Title: Litterbug Post by: wonderrodent on August 03, 2008, 08:20:51 PM I was stuck in traffic on the highway the other day (must have been an accident). While we were standing there, the passenger in the car in front of me rolled down his window and through out his fast food trash. Then he looked around and when he looked at me I rolled down my window, pointed at the trash and shouted "you dropped something!" He looked at me going "What?" So repeated it - twice. He didn't get it, well , he didn't want to get it because he knew exactly what I was talking about. So I called the "litterbug" number, told them the licence plate number, location and time. I have no idea what they are going to do about it because how can I prove that? I could accuse anybody of littering. I absolutely HATE it when people litter (cigarettes etc.). Grrrr. Is it so hard to keep the trash in the car and then throw it out at home?
Has anyone else called the litterbug before? Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: Addicted2Rats on August 03, 2008, 08:25:50 PM I never even knew you COULD call a number for that! Wow! Good for you!!!
Deb Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: forkyfork on August 03, 2008, 08:38:23 PM Downtown Cleveland people litter all the time. Businessmen kind of nonchalantly push garbage out of their pockets like gum wrappers while theyre walking.
I pick it up and go up to them like I think theyve dropped something real important. Tell them theyve dropped something and when they put their hand out I give them their garbage back. They dont know what to do besides say thanks so then I say dont litter. I don't know if I would have had the nerve to shove it back into their car, I guess it depends on the car. I sure would have thought about it though. Ive noticed the litter number but theres no way I could remember it when I needed it. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: MsMagpie on August 04, 2008, 08:45:05 PM I just don't get this. What are people thinking? Do they see the world as their trash can? I mean, I literally do not understand the thought process. Someone explain it please.
Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: pinkie1205 on August 04, 2008, 09:40:45 PM I was watching one of those extreme cop shows and I saw this one video that was hilarious. This cop pulled over this guy for speeding. Well the guy got VERY upset about the ticket. The speeder tore up the ticket and threw it all over the ground. The cop told the guy that if he didn't pick it up he was going to fine the guy for littering. The guy got out of car and picked up the trash and when he got back in the cop just said, you missed one... :yelcutelaugh: I died laughing.
I don't understand people that litter either. One time I was at my mom's and my brother had a few friends over. I was sitting on the porch and his friend walked outside and before he got into his car he tossed an empty bottle of booze over this fence and into the cemetery that was across the street. I lost all respect for that guy after that. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: coeurfragile on August 04, 2008, 11:25:21 PM I have never had experience with calling the litterbug number, but I've wanted to about a million times!! I don't know how they'd enforce it, I suppose they'd just give them a warning or a citation and tell them if their license plate is reported for littering again they'd get a ticket.
Is it so hard to keep your Burger King bag until you get home and put it in the trash, or *GASP* at a trash can outside of the grocery store, workplace, gym...oh, you know, just about anywhere, really. I think almost every single business has a trash can outside, or nearby. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: ladytiger7647 on August 05, 2008, 06:58:22 PM Last year someone threw a lighter out their window when I got off the bus and exploded. It scared the rats out of me! My dad use to bring a bag with him when he took the dogs for a walk and would pick up trash and cans. Once home he'd throw out the trash and stash the cans away to cash in later :cheeky:.
Litter really does bother me escially when it occures in a rural area. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: pinkie1205 on August 05, 2008, 09:27:11 PM I guess some of you guys have never been through Baltimore before. When you drive down certain streets (especially in the not so good parts of town) it looks like one night everyone put their trash out on the corner and someone went through and just dumped all the bags on the street. There is SO much trash. We got lost down there (well the GPS took us wherever it wanted to) and we ended up driving through this "park" or "wild life preserve"..anyway there was so much trash i couldn't believe it. It looked like everyone was dumping their trash there because they didn't want to pay for waste removal. It was horrible and I was really shocked...
Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: KoalaLou2 on August 06, 2008, 01:25:37 PM I grew up in the country and people dumped trash on the road all the time! It was so aggrevating especially when it was on our land! And a lot of it was beer bottles/cans or the empty beer boxes. Stupid drunk driving college kids.
