Me and my mom were standing by the baboon exibit and all the sudden, the male jumped on one of the females and started mating! We just stood there in shock that they would do it in public with all these people watching and not at a more.. private time. Then we left and went to the reptile house and we were watching the rattlesnakes because they were the only animals moving in the cages and THEY were in the middle of mating with each other as well! OMG! So we watched them for awile.. it was so interesting because the male was curled around the female and he looked like he was seizuring or something. Then he'd rub towards her rattle with his tail. Never seen anything like it. Before we left we visited the gazelles and safari animals and the wild pigs were courting, with the male trying to jump on the female but she backed into a corner and squealed at him. Last time I went to the zoo the zebras were mating. Some little boy asked him mom what they were doing and she's like "They're giving piggy back rides!" LOL! I understand it's a natural thing.. but today it was just.. weird. Worry

Roll Eyes  Animals really could care less who is watching! When the instinct to reproduce is there, there's not much you can do! Our male chimp will masturbate in front of guests, he doesn't care. When one of our female tigers is in heat, they mate all of the time! That's why nearly every animal in the zoo is on some form of birth control or another! Whether it is the human pill (chimps), an implant, or having an animal fixed (our male tiger is vasectomized), we try to prevent all unwanted babies.

The funny thing in our zoo is the sloth bear male who likes his log a little bit too much. Its fun explaining to a group of tour kids that he is just scratching his tummy! Now if they were my kids on the other hand, I'd tell em the truth, the animals are making babies. Nuff said!

People always talk about how odd it is for animals to "do it" right in the open.....but I honestly take the opposite standpoint....

WHY DO WE JUST STAND THERE AND WATCH???

Afterall, it would be private if we weren't standing there staring.

LOL

We didn't mean to look.. I was actually commenting on the male's fur because it looked like he got in a fight with a crimping iron! LOL! Then.. it just happened withing a matter of 2 seconds and he was done.

Well isn't that just typical.

Sounds like you had a fun-filled day at the zoo! LOL... maybe they knew you were coming and thought they'd put on a good show for ya? Hehehe...

So... if a sloth bear mates with a log... then you get... a slog bear?  A sloth blog?    I have no idea....

LOL....pffft! LOL again! This board cracks me up. I can picture me and my close friends joking like this. You guys are great! And maybe they are telling us spring is coming, baby making time!  Cheeky LOL, my experience having to do with anything mating wise today was the male box turtle ravaging the female, she didn't want it, she finally just closed her shell up completely, I felt all bad that she was getting abused like that, so i separated them. HA-HA! Evil man turtle!

I'm not joking, it was REALLY quick! It was less than 5 seconds.. not sure if he even accomplished anything in that amount of time.

Ah, so now wait... if a box turtle mates with a log, you get a wooden box?   Cheeky

I think I'm getting the hang of this!

Or maybe not still.

And Heather, one sure way to tell... did he turn on the TV and try to send the female for a beer?   Cheeky
