Has anyone read 'Shelters of Stone'? I won't tell you why I'm asking until after so I don't give anything away

I'm always looking for a new book to read. As soon as I'm done with the ones I've got now, I'll have to pick that one up.

I've got it but I haven't read it yet. I'm going to go back to the beginning and read all of the others, since it's been so long between installments. Right now, I'm in the middle of Valley of the Horses.

I've got it and I'm almost done with it. Much better then the previous two...less sex and more anthropology.

I read the entire series when I was in 5th grade, so of course I've forgotten the entire plot by now, so if I were to read the new book, I'd have to go on a reading spree and reread all the other books before it

yep....thats about how I felt about it too. much better. I did still skip the sex parts.
as for re-reading the other books, I managed to re-read Plains of Passage before reading Shelters of Stone, but couldn't make myself wait to re-read all of them. I might re-read them now that I have a little more time

ok, I have to ask, since I have sixth grader who I think would enjoy the books. Did the sex parts bother you, did you just ignore them etc etc?? Me, I tend to skip those parts.

I bought it the day it came out and promptly devoured it cover to cover (in two days.) I'll do the same with the next (and last
) one, but I hope we don't have to wait 12 years for this one.
I was dissapointed with the level of commercialism personally--the sex was blatantly a marketing ploy rather than having any real contribution to plot advancement. There was pretty close the same amount as there were in the previous few novels. I'm sure it provides tittilation (hmm...I wonder what the censor will do with THAT word) for the younger readers, but I find it annoying. If I want soft porn, I'll go buy soft porn.
I love her books expressly for the paleoanthropology and still read them for that purpose, but I wish she would return to her original format wherein material was pertinent to her story, rather than extraneous fluff.
I wonder if she would be receptive to hearing such comments...
Yes, I did enjoy the book, btw--I just breezed past the sex scenes, since they weren't of any real interest to me.

fropvd (and everyone else), I totally agree about the sex scenes. One things that did annoy(?) me was the repetitiveness of the information especially about plants and animals.
I believe she wrote the last book at the same time as this one so hopefully the wait won't be as long!

Since the books weren't chock full of them I didn't have any problem with it. I was mature enough not to go "eww they're nakie", and I don't think a 6th grader would have a problem accepting love and sex the way they are.
