Anyone has ferrets?
«

I'm just curious, I've been reading about ferrets online and wanted to know what your opinion was. What do you like about them? What are some of the "cons" of ferrets? Special requirements?
Then some specific questions. What are the differences between males and females? I understand that they're somewhat like rats, in that that males are larger in size, lazier, etc but anything else? Do they smell more too?
What about caging? What kind of cage do you use and what should be the minimum size for a single ferret? It would depend on the amount of time they're outside the cage too right? How many hours a day do your ferrets come out of their cage? Do they free range?
Then of course the most important, how do you manage to keep ferrets and rats together? Obviously they could never meet right? So is it a big deal keeping them separated, would using common sense and being careful do?
How do they get along with other animals? I have a small dog (pomeranian) who can be both active and lazy depending on his mood. I think he might actually enjoy the company of an inquisitive ferrets but I don't know.
I'm not sure what I want to do yet, I just wanted to get an idea. I want to get a ferret but my sister wants to get a kitten. I would personally rather get an older cat than a kitten but we'll see. Anyways, anything you can tell me would be great! Thanks
EDIT: Hmmm, now why would I say "cage" instead of a "cat"?

I have one... I like them because my mother used to have one when I was younger - and I liked that one. They're very sweet tempered animals, and VERY excitable and playful. You have to clean their cages a LOT, just so ya know - or they will get incredibly smelly.

Males are more laid back (I think). Not too much of a difference as far as I can tell. They ALL smell regardless of gender, lol.. but especially an unneutered/undescented male - they REEK.

Get a HUGE cage. My cage is 6 feet tall. Get one as big as you possibly can - they need the space. They should get free roam for at least 3-4 hours a day, bare minimum. They aren't like rats - they are more like cats and dogs that need as much roam time as they can possibly get. Mine often stays out most of the day except when we're asleep. (they need to stay supervised - they are VERY curious and make HUGE messes)

They've never met one another.. I don't ever have the rats out or their cage open if the ferret is out. (or the cats for that matter). My ferret has sniffed the rat cage before, but that's about it.

He gets along GREAT with my three cats... be careful about the cats though, as they may not know the ferret isn't something to eat. My ferret was raised with the cats when they were youngish. (not itty kittens of course, because then HE may have tried eating THEM!) He really aggravates the cats though.. always pouncing and nipping them.
Here he is licking Josie's head:
Last word to the wise. A ferret may stink - but the LESS often you give him a bath, the LESS he will stink. I know that sounds weird, but it's true!!!

Ferrets almost always develop Adrenal (sp? Is that even the right word? Something like that) disease somewhere around the age of 5-6. This is 100% curable, with surgery and what not, but around this time could end up costing you up to 3k, pending.
One way to prevent it is not to spay/neuter so bloody young the way Marshall Farms does. That's the big thing that's prevented me from getting a ferret, cuz I've wanted one for years, but I can't afford a surgery/treatment that expensive all in one pop feesably.
And that's about all I have to add...

I raised ferrets for 15 years, and after my precious died knew I could just not have one more!
Imagine a litter of puppies, Ten 2 year olds on speed and a stuffed animal!! That is the average ferret!
They all are very unique but have high energy and a very high attention requirement. All 3 of my babies free ranged after being litter trained and had their own room, but they were 10 times the work of raising my non-furry kids!!!
Personality +++++ no more so then my Ratties, just more high strung! I had one baby girl (lived to be 13) that was always mellow and cuddle bunny! But she tore all my plants to shreds?
Never really had an odor problem with care fresh and all 3 were spayed or neutered. But, I agree have to keep clean becuase of size!!! like having a puppy (lab, husky) in the house!!
Sorry this was really long winded! They are a delight! But so much energy and much more ( I think) mischevious (sp?) then sweet little rattie babies! I stop at the DDFL just to love on all the soft furries and here in Denver there is a HUGE amount of Adoptees!! If you decide please adopt!! They are not as mellow as kittys!! But they are not as withdrawn at CATS!!
Yes, they do have a problem with adrenal cancer, but again, proper vet care and diet can eliminate that!!! LOL

Sorry! I am trying to work at the same time and did not pay enough attention to all the wonderful advice above!!!!
The biggest reason they have Adrenal issues is that Marshall Farms and the rest of the bad boys do a chemical neuter! Not ever good in any animal!!! I also agree that to many baths = BAD SMELL!! and deoderants for Ferrets are BAD!!!
As far as other animals?? My Dog loved all of them, my cat loved the male
and hated the 2 females??? I think so much depends on how patient and watchful you are! How is your Pommy with other animals??
As far as ratties I would say no!!! Rats are food to ferrets in the wild!!
Size of cage I agree with NutKitty! The bigger the better, Mine had a large room! But at least 6'X3'X4'
Let us know what you decide! And if it is a go....Please adopt, more patience but well worth it!

