I personally like the idea. I just finished my research paper on animal cruelty...and part of it was about dairy cows being forced to be milked all the time, and made it so they produce 100lbs of milk a day instead of the 10lbs a day that they are supposed to....more info here.... http://www.factoryfarming.com/dairy.htm

Once inside, the animals receive a measure of feed, have their udders washed and sterilised by a robot arm and computer-guided suction cups attach themselves to their teats.

That is disturbing on so many levels...

Yep. we're going to have a lot of lonely farmboys getting themselves mutilated by the automilkers. Takes 'em out of the gene pool, though.

What's cruel is taking their babies away from them... the milk is meant to go to them.  Undecided

I'll never be for animal exploitation of any kind, but steps toward making their lives less horrible is at least a step in the right direction. I just hope they don't stop there.

Its a cycle...its not like its going to waste. O.o And so long as theyre milked they pretty much keep producing dont they?Though back in the olden days you could just let the cow have her calf and just milk along side what she gives the calf i believe..Thats an interesting bit though, the more the need for milk grows, the more that is produced. But this is coming from a cheese addicted 1/4 Italian pasta loving solid mutt whose has an oddly primitive set mind and is based simply on nothing more than "Dont kill for the sake of killing".
But really....imagine having udders full of milk almost dragging the ground drying up... x.x
And who knows, maybe with this machine they wont have such a need to be pumped up on stuff to increase milk production.

working on a dairy farm part time myself, I think it's a great invention! But we only milk 40 cows so we wouldn't need one of those. Note to Grace Jr and Sonya:  Drink Oakhurst milk. That's where our milk goes.

Do you still work there?  That's cool, I think...  And don't worry, I already buy Oakhurst.  If I remember correctly, it's essentially growth-hormone free, right?  There was some reason I chose that over Hood, although I don't remember why...  My Mom buys hood though, because she likes those new light block bottles.  I don't drink the milk (just use it for cereal and cooking), but I see no difference in taste.

So, are all the Oakhurst farms smaller ones, or are there still larger "corporate type" ones around here?  If I could find reasonably priced, organic, locally produced milk, I would SO buy it!  Think they'll be coming out with any organic milk??   Cheeky

Yes Grace, I do still work there. That's how I get all the hay for the buns at work. It's my BF's family farm in Falmouth. "Zacharias Holstiens".  I just do fill in work there now but I used to work every Sunday but 6 days a week working was more than I could handle after 2 years of it. You're right about the artificial growth hormones. We don't use them, none of the farms for Oakhurst use them. I don't think they only use small farms though. Probably some big ones in the mix.
Have you ever had raw milk? We drink it all the time, it's free so why not and taste pretty much the same. But I have to put it in a regular milk jug or the kids won't drink it. LOL

I don't think I'd like milk straight from the cow... I prefer to drink fat free milk and I like it cold.

Yep.  My dad's sister married a man whose family owned a dairy farm.  We used to visit them quite a bit, and I've had raw milk, and cream from the cooling tank and all kinds of stuff.

I've got to say: I don't care for raw milk AT ALL!  LOL!  My cousins grew up with it for the same reasons you did, and used it on their cereal, and to drink and everything.  Ugh.  I couldn't handle the taste at all.  On cereal I didn't notice it as much, but to drink it?  They used to bring a large bottle of it to our house because my cousins wouldn't drink the stuff from the store.  LOL!~

What I think is really really cruel is premariam horses and foals.
  Sad
They have the mother horse stand in a stall and give birth. then they ship the baby off to some restaurant in England or some where to be eaten. the mother is immedentally bred again right after birth. The horses are made to stand up in a stall too narrow for them to turn around or lay down. there is food and water in frount of them, but they rarley get to go outside. There is a thing like the macines that milk the cows to milk the horses for antivenom and they do other things.
I feel sssooo bad for these horses Cry the babies don't even get a chance to live Cry and the mothers never get a break form carring a baby Cry!
There are rescue opperations out there to save the foals and trying to save the mares. Smiley
I am donating money to this cause. the cows thing is kinda mean too. I think that hand milking is better for the cow.

Are you talking about Premarin?  Where they breed the horses for a constant source of estrogen (taken from the urine while pregnant), to use as a hormone replacement therapy in women going through menopause.

For those unfamiliar, here's a couple links:
http://www.premarin.org/
http://www.premarin.com/ - By the makers of Premarin
http://my.athenet.net/~nrsprntg/stpindex.html

Also RatLovin, although hand milking is probably ideal, it is definetly NOT practical in many dairy farms these days because of the large number of cows.  With large farms, considering the alternatives are being hooked up to a milking machine, or being able to be milked at your leisure, I'd DEFINETLY choose the self milking option.

Ratlovinblonde, why is it worse when done to horses? That is what happens to a lot of dairy cows too, they are kept pretty much constantly pregnant so they are always producing, and their babies are taken away to become veal or more dairy cows. Just as cruel really.
