Trying this... will see if I am capable of figuring it out the first time. :) Here is one of my cutie babies, at about 1 1/2 weeks old. :) Becca Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: Hedgehaven on December 11, 2005, 12:04:20 AM AWWW *dies from cute overdose*
That's one adorable wee beebee owie! Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: Goosemoose on December 11, 2005, 01:58:24 AM Aww that's so cute. Does it have any feet, or are they little stumps right now?
Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: taku on December 11, 2005, 07:57:13 AM I've never seen a baby hedgehog. Are they born with the quills? Forgive me, I'm hedgie naive. It's so cute!!! Are the babies grumpy sometimes like the adults and do they play like babies? I'm so full of naive hedgie questions.
Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: dzmeadows on December 11, 2005, 08:52:50 AM She does have feet, the legs are rather short and stubby when they are little, but they are there. :) In fact, one of her front paws is up along her face, and a back leg is sticking up on the other side of her face.
They aren't exactly born with quills, when they are born, their skin is very swollen and covers their quills. However, once they are cleaned up and start drying off, their quills start sticking through. Typically within an hour of birth, they have a full covering of little quill tips. Baby hedgehogs go through several "quilling" phases, where they lose one set of quills and grow in a new bigger set. Just picture a baby cutting teeth all over their back and top of their head at once, and this happens about 4 times between birth and weaning (which is around 6 weeks old). During these times, they are rather grumpy, but then again, I can't exactly blame them. ;) They also go through another quilling at around 8-12 weeks old, which is often even worse, because not only are they quilling, they are also going through puberty. Will try to post a couple of more pictures that are relavent. :) Becca Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: dzmeadows on December 11, 2005, 09:12:07 AM I wasn't able to find any of my baby pictures that really displayed well that were online, and my preferred computer (ie, the one with all of my pictures) is temporarily dead. However, I did find an article with LOTS of pictures of babies from moments after birth until after they are weaned. ;)

Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: dzmeadows on December 13, 2005, 01:16:04 PM I recently heard that Maine was reevaluating their pet legalities, so they may be legal soon! You can email Kelly@hamorhollow.com , I believe she is in contact with someone who is working with the F&G department. :)
Becca Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: DSGirl4774 on December 13, 2005, 02:17:03 PM Are hedgies usually kind of aggresive or sweet? Do they just play all the time or cuddle most? I do not know much abot them....as you can tell! He is super cute! How many do you have and how long have you had them?
Title: Re: A sweet baby pic. :) Post by: dzmeadows on December 13, 2005, 08:02:44 PM A well-bred and properly socialized hedgehog can be very sweet. :) One that does not come from a breeder who breeds for temperament and properly socializes their babies (aka, many from pet stores) can be very unpleasant to deal with. Some enjoy sitting quietly on your lap, others prefer to use you as a jungle gym and climb all over you. I have owned hedgehogs for more than 10 years now, and currently have about 60 residents, plus babies and some temporary visitors.
