RIP Topaz, I Miss You!!

« on: October 10, 2007, 10:11:11 AM »

I've never had any other small pets other than rats.  Basically, I know next to nothing about hamsters, and probably will never get one considering I have "too many" rats as it is.  But I'd really like to see how people house their hamsters. I think they're so cute and I was wondering what kind of life style the "average" hamster has.

I don't have my cage loaded right now =/ but my Hamster lives in The Rat Cubbyhole cage from www.martinscages.com- with the powder coating and the flip top lid. I don't recommend the non-coated cages in the actual hamster section of the site because it rusts, smells, and hurts their feet.

I cover the wire bottom on the level by adding those small animal cuddle cups and a grass mat. the size allows for a wheel, hidey house, some floor toys, hanging toys, and a hamster hanging cube [all of which are in my hammie's cage]. Then I let her out daily for handling time with me and run around time in her ball, and in her playpen where I scatter some of her hammie tubes and toys.

Also the Rat Tower [also powder coated and add the flip top lid] is wonderful for big hamsters and gives a lot of room for toys, hiding areas, wheels, etc.

Martins isnt the only cage company that I like though. I also love ferplast cages, also homemade bin cages are great.. and inexpensive. =) And you can make them as big and roomy as you'd like and add as many houses/wheels/toys as youd like.

Okay....I will show you some of the different setups. Hamsters need lots of space unlike mice and gerbils who can live in smaller-ish tanks and cages.

Four of my syrian hamsters each have two habitrails of their own. These cages are too small on their own and two is needed. Unelss you are looking at smaller ones like the Habitrail OVO or the Critter Trail Mini's then you need 3-4 cages. They are expensive and some of them break easily (Critter Trail). My habitrails have held up well. Youc an have fun with the tubes but beware some syrians cannot fit very well in the tubes.

Some of my hamsters used to live in bin cages but Romeo passed away and Spunky was moved into my spare tank. I spent 20 dollars on each and added mesh to the lids later on. They are both bigger then a 20 gallon long tank.

Tanks. Currently my dwarf, Trixie has a 30 gallon that she used to share with her sister. *RIP Krista* And Spunky, a syrian, lives in a 20 gallon long.

I don't have any wire cages so no pictures. I am happy with all fo the cages for different reasons. But for a cheap decent cage the bin cage is best, tanks look nice, and the habitrails are fun to setup. :p

thanks!  That's good to know that they need so much room.  I get people asking me questions about hamsters all the time and it makes me feel bad that I have to shrug my shoulders because I really did not know if those habitrail things were suitable or not.  Most of the websites I had looked at said they were, but that just didn't seem right.  Huh  I don't even plan to get any hamsters (at least not in the near future,) but it's good to know these things.

I personally do NOT recomend habit trails for syrian hamsters...or dwarfs unless more then one. My Syrian got stuck in a vertical tube, we had to save him! I keep my Syrian in a 20 gallon aquarium and let him out for free roam for about 30 mins everyday. It's all a matter of personal preference and experiences, I have had horrible experiences with the habit trail for my dwarf, my syrian wasn't in it even a day. I do think the bin/plastic tub is a good idea for a cage, I might end up switching to a bin bigger then this cage I have.

I'll post some pics of my ham's cage as soon as I can. Smiley

I have only ever had one hamster have a problem with habitrails and he is a BIG syrian. But habitrail and SAM tubes are much larger then critter trail tubes because critter trail tubes are bubbled. I also find the cages themselves easyier to clean then tanks and bins. The habitrail tubes can come in half so they are easy to clean. Wink

i keep one roborovski in this one.

temporary cage for another roborovski (they began fighting). and yes, it does have a well-ventilated lid.

i keep one elderly syrian in this one. small cage, i realize this - i received the hamster and cage from a friend who didn't want her anymore. she's outside of her cage for long periods of time because she no longer wants to use the wheel.

paulina - What kind of cage is that in the first picture?  It looks cool.  And what size bin cage is that? I just made a few awaiting my foster gerbils.

This cage? It's a Savic.

And the bin, I'm not entirely sure of. Sad Damn me and my wanting to peel the sticker off the bin on garbage day, but it's a little bit bigger than the Savic (the website should have dimensions on there), though the lid is kind of low.

Paulina most syrians don't fit in silent spinner wheels they need atleast 8" wheels although females can usually go for 7.5" and be ok.Perhaps this is why she has stopped using her wheel along with old age. Wink

Along with the huge tumor she had on her paw. Wink

She died this past Thursday and is finally okay. I did have her checked out by an small animals vet and the vet said because of the location, size, and her age, the chance she wouldn't survive the procedure was very high. So we let her live out her last few weeks at home.

She was a female and pretty small for being a Syrian - the wheel fit her. But even she had her old, big wheel, she was never much of a runner. So, I provided obstacle courses on my bed.
