I need some book suggestions!
«
on:
June 22, 2008, 12:33:35 PM »
I just finished the Twilight series this week and am almost finished with Stephenie Meyer's other book,
The Host
. Since the final book in the Twilight series doesn't come out until August 2, I need something to keep me occupied. Can anyone suggest some must-reads? (I LOVE a good love story, if that helps.
)

I love Phillipa Gregory..she wrote The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Constant Princess...all about the loves and life of Henry iiiv. It's fairly historically accurate, with some exagerations. (And if you saw the movie made based on The Other Boleyn Girl...the book is eighty thousand times better.)
Jennifer Weiner is good too...she wrote Good in Bed, In Her Shoes, Little Earthquakes...good stuff.

I'm currently enjoying Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. He's 9 or 10 books in now, and, while you can read them out of order, they make a whole lot more sense in order. Storm Front is the first one. They're all about a wizard living in modern Chicago, and the troubles he gets into. He has a wicked sense of humor, and the stories are gripping, and not always predictable. Sort of modern fantasy meets mystery.

If you're into fantasy-oriented (though not high fantasy, no elves mincing around, or dwarves, or whatever) I finished reading two great series last year, that you might like. The Song of Ice and Fire Series, by George RR Martin, not finished, but the 4 books that exist are a lot of AWESOME story, told in an entirely unique way, one of the best storytelling stories I have EVER read, and I read a lot. So many plot twists, your head will spin, very sophisitcated style. I can't say enough good about these books.
Another unique great read are the first three books of Kushiel's Chosen series, by Jaquiline Carey. Very moving, high adventure, romantic without being cheesy romance, lots of love, extremely developed and likable characters, lots of plot twists, very sexy, too.

If you haven't read them yet, Eragon and Eldest are really, really good.
I also recommend The Lightning Thief and the other books in the series. Yes, yes, I know they are kids books. Whatever, I love them. I admit it.

Have you tried any Scott Westerfeld? He wrote a book called "Peeps" that reminded me a lot of the summary for The Host.
He also wrote the Ugly Series (Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras) which was pretty good, but science-fictiony a bit. (Not in the way that you have to be smart to understand it, though.

Haha! I have read them! I always use being a middle school language arts teacher as an excuse to shop around the young adult section.
Sometimes the best books are lurking a few age groups back in the bookstore.

I think I have heard of that one. I'll have to look into it when I go to Borders again.
I've been hearing a lot of hype about these titles. Anyone read any of them?

I read the book reviews on Amazon but sometimes people write things that don't make sense. lol.

I just finished
The Host
last night! The ending actually surprised me- which was a surprise in itself because I'm a hard person to surprise. lol. I liked it but definitely not as intense as the Twilight series, IMO. I cannot wait for
Breaking Dawn
! (About a month until it's released now, I think!!!)

I didn't read these yet but I really want too...I saw this series about the wizard of oz but they're written in the wicked witch's point of view instead of Dorothy's. The first one is called Wicked I think.
If anyone has read them I'd like to see how they are

My friends are obsessed with
Wicked
. It is a wickedly (pun intended
) popular book. I tried to read it about a year or two ago and got about a quarter of the way through but couldn't catch on to it. I'm not sure though if that was because I didn't like the book or just because I was really busy with school at the time.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plumm novels. I can't believe I didn't think of them...the first one is One For The Money...really funny read. Kind of a mystery, but a good one (can you tell I'm not a mystery fan). I was in Borders tonight and saw that the new one is out and it made me think of this thread.

omg where to begin??
Dresden Files was mentioned - definite read list, they're really good and fun to read
Janet Evanovich and the Stephanie Plum stuff is hysterical and wonderfully written - warning, pick it up and plan on not doing ANYTHING else for a few hours, or till ya finish the book whichever comes first
Kim Harrison's series about Rachel Morgan
http://books.google.com/books?id=K9kjkbj9m0oC&printsec=frontcover&dq=inauthor:Kim+inauthor:Harrison&ei=k-5gSPqbCIHksQOAiYW_DQ&sig=ogE1KWq7kLSzoA_jg6TnEAb_tAk#PPP1,M1
that shows you a bunch of the first book to get a taste of her work
let's see...
for serious books, Eat Love Pray was actually very well done and an enjoyable read. It is NOT a "lets shove god down your throat" type book...it's about self discovery and learning.
Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series is also really good - if a bit racey hehehe definite PG13 rating on this one, maybe even leaning towards a good strong R rating too later in the series
Wm Mark Simmons Half Life Chronicles is really good and fun to read....

Oh yes, Kim Harrison is a must read! Laurel K. Hamilton does 2 series, not just Anita. Her Merideth Gentry series is good, too.
