I was lurking on that forum (linked above) for a long time tonight and it looks like quite a few people are breeding for mroe color variety as well, but none seem interested in breeding for sweet pets.  A few people mentioned they tried handling the babies from day 1, but it did no good once they opened their eyes.

I was browsing that forum and most of them seem to regard them as "those nasty little brutes" and "vicious finger biters." Unfortunately, I can't condone the way some of them treat their animals. I hope they treat their snakes better than they do their little breeders.

Unfortunately, I went up to give everyone their treats for the evening and found one of the girls dead under the wheel. She hadn't been gone for very long and there was no physical evidence of a fight or a sickness or anything. Healthy weight, good coat. She ran up and took food this morning; her sister is acting completely normal. It makes me wonder if she choked or if it's similar to what her brother died of (he also died without a mark about a month ago). What a bummer  Sad I guess I'll be getting a male and female from the other feeder breeder. I'm going to send a polite email asking if they have an "oddball" colors or markings crop up in their litters besides the "albinos."

From what I've seen, most feeder breeders treat their animals that way.  There is a picture on the forum of a lady from Japan who has 3 males that she's able to hold and even play with, and I found a few other threads of people keeping them as pets.

Sorry to hear about the little girl and boy  Cry  I wonder what happened with them, if maybe it was a genetic defect or something.

I suspect it is something genetic. Perhaps that's why the original breeder liquidated his colony? They can't be producing enough litters to compensate the cost of raising them up if they drop dead at 3 months of age. Good thing I'm not breeding them for anything.

As for the feeder breeders, I think it's sad when they get this "special" animal, keep it and breed it, and then just dispose of it without batting an eyelash. It's one thing to have a bin full of white mice you never pay any attention to, but I don't see how you can get "attached" and know it's an individual, then feed it off.

Yep, I don't understand it either.  The only live feedings I do are crickets and meal worms, and even with those I feel like a hypocrite with my pet rats  Embarrassed

I adore snakes and other carnivorous animals, but I just could never bring myself to feed baby animals to a larger animal while it's still alive and scared out of its wits.  Huh

This is why I don't have pet snakes. hehe.

I'm hoping to go to the Grayslake reptile show next month to get my ASFRs.  I told my mom to bring a blind fold and cover my eyes so as not to see all the other animals (feeders and reptiles,) 'cause I don't need more.  Yellow Cute Laugh

Hey....just thought about tellin you this, there's a new pet store out in KCK off 71st and Leavenworth Road that sells ASF Rats....its called House of Scales or something like that...I know that it has the name Scales in it....went there the other day to check it out.....it's VERY small, but didn't look toooooooo bad for a small store. They have some cute pot bellied pigs too...lol....and a mammoth tort that is 15 years old....HUGE!! But they specialize in reptiles, so that might be your thing....also there is a place down in Bonner Springs called Frick and Frack Feeder Shack... horrrible name....small place....very nice owners.....he's going to be breeding some dumbo's here pretty soon, so I have to keep in touch with him....yeah, he does do feeders, but I think the dumbo's are for pets only. He said he supplies to a lot of store in the area...said he was trying to get PM...I laughed and told him he might as well give up on that...sorry I'm rambling........oh, but MiMi gave me kisses today...shes still not doing too hot. My mom is doing a lot of rattie sitting while I'm at work......she's a good grandma for someone who doesn't even like rats....lol.....I'll try to keep you updated.....

MiMi is my Guardian Rat, thanks for all the help. I'll probably go down and check out House of Scales. I've been meaning to anyway, just haven't gotten around to it. I mapquested and it doesn't even look as far as Parkville. There's also supposed to be a petstore in Parkville to, which I intend to visit as well. By any chance did you see the ASFs? I'd still like to get ones that look different from the ones I have (to save my fingers). Sorry to hear that Mimi still isn't doing well. But she's still hanging on and that's a good sign.

Topaz: If I liked snakes, I would have them, just feed frozen. I have no problems with feeding frozen. My lizard occasionally takes frozen pinkies. Good luck with getting those ASFs. I'm glad their reputation isn't deterring you; mine really aren't that aggressive. I can handle both of them and have never been bitten.

Hey eve,
  Just wondering how your ASFRs are doing.  I might actually be getting some soon.  A friend of mine and I are even discussing and researching ideas on possible breeding for pets in the future.  We'll see.  It's doubtful, but there's lots of research still needed.