OK....hi
Ummmmm, ferrets are GREAT if you are VERY willing to spend time with it and clean up after it on a VERY regular basis. I adore my two ferrets and wouldn't trade them for the world, BUT had I known how much they were going to smell, how much of a mess they can (AND DO) make, how much trouble they can get into and how much time they demand I probably would never have gotten one.
I read up on ferrets for a year before I ever got one and I thought I knew everything there was to know, but book smarts are a LOT different than real life smarts and I was not prepared for so much work.
To be honest, I have 2 dogs right now, 4 cats, 6 rats, a fish and these two ferrets and I will be completely honest and tell you the ferrets are more high maintanence than ANY of my other animals.
I am lucky, I have TONS of time and LOVE animals (specially my weasels), but they are not little cute pocket pets.

IMO, the males are much more stubbern, they will do anything to get their way. They also smell more than the females due to their usual marking of things. The females are more likely to be small, gentile, and enjoy sneaking away from you into TINY spaces. MAKE SURE THEY ARE NEUTERED OR SPAYED or you will regret it. The slight musk scent that you smell on most is amplified by 100 if they are not. The scent glands being removed also helps a bit, but the altering makes a HUGE difference.

This is all IMO stuff, but I have this one: (its 36" x 24" x 48")
I bought that cage for my first ferret as a single ferret home.
Regarding the cage size and time outside of it, ferrets are quite active and intelligent and they NEED as much space in their cage as you can provide them with. Mine are out for at least 4 hours a day and they run free range when I am playing with them and if I am working on school stuff I close the quest bedroom door and they play in here with me while I am on the computer.

FERRETS KILL RATS!!! Be VERY careful, even if the ferret or rat cage is closed they can STILL get to one another. Trust me, when I first got my rats 695 I had it on the floor in the same room with the ferrets and when they were out they went right to the rat cage and when the poor, trusting ratties stuck their hands and noses out the ferrets attacked. There was blood and screaming though thankfully no one was really hurt. BE CAREFUL and use common sense.

Mine LOVE the cats, dogs AND each and every person they meet.

Thanks for the advice! I'm giving a serious thoughts wether or not this will work for me, and while other websites on ferret info is great it's hard to get unbiased opinion you know? I also need to find out what my situation will be once I graduate, and it's good to know how much work they'll take. I'll be sure to make sure I'm ready for that.
They'll DEFINITELY be neutered/spayed there is no doubt. So what's the good age to get them fixed then, to avoid Adrenal?
About where to get one. I'm talking to someone in the area about rescues and such so we'll see. I feel the same way about buying ferrets from petstores as buying rats from petstores so I do want to avoid that.
Since rats will never meet the ferret, the major issue is my dog Zippo. He loves my rats, he pestered a little dog who was visiting once, but most of the times he's very curious and enjoys the company of other animals. He sleeps most of the day when no one's home, and tends be very lazy, so I would be worried about the ferrets bothering him too much. He's very gentle with the rats, very patient for such a small dog.
So should they be descented? Do they automaticcally get descented when sold/adopted?

pick up the book Ferrets for Dummies. BEST book out there...
and get the ferrets fixed before puberty, is all I can say really... you don't want to see them when they hit that.
and I agree... I've kept reptiles almost all my life, and I always thought THEY were high maintenance (veiled chameleon namely)... I thought, Oh.. ferrets will be a breeze... well boy was I wrong, LOL! it's not as much the care, it's the constant cleaning up after Spam.
they say if you're unexperienced with ferrets, to get a baby first, so that they bond to you, and they tire out easier. adults are non stop when they have their out time. I made that mistake, though.. I decided to get a rescue marshall farms ferret.. who was badly covered in fleas, fur missing, over a year old and his shots well overdue. he nips still, I've NEVER been able to break him of that habit, but at least he doesn't BITE anymore. Also, he never truly bonded to me as I thought they could.. he refuses to come up to me when it's playtime, instead he'll run off and do his own thing. he'll lick me but only while I"m holding him.... honestly, my rats are more affectionate than him, but I don't blame him at all. the first year of his life was spent inside a tiny rabbit "cage" that half the floor was covered by a litter box.

