Uhm, first she shows a cage with a mommy rat and her babies in it, okay....fine. The mommy rat gets out of the cage after the lady opens the door. The lady opens the third cage with a male rat in it....female rat walks into the cage.

Why is this lady so dumb  ? She has a whole string of videos on youtube.

Moondust, write the letter to expertvillage.com!  Smiley

Hmmm...my favs?

"At 6 weeks their eyes/ears open and they will start eating rat food and then they are basically on their own"

and in the Health section *giggle*

Rats don't generally get sick (better let all the rats and owners posting in Health Care know this one!)

Keeping their eyes clean of goop is important..no mention of porphyrin or what it means.

They seem to NEED wood in their cage to keep their teeth short from chewing

and you can brush their teeth with water and gauze on your finger....why??  Someone doens't like healthy orange teeth?

And the skin irritations....bwwahaahahah!!!  Rat can get skin irritations from dyes and perfumes and their bedding that can cause bald spots and their hair to fall out.     Not those little mite-y creatures causing this?

Wow...we should seriously start writing letters. This lady is misinforming people. Don't try to teach things to people when you don't know very much about them yourself...

Thanks for the correction Shelaigh, I was in the middle of something and clearly didn't pay enough attention...not that it was worth much of it! *headdesk*  I'll draft a letter tonight, because that's outrageous.

I left a comment on it.

Some one needs to take all of these poor rats away from this woman, and all her videos need to be deleted.

She also claims that rats are low maintenance. Bologna, my rats are just as needy as my rabbits. Out of all my pets, the cats are the lowest maintenance...which is still much higher maintenance than a pet fish, lol.

She also says her rats are rex rats because on the female, when you rub her fur in the opposite direction, she has a different color fur under her top coat. UGH  confused2.

if you go to their main website there is a contact form at the bottom.. i left a note there.

was anyone else tempted to flag them as animal abuse?  improper care might as well be abuse.

oh i found the actual page for all of these on expert village.. this is what it had to say about this woman:

"
About the Expert

Laura Fitzgerald has been an animal lover her entire life. Having her first pet rat at the age of 5 (after rescuing it from the snake food chain). Growing up on a 200 acre horse farm in New Jersey, Laura raised many pet rats, even wild barn rats as pets. After graduating High School Laura attended Sussex County Vo-Tech and received her license as an animal health technician and worked as a veterinarian assistant for 5 years. Laura moved to Florida in 1988 and worked for a Vet that specialized in exotic and small animals for 6 years. Laura later opened her own Exotic animal business which she currently still operates."

What really irks me is that she's letting a mother who JUST gave birth wander around with an intact male, thinking the mother can't get pregnant again until six weeks later. That's just plain ignorance.

Seriously.....I've had rats in my home since 1999, and when I started posting here a few weeks ago, I thought I knew everything...WRONG!  There is always something new to learn about ratties, and this lady needs to start from the beginning.

Angry

No...you can't. And like Happy-RAT said, you'd be surprised on how much more you have to learn. I'm not as mad that she doesn't know what she's doing, I'm really mad that she's acting like an "expert", and so uneducated people are going to think that she knows what she's talking about, and they're going to go by that information when taking care of their own rats. And if she really cared about the welfare of rats, she definitely wouldn't be ENCOURAGING people to breed them!  Angry

Where are people sending letters/e-mails to? I'd like to write one...

The title of this thread made me laugh. She is an idiot.  Yellow Cute Laugh

I've seen her videos before, and they make me mad. What a moron! The female and male rat being so close together is bound to spell trouble. Stupid person.

Yes, I'm sure she'll feel quite welcome here, after being called a moron and an idiot. Wink

I can understand people's frustration.  Some of the statements made in those videos are facepalm inducing, but this woman needs to be educated, not insulted.

If she thinks that "large cage" is all that, then she obviously hasn't kept up in the rat world. She probably researched years ago and never bothered to update herself, so she thinks her "old ways" are correct?

Regardless, these videos still need to be taken down. Maybe someone on here can make new videos with CORRECT information, and submit them?
