their votes don't count, doesn't it?

Seriously, each election is important, and lining up to cast your ballot isn't a joke, men and women are dying for what we throw away, that in itself is enough reason to vote.  Don't make light of the importance of a single vote, when people the world over have died for less.

Looks like democracy is lost and violence has won for the time being -- the opposition party is withdrawing Linky . This was after quite a few others were brutally murdered and one of the opposition leaders is currently being held on charges of treason.  This would be the equivalent of charging Howard Dean with treason for wanting somebody else to be president.