I still have the one brother and the one sister. They are so big now! I never did get any more because I read that intros could be tricky between males. My female is actually housed with a male mouse (she put herself in his cage; I didn't do it) and seems quite content with the company. They're still very friendly, if timid, and neither one has ever bitten me.

According to this: http://goto.glocalnet.net/natal/ they say that natal rats are easier to intro than domestic rats.

I'm actually more worried about them coming from feeder bins (breeding/rodent dieases/pregnant/conditions they come from) and age/size differences. They grow very, very slowly and my kids are not quite full size yet. But babies would have to be by themselves for a good two or three months before they wouldn't escape or be picked on. Plus, I don't want a pregnant female. At all.

However, if I see them available, I'll certainly end up bring them home.

Edit: read the page wrong.

Coincidentally, I just saw my first of these rats at a pet shop last week in Bolingbrook, IL.   Since they don't know how to sex and separate guinea pigs, I'm sure these rats are all inter-mingled as well.

They're actually multimammate MICE not rats at all. They're still quite illegal for most pet stores to sell.

I have read that they're no longer called Multimammate, and there's lots of confusion of where they really belong.

I finally got my three girls.  Two are quite scared of me, while one seems to love getting scritches.

Congrats Topaz! Looks like you finally got your babies. What colors did you end up with?

And they're not very rat like. I would liken them more to mice than rats. And yes, they're illegal because of that african rodent law thing (something to do with monkeypox?). I don't remember why.

I got one cinnie pied, one agouti pied and one agouti spotted.  They came from a pet store in NC, and were transported up to me by another forum member.  They're about 2 months old now (I think,) and in a 20 gallon long tank.  I'm working on taming them down.  So far all I can do is pet them in the tank, and they will sometimes take food from my hand (they eat millet spray while I hold it when they're feeling brave.)  I'm already wanting more.

I don't think that Natal rats are illgeal (though maybe it depends on each state.)  There are many breeders in the area who breed them for food only, so surely they're not illegal around here.

Oh my, they're so cute  Obviously they haven't viciously attacked you yet! Mine love millet (although I give organic millet from the bulk section, not the sticks).

I know importing them is illegal, and I'd bet that transporting them over state lines is also probably illegal. Just because people are breeding and selling them doesn't mean it's legal  Yellow Cute Laugh I was just looking at the noxious weed list because I want to buy some aquarium plants and people still sell them, even though they're restricted by federal law.

Okay, so I looked up the banned animals due to Monkeypox, and here's what I found:

On June 11, 2003,
the Director of CDC and the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, under 42
CFR 70.2 and 21 CFR 1240.30 respectively, issued a joint order (Ref.
12) prohibiting, until further notice, the transportation or offering
for transportation in interstate commerce, or the sale, offering for
sale, or offering for any other type of commercial or public
distribution, including release into the environment, of:
    [sbull] Prairie dogs (Cynomys sp.);
    [sbull] Tree squirrels (Heliosciurus sp.);
    [sbull] Rope squirrels (Funisciurus sp.);
    [sbull] Dormice (Graphiurus sp.);
    [sbull] Gambian giant pouched rats (Cricetomys sp.);
    [sbull] Brush-tailed porcupines (Atherurus sp.), and
    [sbull] Striped mice (Hybomys sp.).
    The June 11, 2003, order did not apply to the transport of these
animals to veterinarians or animal control officials or other entities
under guidance or instructions issued by Federal, State, or local
government authorities. In addition, under 42 CFR 71.32(b), CDC
implemented an immediate embargo on the importation of all rodents from
Africa (order Rodentia).

http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2003/03-27557.htm

These guys were bred in the US from imported Natal rats from a long time ago, so unless I'm reading it wrong, they look legal to me.

I have not been bitten at all as of yet.  The person who brought them up to me was bitten, though, when he tried to pick one up.

Well, I finally got to hold Afrika without a problem. She sat nicely (though scared,) in my hand and let me pet her 'til she darted off back into the tank.  The other two didn't sit in my hand but half a second before running into their wheel.

eve, do you use a wheel for your ASFRs?  I have one of the mesh wheels, but I'd like to get 2 silent spinners for them. I heard they'll chew up the comfort wheels.

I have silent spinners and I'm going back to mesh. They are awful about pooping in their wheel. I'm spoilt by my mice and rats I guess, because they jump off to use the restroom. With the amount of running the ASFs do combined with the amount of pooping they do, you'll be cleaning the wheels about every other day just to keep the cage from smelling.

I've never had any problem with chewing in either of my cages. And they have plastic houses and wood houses and live in plastic bins. Now I just jixned myself  Yellow Cute Laugh