We've had everything from garbage bags full of trash to clothes dryers dumped on and around our land because people didn't want to pay to dump it or something. Don't most cities offer free curbside pickup for regular trash? I know where I used to live in MA did. Now we live right outside city limits so we have to pay (supposedly, we haven't seen a bill since we moved in over a year ago, the woman said she paid through the end of the year but we still haven't gotten anything!). Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: OldsGal on August 06, 2008, 01:39:13 PM I was standing outside of a comedy club one night with some friends when here comes these three "I'm too pretty for you" girls running up to the door as if they were running late or something. One was puffing on a fresh cigarette. She drops it by the door and snuffs it out with her platform heals.
I yelled at her as she was going into the door "Just throw that anywhere please!" I didn't think she heard me but evidentally she did because within a few seconds she appeard back through the door and with this entitled attitude she says "Excuse me?" I pointed at her butt on the ground and said "That is absolutely disgusting." She says, "Do you see a place any where around for me to place that" OMG you have to be kidding me you stupid beeotch. We have a no smoking ban in force so there is no smoking in any public place. All public places now have ash containers outside their doors. So I point to the one that is just on the other side of the entrance not more than two steps from where she threw her butt down and said, "Yes as a matter of fact right over there" Her face turned pale and she picked it up and deposited it in the receptacle and promptly went inside. Here is the link. I guess the number is different depending on the state you live in. I have it saved in my cell phone. http://www.litterbug.org/illegaldumping.htm I couldn't find anything that would tell you what they do with the violators. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: jesirose on August 06, 2008, 02:23:03 PM We do have to pay for garbage AND recycling pick up - and get this - Extra trash bins are free, but we have to PAY for extra recycling. ::)
Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: Scubbs on August 07, 2008, 10:46:25 AM I HATE litterbugs, so much. One time I was driving down the freeway, and someone in front of me was literally just emptying out the trash in their car out the window. Fast food wrappers, cigarette butts, some papers, even a couple empty popcans. I didn't think to do anything at the time (like remember the license #) since I was just so amazed by what he was doing.
Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: myscratchcat on August 07, 2008, 01:17:28 PM There are always those idiots who throw the beer cans in the back of the truck... then when they are driving down the highway, they fly out at me!

Staci Oh ciggarette butt throwers are the worst. Not only do they stink up the air (and aggravate my allergies to no end) they also feel some kind of entitlement to throw their trash whever. Smokers are by far the worst offenders I'd say. Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: star2 on August 08, 2008, 02:12:09 PM My mom and I were at an intersection outside of my neighborhood today. We were going straight, but were stopped at a red light. A guy in a car across the intersection was turning right (do you have the image in your head? :P)
Anyways, I watched him roll down his window and throw a wrapper out onto the street! I was like "Mom did you see that?? He threw a wrapper out the window!!" and I honked the horn (slash laid on the horn) and he looked at us and quickly drove away ::) So then I went on a rant about how it's NOT HARD to wait until you get home to throw the frickin wrapper away... I think the best part about this episode was the way the cop was all "... bye." when the guy drove off. Smokers are by far the worst offenders I'd say. Not to mention the stupidity of tossing a burning object out of a car where it could hit somebody or start a fire. Or get picked up by an animal or a child. Although what I love are the half-smoked cigarettes you see sitting on the window ledge by an entrance to wherever -- like the person is going to retrieve it later. How gross is that???? I'm the b**** that tosses them all in the trash. :BlueDumboSmileTongue: Nobody would call me a litterbug -- all my trash is obviously still in my car!!!! Title: Re: Litterbug Post by: Dela on August 10, 2008, 12:31:31 AM Just wanted to say that not all us smokers are litterbugs... I carry smokeless ashtrays in my car, and in any car I ride/drive in. Tossing a burning cigarette out the window is asking for trouble..you never know if the car behind you has a gas or fuel line leak... Not to mention, if there's no where to toss the butt, put it in your pocket! My partner gets so mad at me when she finds dead butts in my pockets.. but at least they are not littering the streets!

I agree. I'd also like to say that there are worse things being pumped into the air then just cigarette smoke. I get so annoyed when I see a big huge truck with dual exhausts pumping out so much black smoke that you can't even see through it. |
