My mom pulled out the digital camera just in time for this one.   Peta the rat and Wheezer the dog.



(And don't worry -- Wheezer thinks they're puppies, and her personal philosophy is "very, very careful!"... and of course she's never allowed around them without supervision. Just wanted to make that clear before I got jumped on.  )

my departed mama would have had none of it.  she was dead set against any dog noses in her face or around her (full grown) babies.  she bit a dachsund and my sister's black lab on the nose.  (i honestly never thought a nose could bleed so much)  and any time i took her to a petstore, i had to keep the curious dogs away for the dog's sake.  "i'm not too worried about your dog gettin my girls, ma'am, i'm worried about my girl biting your dog! she still thinks she's a mama rat protecting her babies."

When I lived with my parents, I tried to let the family dog see the rat, Marble.  Marble grabbed her whiskers, Lass shrieked and thrashed her head about, sending Marble sailing across the bed.  Lass went after him and I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't have gotten there first.  She was in the 'that's alright' posture that she takes when someone accidently steps on her tail.  So I don't know it she was going to apologize to the rat or exact her revenge.  I've never tried to let the rat and dog be friends after that, though.