oops sorry, didn't read all the questions.. LOL
alright, my ferret's cage is a midwest ferret playpen, with added hammocks and added levels to the cage. these cages can be really dangerous for ferrets without the added hammocks.. if they fell from the top, it could be deadly. the cage is slightly smaller than my martin's Ruud cage for the rats (the cages are side by side).
also, descenting is 100% UNNECESSARY!!!!!! if you wind up adopting a ferret, more than likely it's already neutered as well as descented. marshall farms ferrets you can tell by two blue tattooed dots on their one ear. one dot is to show it was fixed, and the other was to show it's descented. another farm does the dot-tattoo thing, but it's on the opposite ear of marshall ferrets.. I can't recall the name of that place right now, though, since marshalls are so bleeding common!!
you should hold the ferret, while someone else holds back the dog, for initial intros. my ferret does NOT get along with ANY cats in either my mom's house, or this house. he wants to play, they want him to die.

My friend has two ferrets. She originally got one, but he always seemed so sad that she finally went and got him a rescue buddy-- which really made him perk up. They really are fun, balls of energy, but I agree with the maintanence. Those things make messes that I didn't even know they could. They get into absolutely everything... I also noted that my friend's ferrets aren't that personal. I think that has to do with their nurture (the first was a friend of the family's petstore ferret when they had to move and the second was a rescue and who knows his past).
Adrenal, I don't know too much about. I do know that at the rescue we went to, they had a really sickly ferret who when he got adrenal was thrown out the window (
) by his "loving owners"
He got surgery at the rescue and was on the mend.Anyway, ferrets are weird... I swear they aren't of this world...

I didn't read all the posts, so I am probably repeating someone else...
I DID notice someone reccomending getting the Ferrets For Dummies book, and I second that. I HIGHLY reccomend that book to anyone thinking about a ferret, or even someone who already has one. I learned a lot from that book!
I have 2 ferrets- I got them almost a year ago. Unfortunatly they are Marshall's ferrets (you can tell by a blue dot in thier ear) but I am the second owner for both of them, so I consider them rescues... which they kinda are.
Mine are both decented and neutered. I know that neutering also helps with the ferret-smell. Spaying is a must for females- if they go into heat and don't breed, they stay in heat and eventually can die from it... (There's technical stuff to that, but you catch the drift)
Basically they are like hyper kittens on speed all their life- but I love them to pieces!! If I have a bad day at work, I either take the rats out so they can give me kisses- or I just go watch ferret-playtime and laugh my butt off!
My ferrets are approx. 2 and 3 years (I really don't know, since I'm 2nd owner) and neither of them really cuddle. Of course this MAY have to do with thier previous home, because I know a girl who's got 2 that are under a year and one fell asleep in my arms...I wanted to steal it.... anyways-- Just like rats they tend to calm down as they get older, and my 3 year old ferret is kinda doing that a little bit. Dosen't cuddle as much as I'd like him to, but sometimes he humors me.
My ferrets and rats don't know eachother exist. They never meet, not even for fun to see if they'd even get along. I'm too afraid of the instincts that the ferrets will have, so I just don't do it.
Ferrets need LOTS of playtime. I have a big bathroom that they get to play in. It's got ferret toys all over it- and there's a nice hole in the carpet where one tried to dig and chew under it. I can't ferret proff my whole house, but this bathroom is the size of a small bedroom, so it works. They get to romp around in there. My dog gets to play with them too, but only close supervision. She loves them, but when they get under the bathroom rug, she dosen't know they are there, so we have to keep her from stepping on them. Otherwise *my* dog is fine with them.
My ferrets need thier toenails clipped and ears cleaned once a week, so I highly reccomend learning how to do it yourself if you don't already know how. They get bathed once a month- or when they're really really stinky (which is actually about once a month or a little longer)
I have that 6 foot tall Super Pet cage for them. They love it.
They are litter box trained, but if you don't clean the box at least every other day they poop somewhere else because the box isn't up to par.
Thier metabolism is also pretty quick so I keep a feeder bin in there with food all the time.
I have also found that my ferrets tend to like cat toys over ferret toys, which is fine by me, because ferret toys are more expensive anyways.
Because thier previous owners never gave them treats, I've had a hard time finding anything they will eat aside from their food. The younger one I got when he was still under a year old and I can get him to eat ferret treats out of my hand, but the older one has no clue.
They need yearly distemper shots. Rabies isn't required in all states, but if a ferret bites someone and you can't prove it's had rabies shots, in most states they will automatically euthanize the ferret to make sure. Yeh, it's dumb, but if you get them rabies vaccinated you avoid that.
Anyways- I love ferrets-- I am glad I got them as a pet, I'll never regret it... Jeremy says that now that he's had them for a pet (he's always wanted them) he dosen't think he wants them in the future, because of all the playtime they require. I don't know if he's serious or not, because he loves them so much he might just give in and get more later. (Actually we're thinking about a 3rd anyways! lol)
Okay I think i rambled enough...

