To a loving rat you are the world

« on: July 03, 2008, 12:26:25 PM »

There used to be an evil PetsPlus near my house that was absolutely TERRIBLE! The owner would freeze her sick rats/hamsters/etc amd feed them to snakes rather than pay for a vet to take care of them or have them humanely PTS. It was dirty, her rats were ALWAYS sick, she was breeding genetically weak rats, there were mites/fleas/lice - IT WAS AWFUL.
However, there was one good aspect to the store - a worker there who really cared about these animals. When he could afford to, he wuld take the sick animals to the vet since his boss wouldn't, and he always treated the animals nice.
Well guess what? Now he owns the store! He fired everyone (thank god) and got the place cleaned up. All the rats have been treated for their mites/lice/etc, but sadly one of the male ratties had to be PTS b/c he had a respiratory infection left untreated for too long. But he asked me if there's any advice I have for him, and I told him to check this site for anything when he had a question. He wrote down the website, and asked for my email and stuff so he can ask me for advice too (lol he calls me a rat queen) but I told him his best bet is thru this website
It's just so nice to see all the animals happy and healthy, with only 10 mice to a cage instead of 50, and not cramming different species of hamsters together in cgae for them to fight. It doesn't smell there any more, and all the animals are healthy!
It's just so good to see a pet store with some morals now!

That's awesome news!!  I went into Petland not too long ago, and the store that I was in definitely needs to be shut down.  YUCK!

Yay! That's awesome. There's a Luv-A-Pet near me that is horrid. All small animals have fleas and mites and the employees pick up all rodents by the tip of the tail, the birds have bitten their feathers away because of boredom, and it is filthy. Uggghh. It's so disturbing.

"The owner would freeze her sick rats/hamsters/etc and feed them to snakes rather than pay for a vet to take care of them or have them humanely PTS."

This is my cheapo ex-employer right there. If it was sick, freeze it. If it was injured, freeze it. On my last day there I rescued a beat up hammie she would have frozen to death.. She's living happily with my neighbours now and recovering nicely. My boss seemed to think that a 15 gallon tank was suitable for almost 10 adult rats so I was constantly making room for new tanks, grouping hamsters properly, etc. She threw opposite sexes in together, too. Smart ain't she? Amazingly the rats never had rittens. Hamsters did all the time though. Angry

She only cared about expensive animals or ones that generated alot of sales. Wench.
