It was stolen between 12:30am and 5:30am.  He knows that because his dad didn't get home until 12:30am and he woke up at 5:30am and went out to go for a ride.  The steering column was locked but it wasn't physically attached to the house.  He said that he kept it unlocked because he was going to go for a ride later last night but he ended up falling asleep and slept until morning.  It kind of sucks because he was going to trade it in today to get a scooter that would go faster and had a bigger seat.  I feel really bad for him because he was really depressed this morning when he called me (he called at 7am).  He filed the police report and everything and he had ALL the info including the title and VIN number plus it's kind of a good thing that the moped shop that sold them only had 3 to sell that were that kind and color.  He lives in a neighborhood that has a lot of alleys so drove down all the alleys and streets that he could that were in the immediate area.

I told him it was probably someone that was drove down the street before (he lives on a tiny one way street that hardly gets traffic) and just saw it then decided to come back later to get it.  I think they loaded it on a truck or something because in order for them to drive it they would have had to break the drive shaft because it was locked.

I just feel so bad because he said it ruined his weekend.  I hope we find it.

I feel so bad for him. I even worry about my motorcycle getting stolen from in front of my warehouse and its heavier than a moped. At the apt we cable out motorcycles together because his weighs almost 500lbs.

Do mopeds have to be plated there? If so there is some hope of recovering it because they wont be able to register it.
Can you notify the title bureau that it was stolen?
As far as the lock it doesn't take much to pop the lock, Im pretty sure you can take the steering column apart and disable the lock.

Hopefully he comes across it. Ive even been places where there were lost posters for cars. He could try that  for his moped.

Good luck

A police report was filed as soon as he noticed it was gone.  He had all the paperwork including the title.  If whoever stole it tries to pawn it or sell it back to the moped shop the VIN number will come up.  Unfortunately in MD mopeds don't have to be plated.

We talked to the owner of the moped shop and he did say that he only sold 6 of those mopeds last year and they won't get anymore of that style.  1 of those mopeds went to NY and 2 of those mopeds he knows exactly where the people live.  So basically there are 3 left including my boyfriend's in this town so I sooner or later we will come across one.  I told my boyfriend to just look for a spray painted moped with a busted out steering column.  His moped was kind of unique because the tires are really fat and the fenders bend over the tires.  The guy at the moped shop said that on those kinds it's REALLY hard to bust out the steering column because they're pretty much solid.  I think whoever stole it put it on a truck and drove away.  Also I think it was someone who lived close and frequently drove up and down the street.

Right now my boyfriend feels a little bit better because he knows that there aren't that many mopeds like that around town.  I think he'll end up putting some posters up or something that it was stolen.  The cops even have a picture of the moped so they know what to look for.  My mom and her boyfriend are on the lookout too.  I know my mom will call me every time she sees a parked moped but at least it will help.

It was funny because when we went into the moped shop, the owner just looked at my boyfriend and said your bike was stolen wasn't it?  He then started to tell my boyfriend how some moped owners got their bikes back after they were stolen.

forkyfork, at least your bike probably needs a key to start it.  I wish they would start doing that to mopeds also.  I also think it's a shame that you can't own anything nice anymore without someone trying to rip it off.  His neighbor told us that on Christmas day someone lifted her sons car up and stole all the rims off of it and left it on blocks (they had big cement blocks in their backyard).
