A fellow in my city recently started a guinea pig rescue and I've offered to include him in my next Harlan Tekland order for food.  Is this a good idea?  I know that Harlan's rat food is pretty much the best there is.  Can I assume that's true for their piggy food as well?

I would do research on the exact need a piggie needs, then look at the ingredients of the HT pig food.  Smiley

Harlan rat blocks are the best only because the other things that are out there, are pretty terrible.

Harlan's guinea pig food is sub-par at best, unfortunately.  Your friend should look into ordering Oxbow or American Pet Diner pllets.

Whilst there are literally dozens of different foods for guinea pigs out there, you want to try and avoid anything that has seeds, grains, dried fruit, dried vegetables or coloured bits.  What you want is a plain grass hay pellet.  Lucerne pellets for pregnant cavies, and for cavies under 6 months of age.  And Timothy pellets for older cavies.  There are 3 that are most commonly recommended and these are Oxbow, Kleenmammas, and Mazuri 5664.