If you do decide to get a ferret, rescue one!
After my pouched rat passed on (sniff, I miss him so) my boyfriend and I decided to get a "kid" of our own. We did a ton of ferret research online. We had both always wanted one. Finally we contacted a shelter, drove out there, and got one.
BAD - The shelter was someone's private home, and on the surface it looked great. I should of suspected something when the old lady wouldn't let us see the ferret room, though. She went in and brought back out one ferret, and as soon as I saw him I was in love. We paid her an 'adoption donation' of $125 and brought him home. By the time we got home, we noticed he was really underweight, had tons of fleas, and a respiratory infection.
GOOD - Flea shampoo, meds, and good food solved everything, and a month later he was a perfect ferret. He is friendly and playful, he'll dance around all day and take naps in my lap. He did come from a bad place, but I always feel good about knowing I got him out of that nasty situation. I don't regret taking him home for a second. He's awesome!
So basically, you will feel great if you rescue one, but know what to look for in a bad shelter, I didn't notice all bad signs until later, but at least we got him out of there!

Thanks so much guys! I think I definitely have a better idea about wether or not a ferret would fit my lifestyle and if I would be able to properly care for him/her. I would wait until everything is set in my life to decide if I would get one or not, to make sure I have enough time. I think I can definitely handle the high maintenance part, I just want to make sure I do right by him/her, and also my family agrees. They might think a cat/kitten would be better
There is only one petstore that I would even consider getting any animals from, but even they get their ferrets from Marshall and I've heard some very bad things about them. Other than that, I have yet to see any stores that really care for them properly and I would definitely feel uncomfortable buying one from them. I think I found a rescue in my area so I'll keep my eyes open, I'm sure I can still get a fairly young and friendly one from a rescue.

Babyblue- I'd definatly rescue one instead of buying one. Even if you get a health problem, you'd probably get the same thing from a store bought ferret- but at least you'd know that you'd rescued a life.
Both mine came from families who bought them and THEN decided it wasn't the best pet for them.
Family #1 bought the ferret for the son who just had to have one. Within a year, the ferret was too smelly for the house, so out to the CARPORT he went- for a year before I got him!!! I doubt he saw people every day, much less got clean food and water. When I got him there was 2 days worth of food left in his feeder bin, no extra food, and when I asked what kind of food it was they couldn't remember and said "oh whatever kitten food is on sale at the grocery" I guess they were thinking that I'd be like "Oh, ferrets are easy!" but in reality I had done my studying and was furious. Bandit (the ferret) was also extremly skinny- and although he's gained weight, he's still small for a ferret.
Oscar was a Christmas present-- we adopted him in JULY when the owner decided she didn't want him anymore. At least this one was being fed a premium kitten food, and she gave me her ferrets for dummies book, but it's still pretty pathetic to get a ferret for Christmas and then give it up 7 months later.
Anyways- not that my stories are encouraging, but I'd still rather rescue a ferret and give him a good home than buy one from a store...

I love my ferret. I rescued him too... but it wasn't a bad thing. just he got out and the neighbors thought he was an opossum, and the land lord said that they couldn't keep him anymore.
He doesn't have a cage at all... he free-ranges in the house.. has the whole house to get lost in. Well, it's only a two bedroom apartment. Dominic is actually really calm, at least right now... and he LOVES to cuddle. all the time, he's just a little cuddle-bug. He plays a little, but mostly just likes to find new places to sleep.

We have three bad weasels. LOL They're great! I had claled tons of rescues, but there were problems trying to adopt from them. I finally found one somewhat close to my house, but the woman that runs it didn't have any available ferrets at the time. They were all older or sickly, and it is not their policy to adopt out animals that are not healthy. Anyway, I sadly told her to keep my name in mind. I'll be darned if she didn't call me a day or two later. We were supposed to pick up two ferrets, but ended up with three. It's a long story. Anyway, I didn't have to pay an adoption fee. I did however have to pay for 3 vet visits, vaccines, and then a splenectomy for JJ. It was money WELL spent. They're all wonderful, and they make life fun. Ferrets aren't an "easy" pet, but if you have them, know about them, and take care of them properly they are absolutely awesome! It's like having a business of kids. LOL
