I had a revelation!!
«
on:
May 03, 2003, 12:25:38 AM »
I've been depressed lately, and getting progressively more stressed out. I have been getting more and more disillusioned with Biology, and any of the careers involved. The further I delve into the subject, the less I enjoy it. I am starting to think that I may not actually want to work with animals as a career. This is very confusing, as all that I have ever wanted to do was work with animals. Sure, my focus skipped around...If you had asked me three years ago I would have told you that I wanted to be a canine behaviorist. A year ago, a field herpetologist. A week ago, a venom researcher.
My revelation was this: I don't HAVE to pursue an animal-related career!
Okay, DUH, right? I don't know why this didn't occur to me a long time ago. *chuckles*
After rolling this around in my mind for awhile, I wrote to the culinary school in San Francisco! I may have exploded a bottle of Alfredo sauce in the microwave last night, but I really enjoy cooking, and I think this could be a really good thing. Other than my job, I'm already far less stressed, and feeling better about life in general!
Ah well, thanks for listening to my ramble. It's over now. ^_^

Your issues may have been like mine..
I have a degree in textile design which took me longer than planned and was very hard work, then I worked for about a year in the design industry, which I discovered I hated but felt like I was wasting those years of hard work, I started working with people with a disability on the side to bring in extra money and LOVED it.
6 years later, I work with children and adult with a disability doing recreational work. I still have my creative endeavours on the side but theres no money involved and enjoy this balance far more.
Sometimes what the reality is in the career you have chosen, can very different than you'd imagined..
Good luck in your career change..hope it's the right one for you

I'm just waiting for that revelation to come to me
Lucky you, I'm glad you found something you can be interested in
Urbanratgirl, I'm actually a graphic design major who WISH I was textile. Then again, if I was a textile major I'm sure I wouldn't think it would be fun
Shoot.

Wolfchan I can relate to that. I've ahd so many interests and
don't
know which I want to persue. I'm thinking horticulture because I like working with plants, watching them grow, etc. Plus I could grow my own hydroponic tomatoes at home!
EDIT: I meant don't, not do.

Oh, come on. Whenever anybody talks about growing anything hydroponically and at home, it's never tomatoes.

I can relate to that too, I had changed my major so many times... from Russian to Graphic Design to Gerontology to Elementary Education and now Psychology... but I know that Psych is what I truly want to do... it just takes some time to find what you like the most, and what you'd be happy doing as a career. It's a relief knowing that I have finally found what I wanna do. Plus my parents don't want to kill me anymore
